It was here on our first trip to Michigan that she met the grouse that forever changed her life.

and we both took a few extra moments to catch our collective breath before agreeing to forget the whole incident. By late afternoon the day had turned into a real gem, the autumn air crisp and clear and vibrant. We had bumped two grouse, both of them flushing wild, and I had resisted taking a shot at either lest Betsy get the idea that it was okay to chase birds. But now her demeanor was entirely different, with the cool evening breezes fetching messages of promise as she started getting birdy. One step forward, two steps back, then a quick 180 before she began to get the full picture, and suddenly everything became clear as she threaded her way through the thick scrub, first left toward the river, then out across a small clearing before she nosed into a young fallen pine.

Sporting Classics Magazine Columbia, SC --(AmmoLand.com)- The Au Sable springs from Otsego and Roscommon and then consolidates itself near Grayling before venturing forth on its long ramble home to Lake Huron. Along its tangled edges the dark forest rises deep and verdant in random stands of popple and maple and birch. Rich, young pin oaks fill the myriad patches of overgrown clearcut, along with all the other new growth that together provide habitat for the grouse that brought Betsy and me here for so many years on our annual October odyssey.

Twice she circled the downed pine, nose poking here, nose poking there, her little bobtail a blur until she finally determined that the bird was on the move. And so she started widening her circle and nearly stumbled as she pirouetted back on her own track where it crossed the grouse’s trail, bearing up and away from the river through a narrow crease to the high step above us.

For a little southern-born Brittany, it was at first an odd and capricious place. Yet throughout her life Betsy came to learn and love these great northern forests just as much she did those of her own country far to the south. And it was here on our first trip to Michigan that she met the grouse that forever changed her life. I remember that grouse. At first, I wasn’t quite sure what she had – especially after the incident earlier that morning with the snowshoe hare. In her defense, Betsy was barely out of kindergarten and still trying to figure out this business of being a bird dog. It was all strange country to her, with strange trees and strange smells and especially strange creatures – long-tailed pheasants bigger and more audacious than any grouse or quail she’d ever encountered, big prickly porcupines unlike any groundhog she’d ever seen – and now this, a rabbit twice as saucy as the most insolent cottontail that had ever challenged her to a chase. Betsy the Brittany Yeah, I know . . . bird dogs aren’t supposed to pay attention to rabbits. But the country back home was overrun with rabbits, and she’d struggled with them from the time she was a pup when one had literally jumped up from beneath her nose.

She was now fully committed to the bird, as I was to her, and I knew it was simply a matter of time and persistence until she either caught up with him or bumped him and caused him to flush wild. She was absolutely on tiptoe as she worked her way up through the crease, making notes as she went. I followed as discreetly as possible, giving her plenty of time and room to figure things out as the grouse made his way higher into the thick birch and maple above us.

Now so far from home, she had no way of knowing the difference between a cottontail rabbit and a snowshoe hare. All she knew for certain was that this was one very irreverent creature with the biggest, smelliest feet that had ever assaulted her senses, and before either of us could do anything about it, Brer’ Brittany and Brer’ Hare were off on an impromptu frolic upriver, with me in hot pursuit using words and phrases she’d never heard before.

He was clearly on his home turf, burrowing deep into a dense stand of pin oaks as we topped out along a barely perceptible trail that led deep into the thickest tangle we’d seen so far.

It had only taken her a few seconds to realize the error of her ways, but by then it was too late and she knew it. And when she returned a minute or so later she had a repentant, hang-dog look on her little freckled face,

She was close now; I could tell it in the way she moved and by her quivering little tail and the percussive beat of the crisp evening air sifting through her nostrils. The bird was quickly running out of options – I

knew it, she knew it and he knew it – and suddenly Betsy circled left, broke from the trail and completely vanished.

We shared the same cup, ate the same bread, breathed the same air and drank from the same stream, our faces hard down in the water shoulder to shoulder, soul to soul. When quenched we would arise, and she would whine that we should be on our way and soon we’d again be deep in thought among the trees.

I was stunned and for a moment disoriented and alone . . . where has she gone . . . where is the bird . . . where am I? And then she was there, poised dim and ghostly in the damask trail 20 feet ahead, locked up solid and pointing straight back toward me, tail high, head low, eyes large with her left front paw raised daintily to her quivering chin.

