Michigan DNR Announces Partial Closure of North Central State Trail in Cheboygan County

The Indian River Weather Station reported 1.48 inches of rainfall in five hours on Wednesday. DNR officials said that landowners near the NCST remarked that they haven’t seen anything like this in over 30 years.

MAY 02, 2011 06:52P.M. The NCST is located on old railroad grade between Gaylord and Mackinaw City, and was improved with a new limestone surface in 2007. The water rose over the former grade in several locations, but washed out just two locations. The majority of the compacted limestone trail surface remained in place after the flood waters went down.

Veteran Outdoors’ Sophomore Season to Debut on Sportsman Channel

Now the 15-year-old sophomore is a veteran in her fifth season competing at the 42nd Cornhusker Trapshoot. On Friday she shot an 87X100 at 16-yard targets during competition in the senior high division. Her squad on Friday included four boys. She is used to competing with boys.

“She irritates the boys,” said Jack Wiese, a Ducks Unlimited member from Grand Island and the person who taught Sorahan how to shoot.

Veteran Outdoors’ Sophomore Season to Debut on Sportsman Channel

Wiese taught Sorahan how to shoot with the discipline he learned as a decorated member of the U.S. Marine Corps. “She has natural talent,” he said. “She doesn’t have any bad habits. She just doesn’t miss.” Sorahan didn’t miss much last year when she finished second in the 2021 yard individual handicap division at the Cornhusker Trapshoot. On that night back in the fourth grade, Sorahan won in a drawing a membership into the Ducks Unlimited Green Wings program for youth shooters. That’s when Wiese took her under his wing. Sorahan didn’t care that there were few girls her age shooting. “It’s something a lot of girls didn’t do at the time, so it was something, like the boys, I could do,” she said. Veteran Outdoors’ Sophomore Season to Debut on Sportsman Channel “It’s not about winning; it’s about shooting against people and making them think they have to be better than you.” Sorahan has a lifetime of trapshooting to look forward to now. “That’s another reason that I like to shoot trap,” she said. “You can’t play basketball your whole life, but you can shoot your whole life.” And at least two more Cornhusker Trapshoots. “Boys and girls of all ages are taking up shooting sports as a hobby,” Shoot Director Terry Brentzel said. “It is getting easier to do that, too, because there are so many opportunities available to get started. $100,000 in NSSF Grants for Local Boy Scouts Councils $100,000 in NSSF Grants for Local Boy Scouts Councils

The organization, founded in 2006, began presenting recreational opportunities to veterans to assist in their mental and physical wellbeing. Wes Higgins, a U.S. Army veteran and co-founder of VO, said the idea came from the usual talk he and his soldiers shared about better times upon their return home. “We all made promises to get together when we made it back,” said Higgins. ”Some guys got hurt and a few didn’t make it, so we just wanted to honor them by continuing the freedoms we fought for.” Higgins and Cody Hirt, another co-founder of VO, witnessed the effects of the outings and began finding more injured veterans to benefit. The inherent qualities of outdoor recreation and the camaraderie found on the first trips proved to be the catalyst for the next 5 years.

National Shooting Sports Foundation NEWTOWN, Conn --(Ammoland.com)- Boy Scouts and their troop leaders, who are known for being resourceful, will easily recognize the great opportunity provided by the National Shooting Sports Foundation and its new $100,000 challenge grant that encourages shooting sports programs at local Boy Scouts of America Councils.

The series was picked up by TSC in early 2011 for summer programming beginning Monday night, 7:30 CST. The series’ diversity as an outdoors show and its patriotic appeal give it the potential to relate to a large viewing audience. “These adventures are tailored to individual veterans and their families,” said Hirt. “Friends and family submit them and tell us what the veteran’s dream adventure is and we work to make it happen. We also provide a platform for them to tell their stories in their own words.”

The challenge grants by NSSF, the trade association for the firearms, ammunition, hunting and shooting sports industry, are available to qualifying BSA Councils that plan to strengthen and increase their activities in the shooting sports. Such programs teach Scouts marksmanship skills, firearm and range safety, teamwork and fundraising.

Veterans are fully outfitted by donations and sponsorships by generous individuals, companies and organizations. Selected guests are set up to be surprised at an unassuming time: baseball games, family gatherings and school Christmas pageants; to name a few.

“NSSF is taking its long-standing partnership with Boy Scouts of America to a new level with this challenge grant,” said Chris Dolnack, NSSF’s senior vice president and chief marketing officer.

Catalina, AZ --(Ammoland.com)- Late in the evening of Friday, April 29, 2011, Governor Brewer vetoed SB 1201, the AzCDL-requested bill that would have required state or local government offices wanting to ban firearms to provide security measures that ensure no one is capable of bringing in a firearm without detection.

Please print and complete both pages, then either fax to (804) 785-2719 or mail to:

The Governor’s veto means that for at least another year, all a state or local government office needs to do to disarm the law-abiding is to put up a “No Firearms” sign. Meanwhile armed criminals can continue to enter these facilities undetected.

