A British expat has just completed a 350 mile kayak challenge from Gibraltar to Alicante harbour on the Spanish Costa Blanca .The objective was to raise funds for the Trinity Palliative Care Services and Brian House Children´s Hospice in Blackpool . Dave Spilsbury lives in Pilar de la Horadada .He wanted to raise money for the two charities because they had cared so well for his mother during her last days .He says that he has seen the loving work that they do with adults and especially with children . He started his kayak trip on September 1 and has been rowing for 8 or 9 hours a day along the coast and sleeping on beaches by the side of his kayak at night .He capsized five times and had plenty of waves and wind to battle against . Both of the organisations that he supported provide free specialist care for adults and children who have life threatening or life limiting illnesses .Around a 1000 people are helped every year by Trinity and around 80 families use the services of the hospice each year .This help costs around 7 million pounds every year but only 30% of the expenses are covered , the rest has to be found by people raising money in this way .
