The Playa Levante in Santa Pola on the Spanish Costa Blanca has a new amenity in the form of a floating platform of seats , with a canopy to protect from the sun , for disabled people . The facility is in a cordoned off area to make access easier for people with reduced mobility .There are handrails clamped to the floor from the shore to offer greater support and stability and the platform is just a few metres from the shore . The facility is for residents and tourists and their helpers and it will be open from September 21 when the water is getting colder and the lifeguards and swimming services finish for the season . The Playa Levante was chosen because it is the most central beach and there are more elderly people and people with reduced mobility .The scheme will be extended to Gran Playa if it is a success .There are already areas on both beaches which are reserved for anyone with any type of disability , including being pregnant . Use of the platform is free of charge and are certified according to international standards .This positions Santa Pola as a place with some of the best facilities in Spain .Associations that oversee such facilities say that these beaches rank in the top 8 in Spain for people with reduced mobility .Consequently the town hall has been awarded a grant of almost 5000 euros to buy two hydraulic lifts and transfer benches and they will significantly improve the beaches even more .
