Studies have shown that participation in sport shooting is declining, which is mirrored by a decline in hunting participation. Both declines are a growing concern for state fish and wildlife agencies, non-profit organizations and conservationists because a large percentage of conservation projects are funded through the taxes on firearm sales and ammunition.

The NWTF is helping to counteract this trend by recruiting and retaining youth hunters, shooters and conservationists through its JAKES (Juniors Acquiring Knowledge Ethics and Sportsmanship) outreach program. Local NWTF chapters partner with various non-profit organizations, and state and federal agencies to conduct field days across the United States and Canada that introduce youth to the outdoors.

The JAKES program is NWTF’s education and outreach program for youth 12 years old and younger, while Xtreme JAKES is for teens ages 13 to 17. NWTF local chapters host approximately 1,000 JAKES and Xtreme JAKES events each year for more than 75,000 kids.
Thompson Center Arms ROCHESTER, N.H. --(Ammoland.com)- Thompson/Center Arms Company, Inc., a Smith & Wesson company, mourns the loss of longtime employee and Master Gun Designer, Ken French.
“This exciting program will give NWTF volunteers throughout the nation more opportunities to get kids outdoors and help them enjoy shooting sports,” said Mandy Harling, JAKES program manager.
Ken passed away on August 30th after battling cancer at the age of 71.
In the first year of the new youth shooting sports program, the NWTF will provide fully equipped shooting trailers for Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia. More trailers will be purchased in ensuing years for additional regions of the country. Trailers will be available for use through state agencies and NWTF state chapters. They will come equipped with everything needed to set up a safe airgun shooting range at any youth event, including pellet guns, ammunition, safety glasses, hearing protection, targets and pellet traps.
Ken’s legacy with Thompson/Center began in 1967 as the eleventh employee of the newly founded firearms manufacturer. After the retirement of founder Warren Center, Ken’s leadership and talents helped deliver dozens of successful products beginning with the Scout rifle and continuing on through the introduction of the Triumph muzzleloader. After Ken’s retirement in 2007, he enjoyed being a guiding hand to the design and development of the company’s new bolt-action platforms.
“NWTF chapters and grassroots members will help identify and coordinate events, while our organization will continue to partner with state wildlife agencies to make trailers available to other organizations such as Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, FFA, 4-H, Trailblazers, Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever, Kicking Bear, and Boys and Girls Clubs,” Harling said.
“There are few in the firearms industry that had the passion of Ken French,” stated Mark Laney, Thompson/Center Arms Director of Research and Product Development. “His contribution to the designs for Thompson/Center in muzzleloading and single shot rifles are the identity of the company. Not only did he lead the design team, but he set up and developed the top customer service department in the industry before going on to become T/C’s Plant Manager. I, and many long-standing employees, owe a great debt to Ken as mentor, father figure and good friend. We will all miss him deeply.”
“We’ll also create standalone youth shooting sport events or expand local, regional and national sporting clay divisions to include youth divisions.” For more information about the program or to participate, contact Mandy Harling at (803) 637-7550 or mharling@nwtf.net.
Known in the industry as a skilled shot with both handgun and rifle, Ken achieved a high level of success as a competitive silhouette shooter and was nominated as ‘Handgunner of the Year’ several times. His prowess as a woodsman rivaled his gun building talents and that’s where Ken enjoyed being most. Ken’s love of hunting brought him to all parts of the country where his hunting abilities and even-keeled personality earned him the respect of the industry’s top writers and guides.

In a quote from author J. Wayne Fears’ article called, “T/C’s Best Kept Secret: Ken French”, Ken says he was most proud “of the fact that we built really good guns, and stood behind them. If a customer had a problem, we solved it, no questions.” Ken French’s words reflect the company’s long time philosophy of ‘Customer First.’ He lived life like he designed guns -brilliantly simple- hard work, love of family, and a sense of adventure. He will be missed. He is survived by his wife Pam, sons Ernie and Michael and daughters Darlene Small and Donna Goodwin. increases in “barefoot” products, “minimalist” product and Approach Footwear were offset by declines in traditional outdoor categories like Technical Hiking. Outdoor Chain Specialty Retailers, Sporting Goods Retailers, and Department Stores all reported growth in footwear sales in August, with Independent Outdoor Specialty Retailers seeing Outdoor Footwear sales dip 0.2% for the month. One noteworthy item found that while Independent Outdoor Specialty Retailers posted the dip in Outdoor Footwear sales in August – a trend many see as a result of tighter inventories on hot limited-distribution product – sales of nonoutdoor product through the channel actually increased in high-singledigits for the period.
Outdoor Industry Sales Cool With the Weather, Growing by Less Than 1 Percent in August SEP 13, 2010 06:04P.M. Outdoor Industry Sales Cool With the Weather, Growing by Less Than 1 Percent in August Solid Year-to-Date Growth of 8 Percent at the End of July Stalled Out as Summer Sales Draw to a Close.
Outdoor Apparel sales declined in the low-single-digits in August as back-to-school sales failed to materialize for many retailers. Outdoor Outerwear was a major driving force for retail sales during back-toschool in 2009, but this year sales in this category were down. Offsetting the declines in Outerwear, Women’s Activewear was up for the month, particularly Active Lifestyle Dresses, Skirts and Skorts. The primary growth vehicle for outdoor industry sales in August was Outdoor Hardgoods. These categories were impacted by increasing participation trends in key outdoor activities like camping and hiking. In addition, more Americans are looking to National Parks and National Wilderness Areas for vacation opportunities and this shift is translating into gear sales. In particular, the Adventure Travel categories are beginning to spring back to life again following a prolonged down-turn following 9/11. Consumers are now more willing to invest in experiences and they are buying the equipment to support their travel adventures.
Outdoor Industry Association Boulder, CO –-(Ammoland.com)- After several months of solid growth, outdoor product retail sales growth slowed considerably in August, causing growing concern among outdoor retailers and manufacturers.
For a more in-depth discussion around August 2010 retail sales affecting outdoor industry businesses, Outdoor Industry Association will be hosting a webinar on Thursday, September 16 at 2pm (mountain). For more information and to register, visit http://www.outdoorindustry.org/vpwebinars.
According to retail point-of-sale data compiled by SportScanInfo for OIA VantagePoint™, the Official Research of the Outdoor Industry, total outdoor product sales were up 0.9% in August to $816.8 million compared to $809.5 million for the comparable four-week period last year. Sales were driven primarily by growth in Outdoor Hardgoods in the Outdoor Chain Specialty, Internet and Discount/Mass channels, offset in part by declines in Outdoor Footwear and Outdoor Apparel.
OIA VantagePoint is the first and only full market point-of-sale data view built specifically for Outdoor Industry Association members. OIA VantagePoint provides comprehensive visibility into the outdoor marketplace by tracking weekly point-of-sale data from over 10,000 retail doors and websites carrying outdoor products, including over 350 outdoor specialty locations. In-depth sales information is available online within five days of the prior week close – a competitive advantage for businesses who can shift critical resources and react quickly to everchanging consumer preferences.
“It’s a hopeful sign to see the Consumer Confidence Index up in August, but people are purchasing mostly items they consider necessities, with very little add-on shopping to bolster retail numbers,” said Frank Hugelmeyer, president and CEO of the Outdoor Industry Association. “As an industry we’ve weathered the ups and downs of the economy fairly well, growing just under five percent thus far in 2010. Consumers recognize more and more that the outdoors is an easy, accessible and affordable draw where your activities and enjoyment don’t have to be tempered by your budget.”

