Pomegranates are fruits grown in the Elche area of Alicante province and now Elche City Hall has pledged 10,000 euros to promote the local mollar variety in order to support businesses and also to help farmers families .The pomegranate is incredibly important for the local economy with the harvest this year totalling 50 million kilos . Already they have taken this product to important gastronomic events such as Fusion in Madrid and also the Salon de Gourmets . The growing of this fruit in the area generates 3000 jobs and about 1000 indirect forms of employment .Brussels has asked for more information on the mollar pomegranate to add to the application for a designated place of origin ( DO ) for the fruit . The EU Commission wants a study to compare pomegranates of the same variety but produced elsewhere to prove that there are differences between them .This is likely to take several months .Acquiring this distinction is only a matter of time according to the mayor of Elche . The Elche Association of Producers and Wholesalers has also announced that they have opened new markets in the Baltic and in Nordic countries to compensate for the Russian veto on EU products .They are also continuing to target Middle Eastern countries .Already sales have made a good start in these countries .Consumption in Spain has also gone up from 10% of the harvest to 50% , in 7 years .This has all come about as a result of these promotions .
