The PP government in Spain has shelved the highly controversial abortion bill which had been put forward by the Justice Minister Alberto Ruiz -Gallardon .The Justice Minister has now resigned . Critics have said that the ultra conservative law would take Spain back 30 years in terms of abortion legislation and it has created emotional demonstrations across Spain on both sides of the argument . It is interesting that the law was put forward by a man and one wonders how many women were asked for their opinions on the proposed bill .This was a pet project of the Justice Minister and although he has an entitlement to his beliefs he also has no right to project them onto the population of Spain . Another man , Mariano Rajoy , the Spanish president approved the draft law in December last year .The draft was strongly opposed by the opposition parties and even amongst the PP itself . The draft totally removed the right to abortion on demand until week 14 of the pregnancy and returned to a system where a termination would only be given in cases of rape , serious foetal abnormalities or when the life of the mother was in danger . Initially the minister wanted to do away with foetal deformaty as a reason for an abortion but he later back tracked .Sr Rajoy announced the shelving of the law last week .However they will reform the current 2010 law under the Family Protection Plan .This will ensure that 16 and 17 year olds must have the consent of their families before they can go ahead with an abortion .These reforms will be announced by the end of the year . The Justice Minister has not only resigned from his post but also from his seat in congress and all PP positions . He is still convinced that what he was suggesting was right for Spain but it seems that Spain has spoken to him and told him that he was wrong .
