The Nit de L ´Alba in Elche on the Spanish Costa Blanca , takes place on the night of August 13 and will see thousands of fireworks being set off . As well as the firework display there is always the fire cracker fight , allocated to a special area and those who want to participate need to start preparing early . Those who take part have to cover their bodies and wear goggles , helmets and gloves .The hair has to be totally covered . Workers setting off the main firework display will also have to take special precautions following an accident in 2012 when the biggest firework was set off 10 mins early and seriosly injured three workers .Twenty others were treated for minor burns . This celebration has its origins in the MIddle Ages when families used to make offereings to the Virgin Mary by way of a rocket launched for each of their respective children . Now hundreds of rockets are launched . The last rocket is the Primera de la Virgen , a large brilliant white firework which forms the shape of a palm .After this the locals sing a traditional ” habanera ” and conclude the celebration by eating watermelon and staging the fire cracker fight .
