21 Findings About Modern Sporting Rifle Owners

With so many MSRs purchased during that period, the National Shooting Sports Foundation, the trade association for the firearms and ammunition industry, wanted to learn more about owners’ use and attitudes related to these firearms.

MAY 16, 2011 08:51P.M. 21 Findings About Modern Sporting Rifle Owners Users Are Passionate about their AR-style Firearms.

A survey conducted in 2010 on behalf of NSSF by Sports Marketing Surveys has been compiled into the NSSF Modern Sporting Rifle (MSR) Comprehensive Consumer Report. The complete survey and a description of the methodology used are available at www.nssf.org/MSR/facts.cfm. “The findings give NSSF a baseline for future research into the ownership and use of these popular sporting firearms,” said Jim Curcuruto, NSSF’s director of industry research and analysis. “Our goal was to learn more about this category, and we certainly did.” Included in the survey findings are these 21 fascinating facts about owners of modern sporting rifles who responded to the survey:

Modern Sporting Rifle

• 60 percent of MSR owners that responded to the study own multiple MSRs, with the average owned being 2.6. • 30 percent of all MSR owners purchased their first rifle in 2009 or 2010. • 99 percent of all MSR owners owned some type of firearm prior to their first MSR purchase. • 9 out of 10 owned a handgun prior to acquiring their first MSR, and 34 percent of those under age 35 owned a paintball gun before owning their MSR. National Shooting Sports Foundation

• Nearly half (44 percent) of MSR owners are current or former military or law enforcement members.

NEWTOWN, Conn --(Ammoland.com)- Owners of modern sporting rifles (MSR) –those rifles based on the AR platform– are among the most passionate gun owners.

• 51 percent of MSR owners have a shooting-range membership. • 8 out of every 10 MSR owners purchased their MSR new.

Most shoot their rifles often and wish they had time to shoot them even more. Most use them for target shooting. Most own multiple modern sporting rifles. Most enjoy accessorizing them.

• 39 percent of all MSR owners purchased their most recent MSR at an independent retail store, with the average purchase price being $1,083.

Given these and other insights into ownership, it’s no wonder MSRs were among the hottest sellers during the firearms sales boom from late 2008

• 3 out of every 4 MSRs most recently purchased were chambered in

Gun owners who want to be accurately informed on the subject can learn more at www.nssf.org/msr.

• MSR owners consider accuracy and reliability to be the 2 most important things to consider when buying a MSR.

About NSSF The National Shooting Sports Foundation is the trade association for the firearms industry. Its mission is to promote, protect and preserve hunting and the shooting sports. Formed in 1961, NSSF has a membership of more than 6,000 manufacturers, distributors, firearms retailers, shooting ranges, sportsmen’s organizations and publishers. For more information, log on to www.nssf.org.

• 84 percent of MSR owners have at least 1 accessory on their rifle, and they spend an average of $436 on after-market accessories and customization. • 71 percent of MSR owners use a scope or red-dot as their primary optic. Older owners prefer scopes; younger owners prefer red-dot optics.

NSSF is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2011. Learn about the Foundation’s history at www.nssf.org/50.

• One-third of MSR owners use a 30-plus round magazine most often in their MSR.

• The 3 most-owned accessories were a rifle sling (81 percent), soft carrying case (70 percent) and mounted rifle scope (68 percent). AMMOLAND.COM SHOOTING SPORTS NEWS • 25 percent of those who own 3 or more MSRs describe their MSRs as heavily accessorized (4-plus accessories).

• Recreational target shooting (8.9 out of 10) was the No. 1-rated reason for owning a MSR in terms of importance. Home defense was next (7.7/10), followed by collecting (6.28/10) and varmint hunting (6.23/10).

