critical to success than hiding in heavy cover. • Sit against a large stump, blow-down, tree trunk or rock that is wider than your shoulders and higher than your head when calling wild turkeys. • Never wear bright colors, especially not red, white, blue or black because these are the colors of a wild turkey gobbler. Watch out for red, white or blue on your socks, t-shirts, hooded sweatshirts, hats, bandannas, etc. Wear dark undershirts and socks, and pants long enough to be tucked into boots. • Remain still and speak in a loud, clear voice to announce your presence to other hunters if necessary. Never move, wave or make turkey sounds to alert another hunter of your presence. 10 Tips for a Safe Spring Turkey Hunt

• Keep your hands and head camouflaged when calling. • Maintain a clear field of view when using a camouflage blind or netting. • Ensure your decoy is not visible when you are transporting it. Stash the decoy in your vest and make sure the head is not sticking out. If you harvest a wild turkey during your hunting trip, you also should cover the bird’s head and body when carrying it out from your hunting spot. • Put your gun’s safety on and approach the downed bird with your firearm pointed in a safe direction after firing. Never run with a firearm. The National Wild Turkey Federation is committed to making hunter safety a top priority. In 1991, the NWTF initiated the National Turkey Hunting Safety Task Force to complement the hunter safety efforts of state agencies, the International Hunters Education Association, the National Rifle Association and the National Shooting Sports Foundation. The task force – composed of hunting and shooting safety experts from around the country – has met three times since 1992 to develop a comprehensive hunter safety program, and has since produced and distributed more than 1 million pieces of hunting safety information.

National Wild Turkey Federation EDGEFIELD, S.C. --(Ammoland.com)- With wild turkey hunting season still in full swing in many states, the National Wild Turkey Federation has the safety of turkey hunters in mind. Safety is a key element when you’re in the woods mimicking the sounds of wild turkeys. A safe turkey hunter is much like a safe driver — you must be defensive minded. Also, keep in mind that a safe hunter is an effective hunter.

Thanks to the cooperative efforts of the members of the National Turkey Hunting Task Force, the number of turkey hunting incidents continues to decrease even as turkey hunters flock to the woods in increasing numbers. Spring turkey hunting incidents have decreased from a high of 8.1 per 100,000 in 1991 to a low of 2.95 per 100,000 in 2001, the most recent year this data was updated.

Here are 10 tips to consider when you’re in the woods: • Leave the area if you suspect there’s another hunter already working the same bird.

Note: Before heading afield this spring, check with your state or provincial wildlife agency for hunting seasons and bag limits.

• Resist the urge to stalk turkey sounds. It is nearly impossible to sneak up on a turkey. It is also unethical and could lead to an accident.

March is the breeding season for hares, thus their odd behavior of boxing and jumping during this time of year.

This is not a new phenomenon, and the earliest written testament to it was circa 1500, in Blowbol’s Test reprinted by W. C. Hazlitt in Remains Early Popular Poetry of England, 1864.

It states, “Thanne [th]ey begyn to swere and to stare, And be as braynles as a Marshe hare.”

Crazy as a March Hare MAR 10, 2011 02:59P.M.

In hunting circles, the phrase derived from a male hare’s (bucks) tendency to travel several miles to breed with a female (doe) during the month of March. When a hunter’s dog would disturb the buck, he would return to his home area miles away with the dog often in pursuit.

Crazy as a March Hare

This meant the hunters would either lose their dog or have to travel miles to find it. The phrase “hare-brained” refers to the same behavior. This is also old and is referenced in Edward Hall’s Chronicle, 1548: “My desire is that none of you be so unadvised or harebrained [sic] as to be the occasion that …” Other interesting facts about hares include that the rabbit in Bambi named Thumper derived its name from a female hares’ tendencies with her young. Hares do not live in the ground like cottontails, so they have their young above ground and the babies (leverets) spread out to hide so that if one is discovered by a predator it will not find the entire clutch. When it is time for the young to nurse, the mother hare will “thump” her back foot rapidly to call them in to feed.

BORESIGHTER BOLT

X-Bow Laser Bore Sighter by Slammer Hunting Innovations

1. Remove the nock battery cap by turning counter clockwise. Install four L626 batteries with the positive (flat side) facing outwards. Replace the nock battery cap and tighten clockwise until laser turns on (DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN). Your laser boresighter is now ready to use. Loosen the battery cap slightly to turn off.

