The Iberian lynx is one of the most endangered cat species in the world and in 2014 16 of them have already been killed on Spanish roads .This represents 5% of what has been calculated as constituting the total population of this protected animal . In the 1980´s it was recognised that this species had so depleted in numbers that it could become the first species of cat to become extinct in 2000 years .It has been captive breeding programmes that has brought it back from the brink of extinction .However , the cat is failing to adapt to the Spanish motorist . This is the highest number of deaths recorded so far in a year .In previous years the number has averaged at three . It is hoped to introduce the lynx into some areas of Murcia in the coming years if conditions are favourable . The regional government in Andalucia and the central Spanish government have agreed to look at the blackspots where the deaths have taken place .Most of the cats do live in remote parts of Andalucia even though they have been reintroduced into Portugal . The World Wildlife Fund has said that the lynx is most dependent on rabbits for food but it will also eat ducks, young deer and partridges if rabbits populations are not large enough .An adult lynx will eat one rabbit a day while a nursing mother might need three . The average litter of per female is three but the mortality rate to adulthood is high .They generally leave the parents between 8 and 23 months .