She got the livers and the hearts and left me the rest.

The little gun floated free and weightless at half-rise in front of me, my thumb positioned firmly atop the safety, my finger resting lightly aside the trigger, the air as still and pure and perfect as the moment trembling timelessly around us. For 27 years I have held that moment as closely as Betsy held that bird. She hovered there, a pale apparition in the half-light, the unseen grouse as real a presence as my own pounding heart. I stood transfixed, awaiting the memory to come, until Time itself could no longer bear the strain and the bird rose from the forest floor between us in a thunderous rumble of leaves and dust, chestnut-flecked and dark-ruffed, tail ivoryrimmed and fanned wide, wings drumming, climbing, pleading for that singular cerulean patch of clear evening sky. The little gun buried itself deep into my shoulder as the bird came clear, and backlit feathers filled the air as he tumbled into a remembrance as fresh on this cold winter night in Tennessee as it was on that warm autumn evening in Michigan.

We hunted the great Huron forest every year of her life for as long as Betsy was able, but I never returned there after she died. She was the best friend I ever had. Her spirit was forthright and her affection unconditional, her greatest measure of devotion always free and sincere and for me alone. For it was I who carried her afield to hunt, I to whom she looked for love and play and a more-than-occasional egg or slice of toast to garnish her daily ration, by whose side she waited expectantly as I cleaned our birds and to whose lap she entrusted her weary head at day’s end.

Our life together was one of mutual admiration and dependence. I bore the gun, and she brought her nose and instincts. She swept the hollows and ridges and thickets, and I carried her water and her biscuits and her bowl. Over the years I became more and more tolerant of her infrequent indiscretions and she of my increasingly recurrent pauses for rest.

We never asked perfection of one another, only understanding, each knowing the proper time to defer to the other’s gifts – I when to stop and give her time to do her work, and she when to cast a glance over her shoulder to check my proximity. And together we shared the fruits – the solitude and companionship, the occasions that brought us together to a far sweeter existence than either of us had alone.

USPSA Production Match Immediately following the Limited-10 event, the USPSA Production match featured several of Team Smith & Wesson’s top shooters including Phil Strader, B.J. Norris, Kay Miculek and Team Captain Julie Golob. During the three-day match, Phil Strader switched from his SW1911 to a M&P9 pistol, as he took 3rd Overall in the Production Division after posting the top score of the match on stage 14. Phil was not alone in his medal winning performance as Team Captain Julie Golob placed an impressive 2nd Woman in the Production Division shooting her M&P9 Pro Series pistol. Golob, who had just returned from World Action Pistol Championships in Australia, posted a total of eight stage wins during the match, more than any other woman in the division. Team Smith & Wesson also posted two other Top 5 finishes by B.J. Norris and Kay Miculek. Norris, who placed 8th Overall in 2009, was able to improve upon last year’s finish, concluding the match in 4th Overall using an M&P9 Pro Series pistol. In the Women’s Division, Kay Miculek earned 4th Woman after three stage wins.

USPSA Limited-10 Nationals While Team Smith & Wesson kept a high pace in the Production and Limited-10 matches, it was once again the Revolver Division where Team S&W members exerted their dominance. Leading the charge for the team was Smith & Wesson Champion Jerry Miculek and defending Ladies Revolver National Champion Annette Aysen. Despite an upper respiratory infection and jetlag caused by returning from the World Action Pistol Championships in Australia, Miculek rose to the top earning a total of six stage wins en route to reclaiming the USPSA Revolver National Title. Using his Smith & Wesson 625 JM revolver, Miculek faced off against several top wheelgunners including his own teammates Elliot Aysen, John Bagakis, David Olhasso and Josh Lentz.

Smith & Wesson SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--(Ammoland.com)- Smith & Wesson Corp., announced that Team Smith & Wesson members continued their dominant performance in 2010 by taking home two national titles and multiple high honors as part of the United States Practical Shooting Association (USPSA) Back-to-Back Handgun Nationals.