MAR 10, 2011 01:05P.M. X-Bow Laser Bore Sighter by Slammer Hunting Innovations

2. Place crossbow in gun vise and secure into shooting position, be sure to tighten vise clamps. 3. Place target at 7-yards distance. 4. DO NOT COCK CROSSBOW. Turn on laser boresighter bolt and place UNDER BOWSTRING like you would a bolt to fire, sliding the bolt all the way back to the trigger mechanism.

SlammerHi Black Rock, Arkansas --(Ammoland.com)- Crossbow hunting for deer and other big game is spreading across the continent.

5. Notice where the laser is projecting on your target and adjust the shooting vise to center the alser dot onto the target bull’s-eye. After centering the laser onto the bull’seye, turn off and remove the laser boresighter. Adjust your scope or other sighting device to the center of the bulls-eye.

The northeast region of the United States is establishing deer seasons for crossbows where they have never been allowed before. Even in the western states of Montana and Utah crossbow seasons have been established. The thousands of hunters who have made the transition to the crossbow and those who will have found that sighting in a crossbow can be a lengthy, time consuming process, but there is help available right now. The X-Bow Laser Bore Sighter by Slammer Hunting Innovations has made the sighting in process quick and simple.

6. Place target at 20 yards, load and fire crossbow bolt at target (3 shots are recommended to insure your grouping properly). Fine tune windage and elevation settings to center into target bull’s-eye (if needed) 7. 20 YARD REFERENCE POINT. Once you’re shooting tight groups into the bull’s- eye, replace target with fresh one and center scope crosshairs into the target bull’s- eye. WITHOUT COCKING CROSSBOW turn on crossbow laser boresighter and LOAD UNDER BOWSTRING. Notice where the laser projects on the target and draw a circle around the laser dot. You now have a 20 yard reference point if you ever need to change your crossbow scope.

The X-Bow Laser Bore Sighter follows the principles of sighting in with a laser bore sighter for a rifle, but it is in the design of a crossbow arrow with a finely tuned laser which is calibrated to the inside of the arrow shaft. The nock of the arrow is also the switch to activate the laser which is powered by four small batteries located inside the shaft. The sight in process is best done with the crossbow in a gun vise or similar devise and set up seven (7) yards from the target. Simply slide the laser devise under the string of the crossbow exactly as you would an arrow. Turning the laser on will project a laser dot on the target. Adjust the vise holding the crossbow to center the laser dot in the center of the bull’s eye, then remove and turn off the X-Bow Laser Boresighter at this point.

8. CALCULATING ARROW DROP. If you measure the distance from the laser dot circle to the target bullseye you can calculate the drop of your crossbow bolt at 20 yards! 9. SIGHT CARD METHOD. Once your sighted in you can place a fresh target or sight card at 7- yards and center your scope crosshairs into the target bull’s-eye and place the laser boresighter on your crossbow and circle where the laser projects on the target. You now have a future reference point to change out or re-sight your crossbow scope at 7-yards!

Then adjust the windage and elevation of the scope or red dot sight to the exact point in the center of the bull’s eye to correlate where the laser dot was located. At this point, the crossbow will be dead on at twenty (20) yards. The whole process takes only a few minutes and your first arrow out of the your crossbow will be in the bull’s eye at twenty yards.

10. CHECKING SIGHTS PRIOR TO THE HUNT. Using the sight card method again, you can set up your fresh target at 10 feet and center your scope crosshairs into the bull’s-eye and load the boresighter and again circle where the laser projects on the target. You now have a method of checking

Whitetails Unlimited Funds 17.6 Million in Projects for Local Home State Chapters

Ohio --(Ammoland.com)-Funding from Whitetails Unlimited chapters has provided more than $17.6 million for local projects in the Central Whitetail states of Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin; and despite the economic downturn, attendance at WTU events remains strong. “After looking at our numbers at the end of FY 2010, we find that over the years WTU has been able to fund projects totaling $17,681,729 in Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin,” said Whitetails Unlimited Executive Director Pete Gerl.

