BANLANCE Project Time: 2013.10-2014.01 Work Category: Teamwork Cooperator: Museo Nazionale della Scienza e della Tecnologia Exhibition: Merging Exhibition during Milan Design Week
BRIEF We cooperated with MUST shop belonging to the National Museum of Science and Technology in Milan. In addition to a museum gift store, MUST Shop is a cultural concept store and always following the education mission. The second main concern is that finding nice and innovative items focusing on or connected to environment oriented issues and to eco-sustainability.
RESEARCH Starting from the brief, we chose the topic “learning by doing and the target customers from 6 to 9. Then we have carried out several times of on-field research and desk research. By analyzing daily routines of children from 6-9(washing, eating and sleeping), we have the concept of A DAILY OBJECT serving the purpose of FOOD EDUCATION.
Products in MUST shop.

Food Education & Daily Object
SCENARIO According to the concept, we developed several scenarios about a balanced diet and made prototypes to test if the scenario works or not. After an iterative process, we refined our scenario and final shape.
SCENARIO 1
In scenario 1, we used magnetic material to create our persona and the food icons. When you eat a sufficient amount of food, the man will present a food square, like the picture in the middle. When the food icons exceed the boundary of the square, that implies you eat too much.
SCENARIO 2
You did not eat enough food
You eat too much food
sweet fat dairy grain fruit&vegetable
In scenario 2, we decided to use wood for the drop shaped strut and pvc transparent for the cilinder. We have 5 cilinders for 5 categories of food, according to the food pyramid. For the cilinder just cut and put a cork at both ends. And in the cylinder we want to put something to represent the food category. For example, we put some flour to represent the grain.
SCENARIO 3
FRUIT AND VEGETABLE
Green: fruits and vegetables 5 pieces per day
PROTEINS
Orange: proteins 1 piece per day
DAIRY
light blue: dairy 3 pieces per day
SWEETS
Pink: sweets 1 piece per day
CHARBOIDRATES
Yellow: carbohidrates 4 pieces per day
Our aim in this scenario is that to become stronge and invincible as a real superhero you have to eat in an health and balanced way everyday. We divided this “superhero” into several parts and each part represents one kind of food. If you eat too much, you stuff too much plastic into the body, the “superhero” will obviously become fat.
SCENARIO 4 This scenario we call it equilibrium. We discovered two prototypes of this scenario. Then mainly idea is that you put what kind of food what you ate on it. Only if you eat correctly, it will become balanced. At last we selected the second prototype as the final one and detailing it.
FINAL PRODUCT We chose this as our prototype and it should be more detailed. As we have peer review with MUST shop, they advised us to redesign the identity of each category of food. More importantly, we should strengthen our theoretical foundation, like how to quantificat the food.
We made some researches on Internet and we decided to use our hands to measure the quantity of food, that means through this way the children can learn how to use their bodies in order to understand if they are eating in the correct way. We also redesign the stick and the icons hanging on the string.

SWEETS
1 portion: 2 handsfull
1 portion: 1 palm
1 portion: palm for milk thumb for chees
1 portion: 1 fist
1 portion: 1 index
Then we create a storyboard to explain how does it work: The object is hanging without any weight, in this moment the sticks are not in balance. During the day every time you eat a portion of food you hang a weight of the right type on the corrispondent stick. If you eat the right number of portion for each food group all the stcick, at the end of the day, it will be in balance. Otherwise you will notice some differences.
The final product was being exhibited in MUST shop in the National Museum of Science and Technology in Milan, also being exhibited in 2014 Milan Design Week. And you can see our video on https://vimeo.com/104835522

Insights from the interviews:
> Professional Designers disinterested, too low key. Young/Student Designers attracted by visibility.
> Owners busy, limited time to give despite enthusiasm.
> Need detailed plan to understand involvement.
CONCEPT OF SERVICE After one week’s research and interviews, we consummated our service and made it more detailed. “Hé” is a series of pop up design exhibitions hosted in unexpected spaces in Milan, for EXPO 2015. Facilitating the discovery of niche local shops, restaurants and businesses whilst creating welcoming and vibrant homes for design, giving the opportunity for young designers to be showcased