MAY 16, 2011 08:42P.M. Sportsman Spotlight – Thomas Pigeon of Canada in the Rough

• 95 percent of owners said they have used their MSRs in the last 12 months, and 29 percent of owners shoot their MSRs more than once per month. • 25 percent of owners shot more than 1,000 rounds out of their MSR in the last 12 months. Sportsman Channel • 8 out of 10 owners feel they have not been able to shoot their MSR as much as they would like in the last 12 months.

New Berlin, Wis. --(Ammoland.com)- Q: How did Canada in the Rough get started in the TV industry and evolve to be what it is today?

• Not having enough free time and the cost of ammo are the 2 main issues preventing MSR owners from shooting as much as they would like.

Thomas: “Thomas Pigeon, the founder and creator of the show, had a dream to showcase the incredible Canadian wilderness and hunting opportunities in the form of a television documentary series. He then started the journey that is so successfully continuing today in showing one of the world’s last frontiers in its purest form.”

• The typical MSR owner is 35-plus years old, married and has some college education. NSSF has led the way in educating sportsmen and the public about modern sporting rifles. These AR-style rifles are sometimes incorrectly referred to as assault rifles or assault weapons. They are not. (The AR stands for ArmaLite, the company that developed the rifle in the 1950s.)

Q: How do you like to spend your time when you are not hunting? Thomas: “The entire crew loves to be with family. Thomas has a home farm with his family including two daughters. He loves to work on the farm doing chores including raising animals. But one of his true passions is dog work.”

The rifles do resemble military firearms such as the M4, but the similarities are cosmetic only. The AR-style rifle functions like other semi-automatic sporting firearms, firing one round with each pull of the trigger. Since the 19th century, civilian sporting rifles have evolved from their military predecessors, and the modern sporting rifle follows that tradition.

Q: What were the worst conditions you ever hunted under? Thomas: “The worst conditions ever were during Thomas’s arctic muskox hunt. With temperatures and wind chills reaching a staggering negative 60 degrees Celsius. The outcome was still excellent only far

“Mossy Oak is supporting two very important initiatives on behalf of duck hunters. Both projects are critical in arresting the decline in waterfowl hunter numbers and participation and we are very grateful for this support,” notes Delta’s Senior V.P. John Devney.

Q: What is your favorite meal including wild game? Any good recipes? Thomas: “A fresh BBQ moose steak is one of the finest wild meats on the planet. Marinated in an Italian salad dressing for 24-48 hours, medium rare with a side of BBQ potatoes and asparagus! Mmmmmmmmmmm! ” Q: What are you most proud of or what is your biggest accomplishment? Thomas: “The entire crew feels their own greatest accomplishments are their families. Having families with strong values and an incredible desire to enjoy life, having fun and being good people makes each of us feel very proud and successful.” Show times for Canada in the Rough can be found here. “Today’s announcement also makes it clear that even after SAF’s Supreme Court victory last year in the McDonald case against Chicago, the firearms community still has enormous challenges,” Gottlieb stated. “We’ve been so focused on filing federal cases in New Jersey, North Carolina, New York, Maryland, Washington, D.C. and elsewhere, and just this last week in Virginia and Illinois - where the NRA has also filed a subsequent lawsuit - that realizing someone we beat in 1995 had to be reminded of their obligations at this late date is not only surprising, it’s kind of annoying.

SAF Thanks NRA, CRPA For Renewed Lawsuit To Enforce Its 1994 Court Victory MAY 16, 2011 08:21P.M. SAF Thanks NRA, CRPA For Renewed Lawsuit To Enforce Its 1994 Court Victory

“SAF is determined to win back firearms rights one lawsuit at a time, if necessary,” he concluded. “Evidently, it is sometimes necessary to do it over and over again.” The Second Amendment Foundation (www.saf.org) is the nation’s oldest and largest tax-exempt education, research, publishing and legal action group focusing on the Constitutional right and heritage to privately own and possess firearms. Founded in 1974, The Foundation has grown to more than 650,000 members and supporters and conducts many programs designed to better inform the public about the consequences of gun control. SAF has previously funded successful firearms-related suits against the cities of Los Angeles; New Haven, CT; and San Francisco on behalf of American gun owners, a lawsuit against the cities suing gun makers and an amicus brief and fund for the Emerson case holding the Second Amendment as an individual right.

