Number roads
Children with an interest in cars and transport will find this activity lots of fun. It is an easy and appealing way to introduce them to the symbols that represent quantities, in other words, numbers. It is similar to the sandpaper numbers. If you wished to add texture you could use these numbers as templates and create felt numbers. To make 10 simple print an extra one and place with zero in a laminating pouch. Main learning objectives ●
Recognise some numerals
●
To build a mental image of the number through movement
Before introducing this activity your child needs to be able to : ●
Move their finger or a small car along a line
●
Demonstrate an interest in numbers
Method ●

●
●
Print and laminate the number roads. Present in a tray which comfortably fits them along with one or two small cars Demonstrate to your child how to follow the arrows along the numbers, always starting at the dot. Demonstrate saying the name of the number before and after you finish tracing it. Remember to always remove the completed number before placing another one in front of your child. It is vital to isolate the numerals. Always ensure that the child wishes to continue. When they have finished encourage them to put the activity away and let them know that they can do it whenever they would like.
