It has just been revealed that 23.6% of the residents of the Valencia region live below the poverty line and almost 60% of under 25´s are neither employed nor seeking paid work ,while more than half that figure are seeking work but are unable to find a job . This report was carried out by the Cardenal Hernandez University , Caritas Valencia and the FOESSA Foundation .It is based on data from 2013 and the first 6 months of 2014 . The poverty threshold for a home with one person is 8,114 euros plus an additional 50% per adult and 30% per child under the age of 14 . This encompasses more than one million homes in the region and 444,000 in Alicante province where it affects almost 100,000 children .A total of 85,000 homes have no income at all . The Valencia region has the sixth highest percentage of the population at risk of poverty in Spain , 3% above the national average .and 6.5% above the EU average .. The report has said that not only has the risk of poverty increased but the poor are even poorer ..Child poverty has risen from 17% before the crisis to 25% .Almost 14% of under 18´s live in high poverty homes , the highest rate in the EU , after Romania and Bulgaria . Wages per capita have dropped by 11% from their highest level in 2008 and GDP per capita by 21%. They also discovered that the distribution of wealth has become more uneven .The number of people who find it difficult to make it to the end of the month , financially , has doubled from 10% to 20% . They also discovered that though figures show an improvement in employment this is because so many have just given up looking for jobs and so are not counted .There are still decreasing salaries and precarious contracts .The system in Spain is not meeting the needs of the most needy .
