Palm trees are at great risk from the red palm weevil. This is quite an attractive red beetle with a long ” nose ” .You wouldn´t think that these beetles could destroy a 20 foot palm tree but they can do just that . The palm trees lining the Avenida Madrid in Moraira are in the process of being inspected for the weevil .Costa Blanca palms have been under attack for a number of years now and sadly many have had to be destroyed . A company recommended by Alicante University is doing the examination and already they have found palms that are infected .From the outside these trees look normal but inside the larvae of the beetle are wreaking havoc by eating the palm from the inside out . Nine of the palms were so badly affected that it was decided to fell them . There are others that can be saved , they think , and so they will receive treatment which if successful should provide a certain amount of immunity . Initially they will be sprayed .They say that this will be done with authorised insecticides .I would stay away from Moraira when this is being done .The trunks will then be given injections of fungi based products .All palms are now being inspected as it is felt that they are all vulnerable .