So……. What’s up with the University of Kentucky? The answer is that it’s probably not much different from many Leftleaning universities. After all, Virginia Tech fought hard and successfully to keep guns off its campus – nearly a year, to the day, before a crazed gunman killed 31 people on that campus. Mitchell appealed a ruling from Fayette Circuit Court Judge Pamela Goodwine, who dismissed his suit against the University of Kentucky because its anti-gun animus “was not a violation of public policy.”

Antler Hunters Should Note Noon Opening on Wildlife Management Areas

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks MALTA, Mont. --(Ammoland.com)- Antler hunters planning to head to west-central Montana Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) on opening day this spring should note a new opening time of noon.

MAY 02, 2011 03:38P.M. Antler Hunters Should Note Noon Opening on Wildlife Management Areas

There are three wildlife management areas in west-central Montana that are antler-hunting destinations with regularly scheduled openings on May 15: Blackfoot-Clearwater near Seeley Lake, Threemile in the Bitterroot Valley and Spotted Dog near Garrison. Some of these WMAs have traditionally opened at midnight on May 15, but the FWP Commission recently enacted regulations that require all Montana WMAs with winter closures to reopen at noon to help with consistency and public safety. Dave Dziak, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Region 2 WMA manager, noted that even after these areas open, some roads are likely to remain closed until muddy road conditions improve. Some Montana WMAs are open year-round, but many are closed during the winter months to protect wildlife from disturbance on their winter range. In addition to these three antler-hunting destinations, several other wildlife management areas in west-central Montana and many others across the state do not open until noon on May 15.

Antler Hunters Should Note Noon Opening on Wildlife Management Areas

Please check with your local FWP office or FWP’s website at fwp.mt.gov and look under “Habitat” and then “Wildlife Management Areas” for specific opening dates. Tags: Montana, Shed Antlers, WMU

Rains Threaten DPMS-Bushnell Blue Ridge Mountain 3-Gun

Last year’s Blue Ridge Mountain was also shortened due to inclement weather, to the point no winners were declared.

MAY 02, 2011 03:30P.M.

However, the entire field had shot at least eight of ten stages this year, so scores were normalized and it was U.S. AMU’s Daniel Horner that emerged for the overall and Tactical Optics victory. For Horner, the win comes on the heels of a 2nd place finish at Superstition. The Blue Ridge win, a nearly 90-point victory over eight stages, emphatically stated that Horner (770.5103) is the most dominating shooter in the sport on natural terrain courses of fire, and possibly any type of stage design.

Rains Threaten DPMS-Bushnell Blue Ridge Mountain 3-Gun

Remington’s Robby Johnson (683.9144) took second in Tactical Optics, followed by Noveske’s Rob Romero (673.5116), Rustin Bernskoetter (662.9975) and Caspian’s Bruce Piatt (647.1356). In Open, Clint Upchurch continued his remarkable run, winning his fourth consecutive division title by holding off a strong performance by SureFire’s Mike Voigt (742.8257). While Voigt won four of the eight stages, a slip on stage two’s long-range rifle steel arguably decided the match, as Upchurch’s lead on stage two mirrored his overall point lead over Voigt. DPMS’ James Darst (701.1839) narrowly edged out Don Bednorz (694.4393), while Team Rockcastle’s Tony Holmes (675.4203) took fifth.

U.S. AMU’s Daniel Horner that emerged for the overall and Tactical Optics victory.

In Tactical Irons, Kelly Neal (761.7459) picked up his 2nd consecutive division win by a comfortable margin. James Casanova (702.677) placed second, followed by Brian McKibben (693.6945), Hornady’s Jeff Cramblit (690.4002) and Spike Tactical’s Cameron Thompson (596.9331). Heavy Metal saw an interesting battle as SureFire’s Barry Dueck (782.3063) jumped divisions from Heavy Metal Optics (not recognized at Blue Ridge) and cruised to his first division win since last Fall’s Ozark match. Upstart Bryan Ray (693.0936) placed second, followed by Joe Satterfield (663.663), Maurice Griffin (649.8307) and J.J. Johnson (614.9773). Horner’s win will vault the Army shooter up the 3GN leader board from 17th place all the way to 2nd behind Upchurch, who remains the only competitor with a perfect score of 300. However, with Horner’s second win, it seems only a matter of time before he joins Upchurch atop the 3GN standings.

3 Gun Nation PARK CITY, Kent. --(Ammoland.com)- Like Yogi Berra so famously said, “It’s like déjà vu all over again.” Kentucky’s month-long deluge of severe thunderstorms and torrential rains left its final mark on the 2011 DPMS-Bushnell Blue Ridge Mountain 3-Gun at the Rockcastle Shooting Center here Sunday, as the final two stages were scrapped due to inclement weather.

The participants enjoyed two days of hunting and fishing on the beautiful 8000-acre property owned by Mississippi Commissioner Billy DeViney; and two of the ladies ended up taking a bird. After harvesting her first ever turkey, Smith, an amputee who’s partially blind, said, “Hunting and taking this bird made me feel confident and powerful. I feel if I can do this, I can do anything.” Professional Outdoor Media Association

Calahan, who’s partially paralyzed, insisted on going after her gobbler on foot. She even climbed what she claimed were “two of the biggest hills in Mississippi” to get the job done.

