An incorrect application of the law might see thousands of speeding fines being annulled by the DGT Traffic Authority .The National Association of European Drivers ( AEA ) said that the road authorities are using the UNE 26444 regulation to estimate the margin of error of speed cameras , but they noted that this regulation was replaced in December 2006 by a new Ministry for Industry law in 2010 . The Association pointed out that the margin for error of the new regulation is set at between 5 and 7% on the type of speed camera , when previously it had been 3% . The AEA says that the lower margin of error was detrimental to drivers as it led to more expensive fines and having more points withdrawn .Additionally , the association claimed that no margin of error had been used to calculate some of the fines . The AEA president encouraged drivers who have been fined to check with the DGT which rule it had been using for their fine .The speed , the type of camera and the rule applied for the margins of error are specified at the top of the fine document .Some courts have declared these fines to be illegal .