Second Amendment Foundation BELLEVUE, WA --(Ammoland.com)- The Second Amendment Foundation today publicly thanked the National Rifle Association and California Rifle & Pistol Association for sponsoring two new legal actions that seek enforcement of a case SAF won in 1994 against the City of Los Angeles regarding concealed carry permits.

The case, Lake v City of Los Angeles, resulted in a judgment against the city, which had to issue a check to SAF on April 11, 1995 for the amount of $50,000. And, in the case of Assenza v City of Los Angeles the Second Amendment Foundation was given the right to nominate future appointments to the created advisory review panel for contested concealed carry license applications.

“Frankly,” he continued, “it is disappointing, though not surprising, that the LAPD has fallen back on its old habits, as CRPA noted this morning when it announced the two legal actions. I am actually delighted that our friends at CRPA and NRA have jumped into this. It’s been our pleasure to work with both organizations in the past, and since we won the original case 16 years ago, this ought to be a legal slam-dunk.” “The fact that new actions had to be initiated at all,” Gottlieb observed, “demonstrates the necessity for continued vigilance against anti-gun bureaucracies. How many times does a court have to issue an order before a government entity gets the message?

abiding citizens to keep and bear arms as guaranteed by the Second and Fourteenth Amendments to the United States Constitution and are thus null and void. Cox concluded: “In its historic Heller and McDonald decisions, the U.S. Supreme Court made clear that the Second Amendment protects a fundamental, individual right to keep and bear arms. Mary Shepard’s story highlights the need for law-abiding citizens to be able to fully exercise their Second Amendment rights. Whether through the legislature or through the courts, we won’t rest until that happens.” The NRA has also filed or supported the following cases to preserve Second Amendment freedoms across the United States since the historic Heller and McDonald rulings, and expects to file more in the coming months: National Rifle Association • Benson v. City of Chicago, challenging Chicago’s unconstitutionally burdensome handgun restrictions;

FAIRFAX, Va. --(Ammoland.com)- The National Rifle Association is funding and supporting a lawsuit that challenges the constitutionality of Illinois’ complete and total ban on carrying firearms for self-defense outside the home.

• Heller v. District of Columbia (Heller II), challenging Washington, D.C.’s overly restrictive firearm registration requirements and ban on commonly owned rifles;

The case, filed today in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Illinois, is Shepard v. Madigan. The lead plaintiff is church treasurer Mary Shepard; joining her is the Illinois State Rifle Association, the NRA’s state affiliate.

• Jackson v. City of San Francisco, challenging that city’s gun storage and ammunition regulations; • Jane Doe v. Wilmington Housing Authority, challenging prohibitions on firearms ownership in Delaware public housing;

Mary Shepard is an Illinois resident and a trained gun owner with no criminal record, who is licensed to carry a concealed handgun in two other states. Because Illinois remains the only state that completely prohibits all law-abiding citizens from carrying firearms for self-defense outside the home, Mary Shepard also became a crime victim. While working as the treasurer of her church, Mrs. Shepard and an 83-year-old co-worker were viciously attacked and beaten by a six-foot-three-inch, 245-pound man with a violent past and a criminal record. Mrs. Shepard and her co-worker were lucky to survive, as each of them suffered major injuries to the head, neck and upper body. Mrs. Shepard’s injuries required extensive surgery and physical therapy.

• Jennings v. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, challenging the federal law that prohibits law-abiding adults between the ages of 18-20 from buying handguns from licensed dealers; • NRA v. McCraw, challenging Texas’ law that bans issuance of handgun carry permits to 18-20 year old adults; and • Peruta v. City of San Diego, challenging that city’s refusal to issue handgun carry permits to law-abiding applicants.