Interactive Questionnaires: In order to establish participation and interest whilst building a personal relationship, we conducted the interactive questionnaires with space owners. This allowed reconstruction of key elements to highlight their needs and preferences. This is a critical moment in our co-designing process to ensure that we had genuine stakeholders.
What Designers Expose: We asked designers to draw what they would like to showcase if they were involved We found it a useful excercise to understand what could be exposed, but not that englightening
Visualised responsibilities: We want to establish and understand what each player will be responsible for. All the responsibilities represented by 14 blocks, categorised into 4 topics -exhibition, design, money, events. The players can choose what kind of responsibility they are willing to take. This helps us to understand the balance that we need to facilitate effectively
3D Walkthrough+What if: To collectively refine system and understand everyone’ s role, we created a 3D representation of our service, where people were invited to do a run through and write down questions on blue post-its or suggestions on yellow post-its. After this, we found it effectively in highlighting issues we hadn’t considered fully.
Platform User Test: To demonstrate to owners the platform and receive feedback, we showed the owners a mock-up of the platform and discussed new refined service. We got positive feedbacks that reassured us that the updated version of our service would work from owners point of view. He DESIGN BOXES

BUSTOP+ Project Time: 2014.05.12-2014.05.16 Work Category: Teamwork One-week Workshop
RESEARCH In a metropolitan like Milan, there are nearly 2500 bus stops all over the city where people spend most of their time doing nothing except for waiting for the bus. How can we turn such a boring space into a lively city spot?

Opportunity: As one bus-stop is connected with surrounding community, why not turn it into a lively city spot to show street culture in EXPO?

Bus Stop+Local Community=?
CONCEPT This idea “BUSTOP+” is through giving the community toolkit to help them create their own “hybrid bus-stop”. In such co-creation way, they will have more social connection with each other. Meanwhile, different “hybrid bus-stops” in the city together form a new network for city identity, which is meaningful for special event, such as EXPO.

The toolkit contains three categories of cards— tool, material, web. Tool card shows how the community can build the bus stop. Material card shows what can be used in the process. Web card shows possible content on platform. This toolkit helps users co-create and engaged.
SCENARIO Scenario 1: Powerground After getting the toolkit from the organizer, Community A discuss among the members and decides to create a “power- ground bustop. Powerground can produce energy through doing exercise such as swinging. The energy is then stored in the bus stop for future charging services for others. Here, Users can see how much energy he creates through online platform and use it to offset his electricity bill. Besides, interesting competetion among communities can be held online.

Community B creates a bus stop for “home food” with toolkit. Mr. White books Tuesday as his “food day” through online platform. When he is preparing his food, he also records and uploads the video online. On Tuesday, Home food bus stop shows not only the food but also the story of Mr. White on a blackboard. Ms.Red buys one cupcake from the machine while waiting for the bus. She scans the QR code and finds the secret recipe of Mr. White. Finally, they become friends through the service.
Scenario 3: Neighbour-TED
Record Speech and upload
Neigbors watch and get inspired
Scan QRcode and “like” it CommunityC has a NeighborTED bus stop. Mr. Talent records his speech at home and uploads it on the web platform. The speech is shown on the screen in the bus stop the next day. The passengers can watch it in the bus stop or download it by scaning the QR code to watch it on the way. They get inspired by the speech and “like” it. Mr. Talent gets popular and is able to book one day to give a live speech in the bus stop. When he is giving the speech, every bus stop can broadcast his show. If passengers want to continue to listen to the speech, they can scan the QR code on the screen to watch it and comment it on the way.

DUO-FOODBOX Project Time: 2014.05.19-2014.05.23 Work Category: Teamwork Cooperator: a.b.m. Italia S.p.A. One-week Workshop
BRIEF When the KIS foodbox was placed in the shelves, it is not obvious for customers to discover the sealing of the foodbox, which is the determinant to consume. Therefore we need to redesign the foodbox, in order to make it looks more hermetic.
CONCEPT Inspiration: The lock mechanism male-female allows to see immediately if the lid is closed. It is composed by two parts that coincide between each other. Through the connection of the two elements, you can perceive the limit that make the lock system totally hermetic.
We made some prototypes to test our ideas.
PRODUCT
DUO follows the male-female concept, using coloured rubber that surrounds the edges of the box. The waves structure of the material increase the sense of closure, the material and the combination of colours make DUO a product to display. The new design has not only aesthetic, but also functional: the edges are more curved to help the opening of the lid.
HOW TO USE
Every day you can choose your favourite colours combination. Duo can be stacked without any lipping problems due to the border on the lid.
Duo is characterized by a tab on each corner of the lid. You can easly open it from every corner and you don’t need to pay attention looking for the right opening point.
The waved structure helps you to understand immediately if Duo is precisely closed.
You can carry Duo with you where you want glad to show it to your friends.
You can combine the lid with the right box following the color of the rubber stripe in the bottom part of the container.
CONTEXT OF USE
Flaunt your Duo in a picnic in the park, or when you eat with your friends on a grass. It is very functional, because it keeps your food safe, but also it can be your perfect fashion accessory for your lunch time.
Duo is perfect for the office, you can put it in your bag and use it to warm the food in the microwave oven. You can easily recognize your lunchbox because is colorful and follows your mood and your colour preference.
