“A man who believed in his colleagues, who believed in the GPCA team, who was available to us 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.”
“He always listened, he always challenged us, he always provided the challenges to us and he always raised the bar.” His Excellency Mr Mohamed Al-Mady, Abu Turki, is a visionary who truly was able to transform the vision of the petrochemical industry in the Arabian Gulf Region, into a reality. From a person who has been working for him and with him, for 33 years, I have seen him transform dreams into reality. The experience and knowledge he learnt, from a team that he built and worked with at SABIC, converting a company from a local petrochemical company into a giant international petrochemical company, he brought to GPCA. In 2006 when we first started our dream path, I realized that with his support, we could make the dream of the petrochemical industry in the Arabian Gulf Region come true. By all measures, GPCA has improved immensely on your watch and, through your authentic leadership we have achieved so much. 10 years later I can confidently say that through you, our dream has become a reality. He is a man who believed in his colleagues, who believed in the GPCA team, who was available to us 24 hours a day , 7 days a week. We could speak to him and the secretariat on any subject we wished. You always listened, you always challenged us, you always provided the challenges to us and you always raised the bar. From a humble start in the first year, where we gathered around 800 professionals to attend the first GPCA annual conference - today we are seeing over 2200 professionals and leaders of the petrochemical and chemical industries from around the world gathered in this beautiful city to exchange knowledge, share views and see the prospects of our industry in the coming years. Without his support without his dedication, without his vision without his comment, today’s event would not have been what it has been today. That is what Abu Turki is all about.

“We have learnt to have vision and dreams, and how to transfer those dreams into reality.”
“Throughout the journey in our Responsible Care initiative, he was there to follow, to guide and to listen.” His Excellency Mr Mohamed Al-Mady, who I am honoured to have known for the past 33 years, is a man who realized and recognized that the petrochemical and chemical industry in the Arabian Gulf Region would not have a sustainable future if we do not look after the safety health and environment issues relating to our industry and hence, his full support to the Responsible Care that we created some 10 years ago. With the mission of sharing knowledge, with the mission of making our business an international business, with the highest standard of operating procedures, he is a man who challenged us, a man who give us a mission that seemed to be impossible. But I can confidently say that the petrochemical and chemical industry in the Arabian Gulf Region, through GPCA taking on his challenge, taking on his vision, taking on his support, has given us and transformed our vision into reality. Throughout the journey in our Responsible Care initiative, he was there to follow, to guide and to listen. Today all the petrochemical and chemical industries in the Arabian Gulf Region are respected; are operating at the highest standard. But the journey is not over. Bu-Turki is the man who trusted us and supported us to make the journey and the petrochemical industry a sustainable industry, that we and the future generations can benefit from. A man that made the impossible possible in the Arabian Gulf.

“Today, and after 10 years of his leadership, we should be proud of the significant results we have achieved through working together for the betterment of the generations to come in this region.”
“We were honoured to work with him.” As the Chairman of Gulf Petrochemical and Chemical Association, GPCA, he managed the meetings and the affairs of the board, in the most professional and respectable manner we could ever imagine. I myself, coming from a modest petrochemical industry size, but having a seat in GPCA board, had the same opportunity as my colleagues, some of whom were producing 50 to 60 million tons of petrochemicals in the Arabian Gulf Region. He treated us all equal; he listened, he showed firmness and was always available for new ideas. A man I believe who did not require the definition of limitation in his dictionary. He believed everything was possible - if there was commitment, if there was a vision, if there was planning, if there was resource availability to make that vision come true. We were honoured to work with him. It was a pleasure to work with him because we could see the fruit of our efforts and the fruits of GPCA are many. Everyone who has been on our journey or through our journey in the past ten years, has seen how we have shared knowledge and worked as a team under his leadership, to make our industry a safer industry, a more environmentally friendly industry, a better industry. But most of all, his commitment to building the ability of local nationals within the GCC countries has been critical. He has given us the opportunity and realized that the sustainability of the industry, human resources and talent management are as important as the raw material that God has blessed us with in this region. Today, and after 10 years of his leadership, we should be proud of the significant results we have achieved through working together for the betterment of the generations to come in this region.