“Mary Shepard isn’t just a victim of the violent criminal who attacked her,” said Chris W. Cox, executive director of NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action. “She is also a victim of anti self-defense activists in the Illinois legislature who have consistently refused to recognize that good people have the right to protect themselves when they go about their everyday business. We’re pleased that the legislature has come closer this year than ever before to changing the law, but close isn’t good enough for Mary Shepard and the thousands of other Illinois residents who are prohibited by statute from defending themselves outside the home.”

About: Established in 1871, the National Rifle Association is America’s oldest civil rights and sportsmen’s group. Four million members strong, NRA continues its mission to uphold Second Amendment rights and to advocate enforcement of existing laws against violent offenders to reduce crime. Illinois General Assembly Squanders Opportunity to Improve Gun Buyer Background Check System

In a nut shell, the gun control movement’s efforts the kill HB148 have ensured that Illinois remains one of the most dangerous places to live in the United States. In addition to causing the loss of $40 million for better background checks, the gun control movement is now responsible for Illinois having to shell out millions in taxpayer dollars to pay legal bills related to the SAF and NRA/ISRA lawsuits. Once again, the extremist views of the gun control movement are costing the good people of Illinois dearly.

MAY 16, 2011 04:19P.M. Illinois General Assembly Squanders Opportunity to Improve Gun Buyer Background Check System

“The ISRA is very excited about being a plaintiff in the NRA/ISRA lawsuit,” commented ISRA Executive Director, Richard Pearson. “This lawsuit defines the cutting edge of one of the most important questions of the day. That is, does the state have the right to decide who is worth defending and who is not?” “The fact that two lawsuits have been filed against the State of Illinois this week is proof-positive that this issue is not going to go away,” continued Pearson. “The behind the scenes political gamesmanship that resulted in the scuttling of HB148 has not diminished the resolve of the good people of Illinois. Whether it is in the courts, in the legislature, or at the ballot box, we will relentlessly push forward until the citizen’s right to self defense is restored in Illinois.” Illinois State Rifle Association About: The ISRA is the state’s leading advocate of safe, lawful and responsible firearms ownership. Illinois --(Ammoland.com)- The following was released today by the Illinois State Rifle Association (ISRA): Illinois gun control advocates and their allies in the General Assembly delivered a “triple-whammy” against public safety recently when they sabotaged passage of HB148.

Under the provisions of HB148, well-trained, well-qualified Illinois citizens would be permitted to carry defensive firearms to protect themselves and their families from violent criminals. At the same time, HB148 would have provided upwards of $40 million in permit fees to the Illinois State Police to pay for upgrades to the state’s antiquated gun buyer background check system. But, thanks to the short-sighted efforts of the gun control movement and its friends in the Illinois House, tens of thousands of law-abiding Illinois citizens will continue to suffer at the hands of murderers, robbers and rapists because they cannot lawfully defend themselves. Likewise, the gun control movement can take credit for saddling the state police with a background check system based on software developed in 1959. Rounding out the triple whammy-against the citizens of Illinois is the fact that the actions of gun control advocates are to blame for a pair of

Wisconsin Personal Protection Act Heard in Committees & Hundreds Show Their Support

Consistent with standard practice, the committees did not vote on these bills. They will have executive sessions in the near future to do this and consider any potential amendments.

It is critical that you contact your state Senator AND state Representative and request that they support the PPA without any amendments that further restrict your right to self-defense or cause more difficulty in obtaining a license. Specifically, ask that they oppose a training mandate. As described here, this mandate will discriminate against those who most need personal protection — low income minorities living in high crime urban areas.

National Rifle Association Wisconsin --(Ammoland.com)- Making it evident that they are tired of being denied the right to carry a concealed handgun for self-defense, hundreds of Badger State residents attended hearings Thursday, May 12 on the Personal Protection Act (PPA) in the Senate and Assembly Judiciary Committees.

