Alicante | The Driest Spot on Earth

Page 1

The climate laboratory at Alicante University has just named Alicante province , he driest inhabited zone on earth .The study is based on rainfall and it found that over the last year only 104 l of rain has fallen per square metre . This was 16 fewer litres than was registered in the Sahel , an inhabited region with the lowest rainfall on the planet , it is between the Sahara and the Sudan . Alarm bells are ringing at government levels both national and regional .The province is in the grips of a serious drought .The damage being done to the agricultural sector is in many cases beyond repair . The only hope is for a substantial rainfall during the autumn .However if this doesn´t happen then the future for crops looks extremely bleak .Campello has had less rain than any other in the province . Alcoy has recorded the most rain this year with 86l/m2 and Cocentaina with 91l/m2. So far almost 200,000 almond trees have been lost due to lack of rain .The province has had less than half its usual rainfall .Drinking water is being guaranteed so far but it is water for irrigation which is lacking .
