It was to be expected that the much hyped reduction in unemployment would eventually come to an end .It was good while it lasted but the reality is that the tourist season has come to an end and those short term contracts have finished , so people are bein laid off again and the unemployment figures are going back up . Thousands of people who have had temporary contracts are now signing on the social security again and looking for jobs .In Alicante province the number of people rejoining the dole queues during August rose by well over 3000 and this was beaten only by Valencia where the number was 3,800 for the same period .. The figure for Alicante accounts for 40% of the national increase and leaves the province with over 200,000 people out of work . These figures have given the unions the opportunity to say that the government´s claim of an economic upturn , is just pie in the sky . Of the 3,334 newly unemployed in Alicante province 2,600 come from the industrial sector which includes shoe manufacture and 500 are from the service and tourism sector , 338 are from the construction industry .with agriculture adding another 34 . On the national level unemployment has gone up by 8000 but the Spanish government has stated that the increase has not changed its forecast for a long term improvement in employment .