Finishing behind Miculek in the division, teammate David Olhasso was able to post wins on three stages shooting a Smith & Wesson Model 625. Olhasso’s score earned him 3rd Overall while Josh Lentz finished closely behind in 4th place shooting a Smith & Wesson Model 646 revolver. Rounding out the Top 5 for Team Smith & Wesson was John Bagakis who competed in the match with a Smith & Wesson Model 625.

Smith & Wesson served as the title sponsor for the event, with team members competing in the USPSA Production, Revolver and Limited-10 Nationals matches.

In the Women’s Division, team Smith & Wesson member Annett Aysen kept her undefeated streak alive by winning her fourth consecutive USPSA Ladies Revolver National Title. Aysen delivered a great performance with her Smith & Wesson Model 625 revolver, posting wins on all but two of the stages of fire.

During the three events, team members helped extend the company’s historic season by raising the tally to 130 championship titles. Helping pave the way to this year’s all-time season high win record was Smith & Wesson Champion Jerry Miculek and fellow teammate Annett Aysen.

“There are only a few more matches left in the season and Team Smith & Wesson’s title count has already well surpassed last year’s very productive season,” said Tom Kelly, Vice President of Marketing for Smith & Wesson. “With 130 title wins to their credit, our team members have continued to show that regardless of the division or discipline, they have the combination of great equipment from Smith & Wesson along with the tremendous talent to exceed in any match. We

USPSA Limited-10 Nationals Team Smith & Wesson member Phil Strader competed with a SW1911 and earned a top five finish in the division at the USPSA Limited-10 match, held at the Desert Sportsmen in Las Vegas, Nevada. Annie Oakley Probably the most famous female shooter is Annie Oakley. Born Phoebe Anne Moses, she had to shoot because she needed to put food on the table after her father’s death. By the time she was a teen, she’d entered and won so many shooting contests that she was banned from entering many of them, again, because everyone assumed she’d win and no one else would pay the entry fee to compete!

involves shooting solid silhouette targets of chickens, pigs, turkeys and rams that are set at different distances. There are separate competitions for pistols and rifles, and there are classes of competition within rifle and pistol so you compete against people who’ve spent about as much as you spent for your gun. This is an unusual aspect of classification but a welcome one. It prevents a shooter from using a very expensive gun to outshoot another person with a modestly priced gun. It really levels the playing field! While there are a number of pink guns that manufacturers have aimed at female shooters, the selection for women is actually much larger. Colors are important for some women, but ergonomics make the shooting experience much more pleasurable. Choosing a lighter-weight gun and one with a slightly shorter pull (or an adjustable stock or buttpad) will go a long way toward making shooting more enjoyable for women who don’t want to wrangle 9-lb. guns that are 4 ft. long! Annie Oakley is the most famous female shooter. One last thought: Many shooting instructors have found that women are better shots than men. The reason seems to be that women have fewer preconceptions about shooting and are more open to instruction. And, many women have greater concentration than men of the same age.

When she was in her teens, she entered a shooting contest against professional sharpshooter Frank Butler. She beat him soundly. He took the defeat in stride…and eventually married her and became her business manager. When Buffalo Bill’s Wild West traveling show hired her, she became an international sensation and was one of the most famous women of her day. Chief Sitting Bull, who was part of the show, nicknamed her “Little Sure Shot.” She would be known by that moniker forever.

I guess you could say that women tend to be natural shooters!

These days, many of our famous female shooters are Olympic athletes, including two-time Gold Medalist Kim Rhode, a double-trap shooter. The Olympic training center in Colorado Springs, Colorado, is where our Olympic hopefuls train. Most of today’s Olympic shooting competitions are with airguns. Air rifle shooting requires the use of special clothing that helps stabilize the shooter in the offhand position and increases accuracy. Air pistol shooters don’t wear special clothing. This type of shooting is done at 10 meters at paper targets, is the largest segment of airgun shooting and is enjoyed by well over a million shooters in the U.S. Field Target Shooting There are several other airgun disciplines to investigate. Field target is a sport that was started in England and is enjoying a growth spurt in the U.S. because men, women and children can competitively participate. It involves shooting at a steel silhouette target that has a hole in it, called the “kill zone,” that you must hit to get a point. It’s shot from a sitting, kneeling, crouching or standing position, depending on the location of the target. The targets are set at varying ranges, usually from 10 to 55 yards. Generally speaking, field target is shot with Field Target Air Rifles, but there are some clubs that offer air pistol competitions, too.

