Cleaning up cigarette ends from a sandy beach must be a nightmare .Benidorm on the Spanish Costa Blanca does have a reputation for its super clean beaches .In the 1980´s it was classed as one of the top 10 best beaches in the world and ever since the blue flags for excellence have been awarded Benidorm has managed to win one .. The town has also always had a reputation about the control of smoking and has won a World Health Organisation award for its stance .Their campaigns have led to a fall in the number of people who smoke and this has been reflected in a drop in the death rate from smoking related diseases . Currently people are allowed to smoke in open areas except where children are playing such as children´s playgrounds where it is strictly prohibited . On beaches there can be hundreds of children and yet smokers are still free to smoke there as it is deemed an ” open space ” . This means that children are in close proximity to smokers and also the beaches are covered in butt ends of cigarettes .They can take 10 years to degrade and cleaning them up is a nightmare for the beach cleaners each day . In some areas of Spain authorities have set up no smoking zones on beaches and this has led to a significant reduction in cigarette ends and consequently has made cleaning much easier . Now it has been proposed that Benidorm adopts the same policy. All that it would mean is that signs would be put up to inform the public .There is no talk , yet , of fining people who disregard the request .