Wolf Pup In Northeast Washington Indicates State’s Third Breeding Pack
The open house will be held from 1 to 6 p.m. at the Grayling Forest Management Unit office on M-93 in Grayling.

Each year, the DNRE inventories and evaluates one-tenth of state-owned forest. Personnel gather information about the health, quality and quantity of all vegetation; wildlife and fisheries habitat and needs; archeological sites; minerals; recreational use and wildfire potential. They also evaluate social factors, including proximity to roads and neighborhoods, and use on adjacent public and private lands. The DNRE then proposes treatments to ensure the sustainability of the resources and ecosystems. These treatments may include timber harvesting, replanting, and other management activities.

The open house is an opportunity for the public to review proposed treatments and to provide input toward final decisions. It also provides the public an opportunity to talk with foresters and biologists about issues of interest. Maps and information regarding the proposed treatments will be available at the open house, and can be accessed at www.michigan.gov/dnr under the Forests, Land & Water section. A wolf specialist hired by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) caught the 50-pound young wolf earlier this month in northern Pend Oreille County, just south of the Canadian border. Attempts are under way to locate and radio-collar adult wolves in the area.
born in 2009 survived until the end of the year. The pack moves between Washington and Idaho. Allen said there also may be a wolf pack in the Wenaha-Tucannon Wilderness Area of the Umatilla National Forest in southeast Washington, although wolves have not yet been confirmed there. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife radio-collared a yearling wolf south of the area in Oregon earlier this year.
The presence of the pup, and photos of other wolves captured on a remote camera in the area, indicate there is a pack in the area, said Harriet Allen, who heads WDFW’s endangered-species section.
“We know from reports that individual wolves have been roaming in and out of the state in various locations for years,” Allen said, “but documenting and maintaining packs as successful breeding pairs is necessary achieve conservation objectives and move toward eventual removal of the gray wolf from state and federal endangered-species lists.”
“We don’t know at this point whether the den where the pup was born was in Washington or British Columbia,” Allen said. “We plan to monitor the pack next spring to determine the den location. If the den is in Washington, the pack can be considered a Washington pack; if the den is in British Columbia, it is a Canadian pack. Our Canadian colleagues are aware of wolf activity in that area, and will assist with monitoring on their side of the border.”
The gray wolf (Canis lupus) was eliminated from Washington as a reproducing species by the 1930s as a result of trapping, shooting and poisoning, and later was listed for both federal and state protection as an endangered species.
A successful breeding wolf pack is documented by locating a breeding pair of adults with two or more pups that survive until Dec. 31, Allen said.
Gray wolf populations in nearby Idaho, Montana and Wyoming have rebounded in recent years as a result of federal recovery efforts in the northern Rocky Mountains. In 2009 gray wolves were removed from the federal endangered-species list in those areas and the eastern third of Washington, but earlier this year a court decision returned them to federal endangered status.
Washington’s first documented wolf pack was found in July 2008 in western Okanogan County. By December 2009 that pack, named the “Lookout Pack,” included seven animals-two adults, a 2-year-old wolf and four pups born in 2009.
Since 2007, WDFW has been drafting a gray wolf conservation and management plan with a 17-member citizen working group composed of ranchers, hunters, conservationists and others. Public review and scientific peer review of the draft environmental impact statement and plan was conducted last year and earlier this year. WDFW is currently addressing the public and scientific comments on the draft plan, to develop a second draft for review with the working group. A final Environmental Impact Statement and recommended plan is scheduled to be presented to the Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission for review next year.
“The status of the Lookout Pack is uncertain at this time,” Allen said, adding that WDFW has been unable to locate the female wolf since mid-May. The male is still being monitored and no new pups have been found.
• More information about wolves and the WDFW plan process is available at http://wdfw.wa.gov/conservation/gray_wolf/ . • Reports of possible wolf sighting or activity can be made through a toll-free wolf reporting hotline at 1-888-584-9038.
