Gata | Station Gives Poor Impression of Town

Page 1

The boarded up railway station at Gata de Gorgos on the Spanish Costa Blanca is a place where there have been gang fights and the place is daubed with graffiti .Railway workers are fed up and say that this does not give visitors a very good impression of the town . The train line runs from Denia to Benidorm and a lack of funding has led to the station being neglected as well as giving a lower level of service .People say that the station in Gata is filthy and unhygienic .They also say that it is a hotbed of crime . The windows and doors are now boarded up and many have described it as looking as though it has emerged from the Wild West .It has become the venue for rival local gangs to have a punch up . Staff who try to intervene are usually threatened , the police and the regional rail board don´t seem to want to know .This is what the unions say .They go on to say that the safety of employees does not seem to concern the Gata town council either .The buildings are in disrepair and crumbling . Part of the station was handed over to the town hall in 2009 to turn into a museum but it has never happened .The Valencia regional government and the town hall are responsible but are shirking those responsibilities . The union has warned that if staff suffer an assault when confronting ” yobs ” or if a traveller is injured then the rail board and council will have a heavy price to pay .