Benchrest Shooting Benchrest is another air rifle sport. It originally started as a sport for firearms. It involves shooting an air rifle at paper targets at set distances. The forearms of the guns are rested, but the shooter holds the rear of the gun. A certain number of shots must be fired within a set period of time. All shots are at one set distance.

Busy Month for Deer Hunters

Changes in Attitudes One of the greatest changes has been the change in attitude toward the taking of a deer. When I started deer hunting more than 50 years ago, not only did we have to travel to one of several counties to just see a deer but we also were brought up to shoot any buck. If it had antlers, shoot it. And today there is nothing really wrong with that if you are satisfied with the deer you shoot. Point is, a trophy is in the eyes of the person who takes it. While we all recognize that a buck with eight or 10 tines, heavy and wide, to be a true trophy, there are people who enjoy the hunt much more and simply want to shoot a deer. They are just as happy with a spike or four point as they would be with a 10 point.

NOV 08, 2010 12:53P.M. Busy Month for Deer Hunters By Frank Jezioro – Director, West Virginia Division of Natural Resources

Attitudes are changing as the reasons for hunting are changing. With so many social programs to help people, few people hunt now to feed their families. More and more hunt for recreation and the total experience of being out of doors and closer to nature.

West Virginia Wild

But that feeling is changing in our hunters, especially our younger hunters. These hunters are now more interested in shooting a truly mature buck that has a 14-20 inch spread with eight or 10 long points. If they shoot a trophy buck like this, they are satisfied. Point is, they are interested in shooting one true trophy deer instead of three immature bucks. Trying to satisfy all segments of the hunting community led us to establish some areas with special antler regulations in hopes of growing more mature bucks.

West Virginia DNR SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. – -(Ammoland.com)- When we think of the largest single-day sporting event West Virginians take part in, many say it is the day West Virginia and Marshall play football. Others say it is the day when a NASCAR race is going on. The truth is that the opening day of the buck gun deer season sees more West Virginians taking an active part than any other sporting event that takes place in West Virginia. On the opening day we will see nearly 300,000 orange clad hunters actively in the woods and fields hunting. When you throw in the opening of rabbit, raccoon, bear gun season and the opening of the trapping season, November becomes the busiest month of the year for the hunting and trapping community.

Busy Month for Deer Hunters Deer Management Concerns In the past couple of years, we are getting more and more requests from our hunters to limit the number of bucks that a hunter can kill, from the three we can now legally take to one or no more than two. They are indicating that they would like to see the DNR limit the number of bucks killed to one or two and to remove the regulations and let the hunter kill both bucks with the weapon of their choice. In other words, if a bow hunter wanted to kill both his bucks with a bow that would be legal. Or if a gun hunter wanted to kill both his bucks with a rifle or a muzzleloader

This figure highlights the fact that hunting in West Virginia is truly big business as well as a part of our heritage and tradition. If you check, you will find that there is someone in nearly every West Virginia family who hunts or fishes. This is one reason that the Division of Natural Resources is so important to so many people in our state. Through sound management and changes in natural habitat, the deer herd has spread and increased to the point that we have good deer hunting close to nearly

When you look at other states that have outstanding hunting for trophy whitetail bucks, you find that they limit the buck kill to one buck per hunter per year and you can take it with the weapon of your choice. I have hunted in Kansas, Ohio and Montana, and all follow this system and continue to produce large bucks.

NOV 08, 2010 12:34P.M. Firearms Restaurant Carry Can Pass Now With Your Help

But I go back to what I said originally, in that we still have people that are not at all interested in killing the biggest buck in the woods and they simply want to kill a deer and enjoy the fun of the hunt. So, to get more input, we hope to be able to get some questions out to the hunting public this spring during our sectional meetings to get a better feel for what our hunters really want as far as deer hunting opportunities go. We already know that our hunters are not interested in a state-wide antler restriction, but do like the idea of having several areas set aside for trophy or older age deer management. We must also realize that we need to do what is necessary to keeping the deer herd to a number that doesn’t outgrow the habitat. This is where our hunters are playing a very significant part of deer management and taking as many deer as they are allowed to take. While some frown on taking antlerless deer, they need to realize that one of the keys to growing large bucks is removing a large number of does. This is where the deer management becomes complex. We don’t have too many deer on the national forest, state forests or our wildlife management areas. We only have too many deer in areas where the public is not allowed to hunt.