Johnstown, PA -(Ammoland.com)- The Professional Outdoor Media Association (POMA) announced the election of Tony Bynum of East Glacier Park, Mont., Doug Gilmer of Bristow, Va., and Pete Brownell of Montezuma, Iowa, to its board of directors. Bynum and Gilmer were elected as Media Member directors, while Brownell was elected as the Corporate Partner director. The trio will serve three-year terms beginning in August 2011.

“I began hunting a couple of years ago with the Paralyzed Veterans of America Organization,” Calahan says. “I realized through hunting that I don’t have to be stuck inside. I can do things. It’s a great feeling.” Arnold, an incomplete quadriplegic, says hunting has opened up another world for her. Although she didn’t get a bird, Arnold says, “I was thrilled to witness Leslie and Kate’s excitement at getting a bird.”

“Bynum, Gilmer and Brownell bring POMA a wide range of expertise garnered during their years as outdoor industry journalists and business professionals,” said Bill Miller, POMA chairman. “We congratulate them and thank them for their service to the organization.”

Arnold was the only lady to catch a fish during their afternoon fishing trips for bream and bass.

Bynum, is a full-time freelance outdoor commercial, wildlife, and nature photographer from Montana. His images have appeared on the covers of many major traditional outdoor magazines. In 2010, he also was selected to produce commercial advertising images for the State Of Montana’s Office of Tourism. He has worked or traveled to all of the lower 48 states, Mexico, and much of Canada. He writes regularly for his blog and is very active in social media and new media communications and marketing

Gardner says, “The 2nd Celebration Hunt was a life changing experience for all of us. I look forward to future hunts and to meeting more remarkable women who’ve given so much of themselves to protect the freedom that we often take for granted.”

Brownell is the president of Brownell’s, the largest supplier of firearms and gunsmithing parts and accessories in the world. He is the third generation of Brownells to lead the company. He grew up in the industry and worked hundreds of part-time hours at Brownells, from junior high through college. He officially joined the company in 1998, and spent nine years as vice president. He also sits on the board of directors of several other outdoor industry organization boards including the National Rifle Association, National Association of Sporting Goods Wholesalers and others.

Gilmer’s communications career began in the law enforcement and tactical areas when he filmed several episodes of “World’s Wildest Police Chases,” “Police Crashes,” and “Moment of Impact” with Sheriff John Bunnell. This led to crafting articles for law enforcement and professional publications and now a wide range of traditional outdoor sports publications. He is contributing editor of Christian Sportsman magazine, a frequent contributor to a number of online publications and blogs and works in outdoor TV and digital video. Gilmer also teaches outdoor communications at Liberty University.

Virginia Citizens Defense League Covington VA --(Ammoland.com)- I have been doing a bit of research on Bloomberg’s group, Mayors Against Illegal Guns. They claim a membership of 593 mayors. Of these, 399 (over 67%!) are in only four states – New Jersey (40), New York (108), Ohio (71) and Pennsylvania(180). If you throw in California (21) and Florida (36), they account for 456 (over 76%) of their alleged membership.

Tags: Brownells, POMA, Professional Outdoor Media Association, Shooting Industry News

There are approximately 8,291 mayors, nationally, of localities with over 30,000 citizens. Even disregarding the fact that a fair number of Bloomberg’s group are not even included in that count, due to small constituencies, this means that fewer than 7.2% of the nation’s mayors agree with his goals and methods enough to allow themselves to be counted among his supporters.

MAY 02, 2011 10:05A.M. Most importantly, the book drives a long and rusty nail into the coffin lid of the gun control movement. For over a decade, Gun Facts has been dedicated to debunking gun control myths. Shooting The Bull is designed to eradicate the credibility of the Brady Campaign, the Violence Policy Center, Michael Bloomberg and all the other operatives, tying their activities back to Barack Obama’s Joyce Foundation (the gun control industry would go broke in a month without the Joyce’s). Be sure to send/lend a copy to anyone who isn’t sure about gun control … this book will shift them to our side.

Washington, DC --(Ammoland.com)- Shooting The Bull, my new book that eviscerates the gun control industry, is now released and available (both print and electronic formats). Foremost, Shooting The Bull is a field guide to identifying political lies in real-time. Using the gun control industry as my case study throughout, I show how political misinformation is formulated and spread. Even if you are an ardent gun rights activist, you likely missed how the gun control industry manufactures propaganda and why it has been effective. Seeing case study examples – and the resulting Catalog of Canards, a list of misinformation tactics – will show how you may have been mislead about other political issues.

Drop by any of the retailers listed above and get your copy today. If you represent an organization, I can arrange for you to get the wholesalers’ discount for bulk orders (twenty or more copies – email me at guy@GunFacts.info). Yours in Liberty Guy Smith About: Gun Facts offers a free e-book that debunks common myths about gun control. It is intended as a reference guide for journalists, activists, politicians, and other people interested in restoring honesty to the debate about guns, crime, and the 2nd Amendment.
