Up until August 31 this year the Red Cross lifeguards have carried out almost 30,000 interventions in the province .They have provided cover for 36 beaches in six municipalities .26,000 of these interventions had been health related , including jellyfish stings .Then there were cuts , sprains and other minor health issues . Lifeguards had to rescue 350 people who were in situations of risk as well as 98 people in difficulties in boats and dinghies . A total of 153 people were sent to hospital for more treatment . This year the green flags had been flying for 66% of the summer with yellow warning flags up for only 29% and red flags , banning swimming , for 5% of the time . It is so important that people do respect the coloured flags that are flown and thatpeople do not swim if there is no lifeguard on duty . You very often hear of elderly people getting into difficulty and drowning .This often happens because they dive into the sea and the sudden change of temperature can cause heart problems and heart attacks . Systems where children wear named wrist bands has also become popular as often children wander off and get lost .This system helps everyone .