This is the time that most “controversial” gun bills in Ohio are signed.

Why? Because many people who will vote for our bill are not coming back to office, so it won’t hurt them politically. Because many people who will vote for our bill have been re-elected for a number of years, and its politically safe to vote for our issue NOW. The window of opportunity to get Restaurant Carry sent to the Governor and signed into law before the new General Assembly and Governor take office is incredibly short. New Jersey Fish and Game MANSFIELD TWP, NJ --(Ammoland.com)- Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Bob Martin today officially dedicated a newly expanded pheasant rearing complex at the State owned Rockport Pheasant Farm in Mansfield Township, Warren County. The new complex, expected to raise more than 55,000 pheasants annually, was created at no cost to taxpayers, with the $1.3 million project financed by sportsmen’s fees and stamps, the Commissioner said. The new complex at Rockport, where pheasants have been raised by the State since 1923, replaces an outdated facility that was long overdue for a major overhaul.

9 November 2010

The pheasant complex unveiled today includes a new brooder house, egg incubators and hatching room. These upgrades create a modern operation that includes automatic egg turning in forced-air circulating incubators, and automated feeding.

The Rockport Pheasant Farm is open daily from 7:30 a.m. to dusk, and is located on Rockport Rd. (Rt. 629) roughly 3.5 miles south of Main St. (Rt. 46) in Hackettstown, Warren County. It is a popular destination for families and school groups seeking to learn about wildlife, or to simply enjoy nature. The historic Morris Canal, its towpath intact, also passes through the farm. Picnicking is allowed, but there are no food or toilet facilities available.

Funding for the project was provided through the Hunters and Anglers account within the Division of Fish and Wildlife; no state tax dollars were used. The cost of raising and stocking pheasants is also entirely borne by hunters who purchase pheasant stamps in addition to their hunting licenses. This makes the Rockport facility a prime example of a “user pays” system.

For more information visit http://www.state.nj.us/dep/fgw/rockport.htm

“This is a great example of the transformation taking place at the DEP,’’ said Commissioner Martin. “This incredible new facility will allow us to continue doing an important job for our sportsmens’ community, but in a more efficient and less costly manner.’’

“Significant energy and labor cost savings will be realized with the new building and state of the art equipment,” said Commissioner Martin. “This modernization will pay dividends for hunters now, and well into the future, and has been done during tough economic times at virtually no cost to the residents of the State.”

Selecting a Folding Knife for Personal Protection

DEP Division of Fish and Wildlife Director David Chanda said the upgrades will ensure reliable annual production of superior pheasants for the same or lower cost than if birds were purchased from suppliers.

NOV 08, 2010 11:24A.M.

“This is a major milestone at the historic Rockport Pheasant Farm, and good news for New Jersey hunters who purchase Pheasant and Quail Stamps,” said Chanda. “New energy efficient, automated systems for egg incubation and chick care have replaced hand operated equipment and labor intensive chick handling and care regimes that date back to the Farm’s creation nearly a century ago.”

Selecting a Folding Knife for Personal Protection By Chris Fry

Chanda noted the Rockport Pheasant Farm will continue to upgrade and modernize as technology improves and funding becomes available. The Rockport Pheasant Farm is a 492-acre facility located within the 1,200 acre Rockport Wildlife Management Area. It is operated by the DEP’s Division of Fish and Wildlife, and first began producing pheasants for Garden State hunters 87 years ago. Today, more than 55,000 pheasants are raised annually for stocking on 25 Wildlife Management Areas statewide. In addition to serving the sporting public, Rockport also provides a significant economic boost to New Jersey’s economy. Based on the 200708 NJ Firearm Hunter Harvest Survey, nearly 12,000 hunters spent more than $4,300,000 (excluding license and permit fees) hunting “Rockport Rockets” — so-called because the state-raised pheasants have a reputation for being extremely fast in flight. That includes income to local businesses, such as gas stations, diners and restaurants, convenience stores, sporting goods stores and taxidermists.

