Javea town hall amongst other Costa Blanca authorities have warned that water supply and rivers authorities have failed to clear out dense dried up reeds and rushes which present not only a fire hazard but also a flooding risk . Javea complains that the Jucar Hydrographic Confederation ( CHJ ) is responsible for weeding the Gorgos riverbed but has failed to do so for many years . Last year the council had to use public finds to cut down 500 eucalyptus trees which had appeared in the riverbed between Carratera del Pla and Via Augusta bridges , because the CHJ had failed to do so .Council workmen do not have the equipment to actually pull the reeds out of the river bed , they only cut them back , so the next year they grow even thicker than the previous one .All that Javea has been able to do is clean the brooks and streams .Sadly the council cannot touch the Gorgos river itself. Blocked and overgrown rivers are a serious risk at this time of the year .This is the time when heavy rain falls and if it cannot get to the sea then it can overflow its banks and cause serious flooding . In 2007 this is what happened at Beniarbeig when the bridge collapsed and cut the village into two halves preventing people on either side of the river from escaping .In El Verger that same week two people lost their lives in the floods . It isn´t only Javea that is complaining but areas prone to flooding in Denia too .The CHJ has not cleared the River Girona either .It is just as blocked as the River Gorgos . Surely it is better to carry out these cleaning processes , which must be cheaper than rectifying damage caused by floods and fires .
