This is the Spanish holiday season and millions of people take to the roads to get to the coast or the city .It is a well known fact that speed kills and now the DGT National Traffic Department is making � speed � a special focus in an attempt to curb it .They intend to carry out 20,000 checks over a short period of time . Guardia Civil officers will be setting up mobile radar devices in order to trap drivers who are breaking the speed limit .There will also be additional patrols on the roads in an attempt to persuade people to reduce their speed . A DGT spokesperson has said that they are focusing their efforts on A and B roads where more than 70% of fatal road accidents take place . Speeding needs to be made socially unacceptable by the general public in the same way that drink driving , and not wearing a seat belt are now regarded as commonplace .Spped is a factor in 15% of all accidents .It places the lives of not only the driver in danger but other road users and pedestrians .Fines for speeding range from 100 euros to 600 euros plus the loss of two to six points on your license .Jail terms can be given for more serious offences .