Tactical Folding Knives

to the accessing process. This is largely user preference. Dedicated, consistent practice will allow some to access the knife from tip down carry rapidly. Just be aware that possession does not equal proficiency. 4) Robust Opening Mechanism- Research the different opening mechanisms such as the stud, hole, disc, auto opening, wave, assisted opening etc… Some guys (who can own them) love the auto opening knives but remember that under stress you may hit that button and open that knife when you may not want it opened. Waved knives like everything have pros and cons and do require proper training in indexing and deploying the blade.

Modern Defensive Training Systems

I recommend the stud mechanism or hole like on a Spyderco or Benchmade TFK. These mechanisms are simple to deploy and will not open without me. Assisted opening knives often compromise the grip on the knife in order to actuate the assist mechanism which could lead to major problems during standing grapple and in-fight weapon access.

Utica, NY --(Ammoland.com)- Tactical folding knife (TFK) selection for personal protection requires as much thought as choosing a handgun for every day carry (EDC). In my experience most people just go to a local sporting goods store and pick whatever knife looks cool. This is unfortunate because a TFK or small fixed blade (SFB) can be carried more readily in non-permissive environments than most CCW pistols.

5) One Hand Opening- The folder you choose must allow you to open it one handed. During a critical incident your primary or support hand may be tied up fending or striking your opponent. You need to be able to access and deploy your TFK with one hand (either hand) and under the pressure and stress of an attack.

Selection of a TFK for personal protection or on-duty carry should not be a random process and several elements should be taken into consideration.

6) Non-Slip Surface -The grip or handle scales should be a non-slip texture such as a checked or stippled surface made of G10, zytel osurfacer ABS plastic. Hands may become covered in sweat or blood making anything you grasp slippery and difficult to retain. No stainless steel or polished wood scales for a personal protection knife if you intend to possibly defend your life with it.

The folder you choose for personal protection needs to possess a few basic attributes: 1) Strong Lock/Hold Open Mechanism- It is imperative that whatever folder you choose, that it stay open during interpersonal defensive use. You may be thrusting the blade into hard surfaces such as bone which could cause a weak lock to collapse. Various locking mechanisms are available to include traditional lock backs, liner locks, rolling locks, lockpins, mono-lock and the axis lock. Most commercial grade “Tactical Folding Knives” feature one of these type locks and they are all suitable on a personal protection folder. One caution; carefully test out any lockback knife if considering it for ElocksDC for personal defense. Depending upon where the lock mechanism is placed along the spine of the folder, one of your fingers could depress the lock causing it to close when gripping the knife tightly such as during a critical life or death situation under extreme stress.

7) Blade Design- Different blade designs offer different advantages. For me, it is more “methodology” driven. If you have trained or follow a school of thought that teaches slashing as a primary defense then a curved or drop point blade may be for you. If you follow a more point driven methodology then a needle-point or tanto type blade design known for penetration is more applicable.

Blade Length- Laws can vary greatly depending upon what state, city or county you reside in depending upon who you speak with. For example, NYS law says nothing about blade length. However I have spoken to numerous Law Enforcement Officers and district attorneys from different counties that say four inches is the legal limit. It has also been stated to me that blade length is measured from where the sharpened blade starts or what is referred to as the choil or on a fixed blade where the ricasso ends; essentially the edge or sharpened surface of the blade. Another individual told me blade length is measured from where the “metal starts coming out of the handle” to include the choil and ricasso. What this means is that you could have a 4″ length sharpened edge according to knife manufacturer specifications (which is what manufacturers go by) but when you add the unsharpened choil and ricasso you have 4.25-4.50″ of blade. This may or may not make that knife illegal in your jurisdiction. Because of this obvious lack of clarity or

2) Fit in Hand when Closed- Preferably with some impact surface available at the top and bottom. You may have to access the folder while under attack when accessing of the folder is possible but not deployment of the blade. The exposed portion of the folding knife (out the top and bottom of the hand when gripped) can provide an effective impact tool until the blade can be deployed. 3) Tip Up Carry- Look for a folder that allows tip UP carry when in the pocket. This carry method eliminates having to rotate the folder into the hand when drawing from your carry position. Tip down carry requires rotation of the knife in the hand prior to deploying the blade. Under the stresses of a close range confrontation this adds another fine motor skill

uniformity I recommend folders that are spec’d out at 2.0-3.5 inches for every day carry.

