When a whale is spotted it is an extremely exciting happening .Recently off the Costa Blanca coast three Fin Whales were spotted by volunteers of an environmental scheme . The volunteers were aboard a Marine Environment and Fisheries Service boat .This scheme is run by Denia town hall and they spotted the whales in the viscinity of Cabo de San Antoni , near Las Rotes . These large mammals are also called Razorbacks because of a distinct ridge along its dorsal fin .They are an endangered species with a global population of around 30,000. These animals are second in size to the famous Blue Whales and have been heavily hunted in the 20th century .It has been estimated that 750,000 were killed in the southern hemisphere between 1904 and 1979 . They grow to over 20 metres and can weigh 70,000 kg .They can live up to 90 years old . The volunteers were able to follow the three whales for about an hour . This volunteer scheme has attracted interest from across Spain and people can apply to participate via the Denia town hall website .As well as whales , dolphins and porpoises are observed , as well as the birdlife .
