The Costa Blanca is suffering a drought and recently the La Nucia council had to arrange an emergency supply of water for its main irrigation channel . There is a critical shortage of water for crops and the town hall had to negotiate with the Marina Baja Water Consortium to enable them to acquire extra water . The consortium´s pipeline has been transporting 15 l of water per second to the principal Sequia Mare or ” mother canal ” whose 25 kilometres of pipeline maintains the local farms . It rises between Polop and La Nucia collecting water from five natural springs which have now virtually dried up . Now much needed water has finally reached the parched orchards .Previously the farmers were looking at losing them all and facing ruin . In the first 7 months of 2014 the area has only received 24l of rain per square metre and now the only hope is that the autumn brings a substantial rainfall to rectify the damage .