9) Pocket Clip- Finally, when selecting a tactical folding knife careful attention should be paid to the method in which you intend to carry. The most common method found on TFK’s today is the pocket clip. With this clip the TFK can be clipped inside a pant pocket, waistband, shirt lapel or a myriad of other locations. Look for a strong metal clip which can be attached to either side of the knife for left or right hand carry. Some folding knives such as older Cold Steel models first came with plastic clips which were prone to breakage. Choose a knife with a clip that is dark in color, the idea is to remain low profile when carrying any personal protection tool. Some TFK’s come with a bright silver clip which draws attention and/or reflects light. A dark clip will blend in with clothing and not stand out.

Michigan - -(Ammoland.com)- Q: What is the MCL number for a person being able to openly carry a gun in Michigan?

Tags: AR15 Accessories, AR15 Uppers, Gun Accessories, Gun Parts, MDTS, Modern Defensive Training Systems, Shooting Accessories

A: Your question refers to the Michigan Compiled Laws numbering system. All of Michigan’s statutes are available online at www.Legislature.MI.gov.

AMMOLAND.COM SHOOTING SPORTS NEWS

When Exposure of a Concealed Pistol is Guilty of Open Carry

They are organized in a numbering system and all of them begin with “MCL.” The answer is that the right to carry a gun openly is not actually part of the MCL system. Rather, it is laid out in Article I, Section 6 of the Michigan Constitution, which states: “Every person has a right to keep and bear arms for the defense of himself and the state.”

NOV 08, 2010 09:30A.M. When Exposure of a Concealed Pistol is Guilty of Open Carry

This clause is more clearly worded than the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” Because the Michigan provision, adopted almost two centuries after the adoption of the US Constitution, uses the phrase, “defense of himself,” there has never been the level of debate regarding whether the right was an individual right that there was regarding the Second Amendment. For many years during the 20th Century, there was confusion in some jurisdictions brought on by a misunderstanding of the term “Militia” in the Second Amendment. That confusion was cleared up, for the most part, by the US Supreme Court’s decision in the Heller case recently. For quite some time in Michigan, local units of government attempted to restrict the right to bear arms by passing local ordinances purporting to prohibit open carry. These laws were rendered void in 1990 with the enactment of MCL 123.1102, which became effective in March of 1991 and states: “A local unit of government shall not impose special taxation on, enact or enforce any ordinance or regulation pertaining to, or regulate in any other manner the ownership, registration, purchase, sale, transfer, transportation, or possession of pistols or other firearms, ammunition for pistols or other firearms, or components of pistols or other firearms, except as otherwise provided by federal law or a law of this state.” This means that the Michigan Constitution, and state statutes, control firearms in Michigan and no city, township, or county can make its own gun laws.

Someone who has a Concealed Pistol License (CPL) may conceal a pistol and not be guilty of the crime of “CCW.”

17

Today’s Tabbloid PERSONAL NEWS FOR news@ammoland.com

9 November 2010

There is another concept in law called the Rule of Lenity, which stands for the proposition that whatever is not prohibited by law is allowed. So, the constitutional right, combined with no state statute prohibiting open carry means that open carry is lawful. If the gun is concealed, it is subject to the crime of carrying a concealed weapon, commonly referred to as “CCW,” which specifies a prison term of up to five years for carrying a concealed weapon without a license. The only concealed weapon for which a license is available in Michigan is a pistol. So, someone who has a Concealed Pistol License (CPL) may conceal a pistol and not be guilty of the crime of “CCW.” Open carry is the answer when a CPL holder inadvertently exposes his pistol. As long as he is in a place where he, and his pistol are allowed to be, and he is not threatening a fellow citizen without justification, the fact that the pistol was momentarily unconcealed is of no legal consequence.