The Senate Judiciary Committee met in Wausau and heard both Senate Bill 93, the “permitless carry” bill, and Senate Bill 90, the “shall-issue” license bill. The NRA testified in support of both bills. If each bill becomes law, citizens will have the option of carrying under either of the two systems, as described in the bill summary here.

The Assembly Criminal Justice Committee met in Madison and heard Assembly Bill 126, the companion to SB 90. Some of the most compelling testimony of the day came from Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke. He described how he was an opponent of concealed carry until he began to see the effects of a violent crime wave on the citizens of his county. He realized that citizens really are the first line of defense against violent predators because his officers could not be everywhere all of the time. Sheriff Clarke asked the committee to allow citizens the most efficient and effective means of protecting themselves – a concealed handgun.

Two bills introduced in the 2011 legislative session allow Wisconsinites to carry concealed weapons for personal protection. Senate Bill 93, known as “permitless carry” would simply eliminate the current prohibition against law-abiding citizens carrying concealed firearms. Many citizens already carry openly and this will allow them to conceal their firearms. It also eliminates the “cased and unloaded” requirement for handguns in motor vehicles. State Senator Pam Galloway (RWausau) has introduced SB 93 and there is currently no companion bill in the Assembly. This fact does not preclude the bill from being passed by the Senate and then the Assembly to ultimately become law.

MAY 16, 2011 03:57P.M. Wisconsin Gun Owner Political News By Jeff Nass

The second is Assembly Bill 126/Senate Bill 90, a “shall issue” carry license bill that allows Wisconsinites to obtain a license from the state Department of Justice in order to carry a concealed weapon. This license bill offers some additional benefits. These include the ability to use the license to carry a concealed weapon in many other states while traveling and the ability to carry concealed weapons in school zones (1000-foot area surrounding school grounds) within the state. These zones are prolific and it is virtually impossible to navigate populated areas without entering them while engaging in routine activities. The federal penalty for a school zone violation is up to five years in prison and a fine. State Representative Jeffrey Mursau (R-Crivitz) and state Senator Pam Galloway (R-Wausau) are the sponsors of this legislation, respectively.

Wisconsin Firearm Owners, Ranges, Clubs & Educators Wisconsin --(Ammoland.com)- Last weeks NRA/ILA/FORCE events were a great success. All three events were standing room only (including outside the room). Eau Claire and Richfield both had over 200 attendees and Wausau, even with the hearing from Noon to 6 PM, had 175 people, overflowing the room. We are blessed with four great NRA representatives, National Board of Director Buster Bachhuber, Scott Taetsch our NRA Field Representative, Brent Gardner the Grass Roots Coordinator and Darren LaSorte our ILA Representative.

Please contact your state legislators to ask that they support these bills and request that they oppose any amendments that restrict your ability to defend yourself or place unnecessary hurdles in the process required to obtain a concealed weapons license. Too many legislators are acting as if there are not 48 other states with such concealed carry laws and that

We are strongly pushing both Permitless Carry and Shall issue.

Both work extremely well together. For those that do not need a permit to carry out of state and do not travel within 1000 feet of any school, permitless carry will work great. For those that do travel out of state or come within 1000 feet of a school, the permit carry will work well. It is important to note that it looks like Michigan will recognize our permit as written. This is important as Michigan requires a permit from the state of your residence. After a long hard fight (10 years) It looks like a bill will pass in June.

EXETER, NH --(Ammoland.com)- Max Michel, Jr., captain of Team SIG SAUER, brought home a second-place finish in the International Practical Shooting Confederation’s Med Cup in Cheval-Blanc, France, over the weekend.

To the Ways and Means Committee, RE: House Bill 2791Dear Committee Member, HB 2791 would eliminate the costly and redundant use of the Oregon State Police to conduct background checks for firearms purchases.

With 24 stages shot over three days, the Med Cup is twice as long as most U.S. shooting matches. This required Michel to adjust his normal shooting strategy, which was a challenge.