“Our membership remains strong in this central area of Midwest deer hunting, and we expect to continue funding projects in the same manner as in the past.” Whitetails Unlimited conducts fundraising events to raise resources for conservation, education, and the preservation of the hunting tradition. Unique among conservation organizations, WTU returns 50 percent of net event proceeds back to local chapters, to use on local projects. “WTU’s local chapters in Wisconsin have funded hunter safety classes, youth outdoor education events, habitat acquisition and improvement projects, handicapped and wounded warrior hunts, range improvements, scholarships, and many, many other projects,” said WTU Field Director Jamie Merckx. Wisconsin has three full-time field directors, and they all work closely with their local chapters, according to Wisconsin Field Director Jim Wiltinger.

The Northeast Wisconsin WTU Chapter held their annual Youth Pheasant Hunt last November for hunter safety graduates from the Coleman, Gillett, Lena, Oconto, and Oconto Falls areas. The youngsters shot clay pigeons and archery before they hunted pheasants with local hunters and their dogs.

“Each chapter has different interests and local needs, and our job is to facilitate the banquet in order to raise as much money for projects as possible.” LeRoy Schultz, WTU field director in northern Wisconsin, said, “We’ve been able to improve habitat and do many varied local projects, and it’s just great seeing what a difference it can make in a community. It’s humbling to see that we’ve raised more than $10 million over the years in Wisconsin.” The total for Wisconsin is $10,693,142.

Michigan has a similar history; the first WTU banquet was held in 1985, and $15,818 was raised statewide that year. Since then, $5,161,196 has been raised by Michigan chapters for local projects.

Michigan Field Director Jim Kurdziel also sees many of the same type of projects financed by his chapters as in Wisconsin. “Hunter education is big, and many chapters have, or will, provide financing to local schools so they can participate in the National Archery in the Schools Program.” Jason Maraskine, WTU’s second Michigan field director, agrees.

About: Founded in 1982, Whitetails Unlimited is a national nonprofit conservation organization. Our mission is to raise funds in support of education, habitat enhancement and acquisition, and the preservation of the hunting tradition for the benefit of the white-tailed deer and other wildlife. “Our chapters are very involved with projects that bring other people outdoors: range improvements, education projects, youth camps, and NASP are just a few examples.” In Illinois, WTU Field Director Darel Martin covers the entire state, where $1,827,391 has been raised for local projects since 1984. “Illinois has had an amazing string of fundraising success, starting with just three thousand dollars in 1984, but growing to almost a quarter-million dollars last year,” said Martin. The exact amounts are $3,123 in 1984, and $245,584 in 2010. “I’m really proud to represent Whitetails Unlimited in Illinois, and I know it’s a cliché, but it’s true, together we can accomplish great things.”

“Local Illinois chapters help support the Illinois DNR, 4-H Shooting Sports, Boy Scouts, youth education days, hunter education, range and habitat improvement, and many, many other projects, including NASP,” said Martin. “Local banquets are a way for just a few people to do a little extra work, and have a huge impact in their local area. It’s gratifying to look at the cumulative numbers, because when you’re working day-to-day you don’t realize how much it adds up.”

The Rattlebox is the world’s first rattling product acoustically designed to match the frequency, pitch and tone real antlers produce during sparring episodes of whitetail bucks.

No tags for this post.

The inventor Mike Castner made the announcement: “Rattling in bucks has become a vital part of the hunting process utilized by more successful, savvy hunters. We developed the Rattlebox using a special polymer material and design that alters the size, shape, flexibility and thickness of material of each individual nodule in the Rattlebox. By engineering the materials and design as we do, we are able to authentically replicate a full range of real antler tones.

The authenticity of these tones was then tested and confirmed in a professional sound lab through a Frequency Spectrum Sound Analysis. The Rattlebox is the only rattling product that can show this relationship to real antler sounds scientifically. It’s also the only rattling product with true onehand operation. With the Rattlebox there is nothing to put down or away, if a buck runs in you simply let it go and take your shot.”

The Rattlebox replicates the sounds made when two mature, full racked 120” class 8 point bucks lock antlers (unlike standard ½ racks from other companies). The Rattlebox is uniquely designed to be used with either hand and can be worn around leg or attached to a tree and to be used with minimal movement. The Rattlebox can also be regulated for light sparring to major fights.

