Horticultural Interpretation & Research Centre U2 Fall 2006 Six weeks group project with: Christine Djerrahian Baharan Khosravi

The driving idea behind the design of our Horticulture Research Center is the creation of a centralized open courtyard, a public space that is the locus of all the activity in the building. It is an area framed by different part of the building, in reverse it is an area designed to exhibit its buildings to the greatest advantage. The overriding quality of this type is a sense of enclosure. Layout focuses upon grouping public spaces together on the first floor and private or semi-private spaces together on the second floor.

The geometry of the building is primarily based on a 1:1 grid of squares that was defined by the shape and size of the interior square courtyard. The structure of the building also goes according to the geometry of the squares of the grid. Furthermore, the northern outer wall of our building is angled to follow the direction of Notre-Dame Street, whereas the southern wall follows the linearity of Greene Avenue. The angle of the penetrating wall was designed to mirror the angle of the northern outer wall, hence promoting the penetration of the visitors into the building.