The National Instant Check System, used by most states for background checks, is more efficient and is already being paid for by our tax dollars. It makes no sense to ask Oregonians to pay twice for the same check.

“I made some bad tactical decisions on Day Two,” Michel said. “But I learned quite a bit that should help me improve my training regimen for the ISPC World Shoot in October.”

refresher for seasoned hunters as well as a prep course for new hunters preparing to take the Hunter Education Course.

FERNANDINA BEACH, Fl --(Ammoland.com)- An analysis conducted by Southwick Associates and Andrew Loftus Consulting for the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies found that federal excise taxes collected on the sale of hunting and shooting equipment represented an approximate 1,100 percent annual return on investment (ROI) to manufacturers between 1970 to 2006 and taxes collected on sport fishing equipment generated a striking annual ROI of 2,157 percent between 1955 and 2006.

Because treestand accidents remain the number-one cause of hunting related incidents each year, every hunter should review this simple online course before heading out to the woods. Upon completion of the course, you can continue on to www.huntercourse.com to take the full Hunter Education Exam. “At Hunter Safety System, we strongly encourage every company to make a stand for treestand safety,” said Michael Wydner, HSS national sales manager. “That is why we are offering this course free to anyone that would like to post it on their website. We all need to work together to make sure our hunters are safe each and every time they enter the woods for a hunt.”

“How many tax models in our country today can show an $11 to $21 return to the company on every dollar spent” The ROIs in the new report “The Benefits to Business from Hunting and Fishing Excise Taxes” were determined by comparing the amount of excise taxes collected annually to the amount of purchases made annually by sportsmen during the respective timeframes. By law, the excise taxes only can be used to maintain fish and wildlife populations, provide public access and support programs that directly benefit hunters, shooting sports enthusiasts and anglers.

For details on how to post the HSS online Treestand Safety Course on your website, contact Wydner at michael@hssvest.com or call 877-2963528 for details.

On average, the hunting- and shooting sports-related industry paid $251 million in excise taxes, but made $3.1 billion in revenue through sportsmen purchases each year from 1970 to 2006. From 1955 to 2006, the sport fishing industry on average contributed $110 million in annual tax payments/import duties, but generated $2.3 billion in annual taxable equipment sales.

“The conservation community has known for a long time that the excise taxes provide a vital funding source for state agencies and have enhanced fish and wildlife populations,” said Rob Southwick, president of Southwick Associates. “This ROI study, for the first time, demonstrates the substantial bottom line financial benefit of these taxes back to those companies that write the checks.”

According to the ROI study, outdoor industry excise taxes have helped to: • Increase Atlantic striped bass populations by nearly 500 percent since 1982; leading to a 1,000 percent increase in the number of angler trips and generating more than $68 million on average per year in related fishing equipment sales. • Improve fishing in the Great Lakes from nearly nonexistent in the 1950s to world class for salmon, trout, walleye and yellow perch; generating more than $2 billion in retail sales and supporting more than 58,000 jobs. • Turn Wyoming into one of the top destinations for elk hunting with 23,000 harvested annually when in 1937 only a few hunts were permitted. “Everyone who has a stake in hunting or fishing—from hunters and anglers who enjoy the resource to manufacturers who make the products—benefits,” said Ron Regan, executive director of the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies. “State fish and wildlife agencies particularly benefit as these funds represent the single largest, dedicated funding source for science-based conservation programs.” The report concludes that a decrease or elimination of outdoor industry excise tax funding would reduce long-term investment into the foundation of the sport-fishing and hunting—fish and game populations, public access and recruitment of future customers. Such a circumstance would, in turn, cause a downward spiral in participation, which would further diminish consumer spending on the equipment produced by manufacturers. “The Benefits to Business from Hunting and Fishing Excise Taxes” report along with full reports that include technical details, are available for free at www.SouthwickAssociates.com/excisetaxROI.
