There is no comparison to travel. Lessons learned inside a classroom cannot even compare to the spontaneous, awe-inspiring adventures that happen when life takes the reigns. That being said, traveling is an entirely di erent experience depending on the phase of life you’re in and the company you keep. Traveling alone is an exploratory journey of self-awareness that gives a whole new perspective on your role in the grand scheme of things. Traveling with a buddy or a romantic partner will create memories you two will treasure for a lifetime. Traveling as a family, while also being a wonderful source of memories and learning, comes with its own challenges. As soon as you make the decision to travel as a family, you need to start planning. This includes proactively nding ways to keep the kids from getting bored during travel, researching places to stay that will provide the most comfort for your buck, planning itineraries that include plenty of breaks and fun, and the acceptance that things will go wrong that are beyond your control. Keeping a healthy perspective on the purpose of the trip is a good way to look at the big picture. When travel alone or with peers, it might be fun to stay in a hostel so you can mingle with other world travelers. As a family, however, it’s wiser to stay in an apartment, preferably one with a kitchen and laundry room. By planning in advance, you can pick a central enough location to be able to come back to rest, while also being near interesting sites.

You will also bene t from having a kitchen on days when your family wants a leisurely breakfast or dinner at home. Shopping in a supermarket is, in itself, one of the most entertaining things to do in a foreign city. Encourage your kids to help with the shopping. It will be a great opportunity to learn about food, language, and culture, and local foodstu s can become the conversation pieces of an entire meal. While it can be very tempting to chock every day full of learning and culture, remember that kids need an occasional rest day to recharge. Keep an open mind about a relaxing liein or day at the beach. The idea is for everyone to remember this family experience in a fond way.