“He is a leader that made dreams come true.” “He brought that wealth of experience and the support of his organization and people to GPCA.” His Excellency Mr Mohamed Al-Mady, the ex-Chairman of GPCA came with the wealth of knowledge and experience - coming from a background of creating the largest petrochemical and chemical industry in the Arabian Gulf Region, and world’s largest petrochemical and chemical producer with today, over 40,000 employees and a superb professional team of Executives. He brought that wealth of experience and the support of his organization and people to GPCA. He also shared with us his knowledge, his experiences, the challenges that they faced and ensured that such challenges, and the learning process, were made available to the rest of the Board Members and the rest of the members of the GPCA group. We benefited from his leadership, his experience and the visionary direction he had. He was always many years ahead of us. He could see where he was leading GPCA. For some of us, the younger generation, it was a dream, but we realized that with commitment, professionalism, fairness and transparency and belief in our ability, dreams can come true. He is a leader that made dreams come true. He is also a leader that believed in people, who believed that people could achieve anything if you guide, if you provide them with resources, if you challenge them and, if you make the challenge to be really difficult. Today’s Opening Ceremony is a testament to such challenge. Nowhere in the world will you find 2,200 Senior Executives from one industry sector, gathered under one roof. A lot of this achievement comes as a result of teamwork under his leadership. We thank him for such great leadership over the last ten years.

“He never looked at the size of your production facility; he always looked at the results you were achieving.” I must say as a founding member of GPCA, our vision in 2006 was a humble beginning. However with His Excellency, Mr Mohammed Al-Mady’s vision as Chairman of GPCA, he transformed our local vision into an international vision. A vision that utilized innovation, creativity, professionalism and ethics which were the most important values for Bu-Turki , and his belief in sustaining the talent and local human resources of the region. We started with a humble start, but we never looked back. With his leadership, we realized that all the dreams we were dreaming about, prior to 2006, could come and would become a reality. Today’s event is a testimony to how a vision can be transformed into reality - If you have fair leadership, and he was a fair leader as a chairman of GPCA. He listened, motivated, challenged, and believed in the colleagues he was working with. He always treated us as equals and guided us where we needed, shared knowledge with us - a wealth of knowledge coming from one of the largest organizations in the field of petrochemical and chemical industries in the world. He never looked at the size of your production facility; he always looked at the results you were achieving. Responsible Care, innovation, international trade - all these areas of our business activities at GPCA owe a lot to his vision in making GPCA not a GCC organization but an international organization that can be used as a platform to attract technology, share knowledge and network with our colleagues from around the world. 2200 professionals most of them at CEO level, VP level leaders of this industry from around the world gather here today.
26
His networking and ability to communicate with his colleagues from around the world, was a trait that GPCA benefited from over the past 10 years. Today we owe a lot to His Excellency, Bu-Turk, and all I can say, from a man who has worked with you for 33 years, thank you Sir for making the petrochemical industry in the Arabian Gulf Region one of the best in the world. Your vision and dreams have come true.

“If we want to have sustainable development in this part of the world, it requires us to bring the youth together; the leaders of the future and to let them network with us so that they learn and build on our platforms of success.” Your Excellency, Engineer Mohamed Al-Mady, on behalf of the future generations of the Arabian Gulf Region, I would like to pass on a message: They thank you for giving them the opportunity to align themselves and network with the world’s most experienced people in the petrochemical and chemical industry It was your vision to engage the university students in our events. Today we are extremely proud that all GPCA members sponsor university students to attend our events - to learn from the wealth of experience that we have built in this part of the world. All of this has been achieved because of the unique vision you had a few years ago, that If we want to have sustainable development in this part of the world, it requires us to bring the youth together; the leaders of the future and to let them network with us so that they learn and build on our platforms of success.
