The mayor of Javea on the Spanish Costa Blanca has described the fire which took place in the Montgo National Park a few weeks ago as a ” monumental disaster ” while the mayor of Denia has called it ” a disaster area ” .Both local authorities are seeking cash from the regional government in Valencia , the provincial government and the central government in Madrid .They want help in the reforestation of the area . The fire began on the afternoon of September 11 and 400 fire fighters were involved in trying to extinguish it .It took many days before it was officially declared to be totally extinguished . The fire burned 150 hectares in Denia and 300 hectares in Javea .Meetings are about to be held with environmental departments so that the full impact of the regeneration scheme can be discussed . The Montgo National Park is one of the most visited by tourists and walkers and at the moment it is in a terrible state .We all know that these areas will eventually regenerate but this takes time and both Javea and Denia want to get the park looking good , more quickly .They also want to ensure that this will not happen again . Many of the things requested do not require a lot of money such as better collaboration , better communications and better surveillance . Over the last 2 years the budget for the park has been cut by 40% and they now have to share resources with Pego and Oliva marshes .The mayor has said that the cuts have endangered lives , property and the natural heritage of a place of outstanding beauty .
