This year´s drought conditions have seen a proliferation of pine shoot beetles in the region and there has been an outcry about the slow response of the regional government to deal with it . Now the Director General for the Environment has announced that they have allocated 200,000 euros to stop it spreading . Four teams will be deployed to focal points of the plague on mountainsides that are managed by the regional authorities .which in Alicante province are the Sierras de Orihuela and Redovan .. Initially they will cut down and strip the bark from affected trees to eliminate active focal points which has to be done before the next generation of adult beetles emerge to lay even more eggs . This will have to be completed in a limited period of time and concentrated on certain days .They will also set up ” bait ” trees , which have been recently cut and will attract the insects away from the living trees .If beetles do bore into the trunks of the bait trees then they have to be removed and replaced every six weeks .. During November , December and January when it is colder then the beetles stop their activities . They will also set traps around the affected areas , around 130 of them and they will use pheremones for the first time to attract and capture these insects .This technique has been used to tral processionary caterpillars in the past .In exceptional circumstances the units will use pesticides from backpack mounted sprays .Orihuela town hall recently announced that hundreds of trees had been affected .It is said that the Sierra is the worst affected area in the whole of Alicante province .
