Javea | Anger At Suggestion Of A Lighthouse Hotel

Page 1

Javea is a town on the Spanish Costa Blanca and the town council there is very angry about the suggestion that the Sant Antoni lighthouse should be turned into an hotel .They have now demanded that Madrid halt the plans to do this . The Javea town hall was actually tipped off by media reports that the Port Authority in Alicante had planned this change of use .Javea has accused the organisation of going behind their backs and keeping the town hall in the dark . The Javea mayor has written to central government , the Ministry of Development , requesting that the project be stopped and that any decision relating to the lighthouse be first referred to the local authority .The lighthouse was built in 1855 and is now fully automated . The letter stresses the total lack of respect shown by the Port Authority by taking a unilateral decision without any reference to the town hall in Javea . The lighthouse stands in Montgo National Park and when Javea asked for details of the plan for the lighthouse they were sent an information pack which showed two ideas for hotels and one for an environmental centre .The hotel option indicated a six bedroom hotel with cafe and restaurant .The conversion costs were estimated at 40,000 euros and a concession would be granted for 30 years . The Development minister did announce last year the idea of converting lighthouses into hotels .There are 187 dotted around the coastline as part of a network to help safe navigation .
