CIRCULAR QUAY, SYDNEY

Sydney can hardly be considered a ‘green’ city. On a global scale, Sydney has far less green space per resident (18.3m²) than London (27m²), Singapore (66m²), or Vienna (120m²). Green spaces are the lungs of the city; they clean the air, provide opportunities for escapism from the intensity of the CBD and space for exercise, contemplation and conversation. Yet, as Sydney grows increasing tall, will our connection with these vital spaces be lost? How can we lift greenery into the sky, into our high-rise architecture?

7

Masterplan

How can we foster urban greenery in high rise commercial buildings?

Architectural Manifesto

!! !!

The project intends to restore the belief that ‘Circular Quay belongs to the city’ and end its dominance by vehicular mobility.

The project aims to refurbish an integral part of Sydney’s road infrastructure - The Cahill Expressway which has been labelled as Sydney’s eysore for a couple of decades. The Cahill Walkway will connect The Royal Botanical Gardens to the Fleet Park and also provide a green connection to the podium of the commercial building.

CAHILL EXPRESSWAY : A BARRIER

UNFAVORABLE FOR WALKING

CAHILL DIVIDES PUBLIC PARKS

CAHILL DIVIDES PUBLIC SPACES

The Cahill expressway blocks the city from the harbour.

Alfred street is surrounded by transit which creates noise pollution and degrades the ambience for pleasure walks.

Cahill Expressway creates a rift between First Fleet park and the Royal Botanical Gardens.

It acts as a cultural barrier breaching visual connectivity between the Customs House, MCA and the Sydney Opera House.

CONNECT PUBLIC SPACES

Greening the Cahill expressway can breathe new life into a public spaces dominated by vehicular mobility for decades.

The green walkway will restore activities at Alfred street without the transit chaos

The walkway will act as a bridge between the public parks and improve the green network.

The elevated platform will enable visitors to get a complete view of the harbour.

The site falls in the transitionary period between two diverse economic zones - The Star Casino and the Sydney Fish Market and is abondoned by both. The aim of the design is to encourage people from both socio-economic backgrounds to merge on this site and celebrate the Fishing culture of Pyrmont

The boat is a floating piece of space, a place without a place, that exists by itself, that is closed in on itself and at the same time is given over to the infinity of the sea.

Masterplan & Details The hanging pods act as a ‘heterotopia of place’ and provide unique dining and movie screening experiences, making full potential of its unique location under the Anzac Bridge.

- MICHEL FOUCAULT

For access and maintainence the pods rest on a steel skeleton on top of the single storey structure. A grid of 3M X4.5M which can accommodate pods of varying sizes and orientation.

The challenges of global warming ,pollution and population explosion have directly impacted our energy resources. This growing trend would be catostrophic for the future generations to come. In Australia and globally, climate change, transportation and the cost of energy are driving a growing need for the design and construction of high performance buildings.

As 40% of all our energy costs are tied in buildings, it is high time we adopt to new technologies in building design and construction to be energy efficient. It is time that we accomodate multiple functionalities into one building to cater to a wide number of users.

Schematic Section Martin Place lacks a life of its own apart from the ‘9-5’ Business hours. It is a “room” within the city but it fails to attract people during weekends. The aim of the design is to bring people into Martin Place throughout the year. The introduction of an Public Art Gallery at the site, would sync all the activities currently happenning at Martin Place into one reference point.

The Northern frontier promotes the Gallery and draws people in. 16

Metro Station Plan & Views Providing natural light and ventilation is an important aspect of this studio. To illuminate the subconcourse level with natural daylight, a simple phenomenon of reflecting daylight through water tubes has been used. An Amphitheatre in the centre of Martin Place, surrounded by glass water tubes extend the celebration of Art onto the richest corridor of the city. The Amphitheatre has a glass bottom which enables people at the subcourse level to see what activities are taking place on the street level. This also brings in daylight to the subconcourse level.