We thank them for recognizing that the citizens of Maryland see these issues as important and that they have a responsibility to hear our voices. The day went predictably with those that stand on the opposite side of the issues offering up emotionally charged rhetoric and false statistics while our side stuck to the issues and presented the committee members with concrete numbers and fact based analysis of the bills. Also predictably, those that stood on the opposing side of the issues were almost universally paid representatives of various issue groups or government agencies, whereas those that stood with us were citizens who took time from their jobs to attend the hearings.

It’s too early to give any definitive report on the outcome of the bills heard yesterday. There are still several weeks to go.

1332 Cape Saint Claire Road #342 Annapolis, Maryland 21409 240-446-6782

There was one concrete thing that occurred yesterday that we had gotten wind of earlier in the week. Delegate Simmons’ HB730, relating to mental health and firearms ownership, will be substantially amended. The references to the DSM-IV will be removed and the bill will form a task force to study the issue rather than enact any new laws at this time. Delegate Simmons provided a very cogent rationale for the changes by stating that he wished to examine the topic in a “cold and sober” manner rather than seeing the General Assembly rush to judgement in the wake of an Arizona or Virginia Tech-like incident. While we are reserving our position statement on the amendments until we’ve seen them, we are encouraged by the Delegate’s willingness to examine this emotionally charged issue carefully.

Mission Statement: Maryland Shall Issue is an all volunteer, nonpartisan effort dedicated to the preservation and advancement of all gunowners’ rights in Maryland, with a primary goal of CCW reform to allow all law-abiding citizens the right to carry a concealed weapon; and to the education of the community to the awareness that ‘shall issue’ laws have, in all cases, resulted in decreased rates of violent crime. in municipal parks, but in state parks as well. The substitute was quickly adopted as the working vehicle for the bill.

call them whenever you can.

COMMITTEE FIGHT Anti-gun Reps. Deborah Ross (D-Wake, GRNC 0-star), Bill Faison (DDurham, **), and Larry Hall (D-Durham, 0-star) tried to tie up the bill with repeated questioning and with contradictory and shifting amendments. Ross demanded that, in restaurants, servers ask diners ordering alcohol whether they are carrying firearms. In a confusing array of amendments to amendments, ultimately the committee passed an amendment to the bill under which restaurants MAY but are not REQUIRED to ask those ordering alcohol of their status. As noted below, GRNC will vociferously oppose even this weakened language on the House floor.

Deliver This Message ————— Honorable Members of the NC House: For sixteen years, North Carolina concealed handgun permit-holders have proven themselves sane, sober and lawabiding. Their overwhelming responsibility is demonstrated by the fact that permit revocations run mere tenths of a single percent. Because the ability of lawful North Carolinians to protect themselves and their families in restaurants and parks is long overdue, I STRONGLY URGE YOU TO SUPPORT HOUSE BILL 111: “Concealed Handgun Permit Valid in Parks and Restaurants” by all means substantive and procedural, and to pass the bill WITHOUT WEAKENDING AMENDMENTS. Under the bill, restaurants would still be able to post against firearms, and nothing would change the current prohibition on permit-holders consuming alcohol while carrying firearms.

An equally confusing series of amendments was offered by Faison, who tried to remove both municipal and state parks from the bill. After Hilton, Barnhart and Steen opposed Faison’s proposals, they ultimately failed in an 8-5 vote. In an effort to tie up the bill, Faison repeatedly dogged bill sponsors with questions about why permit-holders need to protect their families in restaurants, demanding unavailable crime statistics and complaining “Where’s the problem?” Hall painted fanciful pictures of shootouts between patrons in restaurants, and demanded exclusion of parks for the sake of “youth groups,” saying he didn’t want permit-holders “further endangering” kids.

I also expect you to support removing Representative Deborah Ross’ amendment which would require permitholders to disclose whether they are carrying firearms to restaurant servers, patrons, and potentially criminals. Under the Ross amendment, if a permit-holder orders an alcoholic beverage for someone else – even though the permit holder consumes no alcohol – he or she could be required to make that tactically unsound and potentially dangerous disclosure. If not removed, the Ross amendment will eventually cost lives.

But leading the charge to subvert gun owners’ ability to protect themselves was Ross, who claimed support for her weakening amendment from the Restaurant Association (whose lobbyist then stood to oppose the Ross amendment), and whined that concealed carry is specifically exempted from the right to keep and bear arms enumerated in the North Carolina Constitution. IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUIRED HB 111 could head to the House floor as early as tomorrow, and almost certainly by next week. Immediate take the following actions:
