FASHION NOTES FOR NOW gucci ss17
This season, we’re part of something, so get in formation. We don’t look the same but we have the same attitude. Of course, this is inspired by the focus on the ’80s, not just from the SS17 collections but a mindset, too. Live hard. Have fun. Power up. Pure ambition. Greed is good.

immermann kicked it all off at the beginning of the show season in New York, harking back to partying in underground nightclubs in Sydney during the 1980s. Kate Phelan, global creative director of Topshop, spoke about the ’80s backstage after the Topshop Unique show in London, telling us, “Everything was random. What you had was this amazing, eclectic style. Everybody looked individual. Everybody danced to everyone else’s music. Nobody looked the same. Fashion was really exciting at that moment in time.” The Parisian ’80s power woman was in full stride at Saint Laurent. Sexier. At Lanvin, she was bathed in splendour, with lingerie juxtaposed by masculine suits. A little bit mysterious. Intelligent. Off-White summed everything up in the title of Virgil Abloh’s collection: Business Woman. Breaking down preconceived ideas of what a woman should be. And so florals were inescapable, but there was toughness to it all. Balenciaga had shoulder pads and the “power shoulder” made an appearance at Céline, while chunky platform shoes in almost every collection gave a harder edge. And so we’re on a mission. Powering down those streets… Of course, athleisure is key, done brilliantly at Alexander Wang and DKNY. Dao-Yi Chow, former designer of DKNY alongside Maxwell Osborne, said, “[We were] really redefining what active and street meant and bringing them together in one collection.” Futuristic kids of the streets, stomping full speed ahead. It’s coming-of-age streetwear. Fighting for something. Rebellion. Cue Adidas. Bold, vivid hues. Dark, deep, rich colours. A contagious energy throughout the season.

Preparing for a war we know we’ll win. Not a rebirth but getting ready. Brave love. And having fun. Don’t take yourself too seriously. “No deep meaning or profound statements,” said Thom Browne of his animal-headed models. “[It was] just because it was fun. Because I wanted to.” We like his attitude. A sense of ease and quiet confidence at Paul Smith, later also seen at Off-White in slouch pants with a don’t-care attitude that we love because we don’t get told what to do. And then we went on a trip. No more in the moment, it was Alessandro Michele’s idea of phantasmagoria for Gucci. Fusing reality and fantasy in a new dimension, teleporting at full throttle. “Fashion is the most beautiful illusion you can have,” Michele tweeted before the show. That empowered woman is still at the centre at Prada. “The fear is a battle,” Miuccia Prada told us after the show. Yes, feminine, but as Mr Armani put it, “a less-rigid allure to the male figure”. What would life be without a little romance as well? Not cute, though. A dark, complex, multilayered, crafted love. Alexander McQueen, Dior. Sneaky layering at Loewe and Chanel. Nothing was as it seemed. Pushing it to the limit. Check Demna Gvasalia’s spandex bootlegging pant all-in-one at Balenciaga. Why not? This is the new attitude for this generation. No boundaries. Everything is energised and colourful in a dystopian future – Ellery and Louis Vuitton. That slightly sinister eeriness was felt at Miu Miu: imagine girls by a bright blue pool, with dark grey, ominous clouds looming. Stillness in the air. Something is lurking. The word dystopia however isn’t loaded with negativity, so we’re taking it on, taking charge.

TRADE UP TO: TWILIGHTING
Copying couture beauty directives is not always advisable, but silver highlights that look like starshine? Obey, obey, obey. Sprinkle glimmer dust across temples and as eye-lights to harness a Dior vibe. Or Chanel-ify your cheekbones with a cool moonshiny glow. Bask in prettiness!
1.
THE FRESH CUT A new hair situation is necessary. The ’80s are a thing right now, but don’t let mullet talk scare you. Burberry SS17 gave us a decent working midlength model – enough length to shake out with texturiser in a weekend-casual act or to comb into slick office submission.

A PROPER SCENT A splash of saltwater won’t cut it in the winter. Go for luxury notes of leather and woods such as cedar for deep masculinity with a freshtalking, sexy feel. Bottega Veneta Pour Homme Parfum has more pull than Ryan Gosling in a jazz bar.
3. THE WIND-DOWN It’s footy season again and things can get a bit tense. Remember: real blokes take baths. Dump a mineral mix in the water to iron out the kinks.

Torii
Shopping-mall sushi, anyone? Don’t worry, you won’t find the raw-fish conveyor belt at Torii. Instead, you’ll get a new generation of insanely good Japanese food that merits a visit to Pacific Fair just for this. The sushi rolls alone will lure you to the bar or one of the wooden tables in this zen, minimalist space, but it’s the kushiyaki – small skewers of charcoal-grilled meat or veg – that really shine at this izakaya joint. Supplement with dozens of other small, savoury Japanese dishes – from karaage chicken to unagi and foie gras millefeuille – and one of the 75 or so whiskies ready to pour (the drink being Torii’s other speciality), and you’ll have yourself a Japanese-style meal as good as any you’d find in Tokyo.

Comuna Cantina
The flavours and styling of South America’s bustling street-food scene go surprisingly well with the Queensland climate at Comuna Cantina. Think Mexican tacos and tortas, Venezuelan arepas and Brazilian churrasco, but with an amped-up clean-eating ante – Aussie style – with delights such as chia coconut crumble, fresh guac and quinoa featuring throughout the traditional (yet lighter) menu. An al fresco honeycomb-tiled bar – where margaritas and lime-topped beers are prepared for long lunches that linger into dinner – and clean white tables under a canopy of string lights give the palmfringed patio a festive Latin street-market feel at night.

Aquitaine
Craving a tray of shucked oysters and a frosty flute of champagne poolside? You don’t need to go to France. Just head to Aquitaine in the Resort for a taste of French flair. Fresh, local ingredients are transformed into seriously appetising Gallic favourites with a modern twist. Everything from succulent duck à l’orange to flavourful bouillabaisse and house-made charcuterie are plated like works of art, just as they would be in the gastronomic heaven that is the restaurant’s namesake region.

Bin 232
Asian-fusion tapas are a good idea. Trust us. And trust Daniel Ridgeway, the Queensland chef behind the concept at Bin 232, the moody, industrial-chic spot you’ll want to hit up for a glass of wine and smattering of small plates to share among friends in the open-air atmosphere of The Patio. Sticky soy pork belly invitingly and successfully shares menu space with jamon, while edamame sits alongside marinated olives, and bao and tacos compete for your attention. Plus, the service is on point, so you know you’ll get your fill before the opening credits start rolling at the cinema.
Need to know: the Australian native superfoods making a buzz. Kakadu plum (Terminalia ferdinandiana)
This is the ultimate superfood, holding the highestrecorded levels of vitamin C of any fruit in the world.
Lemon myrtle (Backhousia citriodora)
The healer. Lemon myrtle is an Australian shrub packed with minerals, nutrients and vitamins. Indigenous Australians used its leaves for a variety of purposes, including crushing them into a paste to use on infections, sucking them for hydration and burning them to repel insects. Triple threat.

Mountain pepper leaf (Tasmannia lanceolata) This medicinal leaf grows in forests and is often used to treat sores inside the mouth.
Aniseed myrtle (Syzygium anisatum)
Found in subtropical rainforests, this scented leaf is known for its antimicrobial essential oils. It was used as an energy-boosting tonic during the Second World War.
Davidson plum (Davidsonia)
The Davidsonia is an edible fruit that contains high levels of antioxidants and is one of the most nutritional native Australian fruits.
Riberry (Syzygium luehmannii)
Riberries were used for thousands of years by the Aboriginal people as a prime food source. They were considered medicinal, due to the high amount of vitamins and minerals in the berries that helped to strengthen the immune system.
Rivea
For authentic Italian look no further than Rivea. The marble-fronted waterside restaurant is perfect for people watching while you dig in to mouthewatering, modern-Italian fare. Airy-crusted pizzas are wood-fired to order and pastas are house made, as witnessed through the fishbowl kitchen that’s central to the restaurant’s circular set-up. Finish with a visit to the gelato and coffee cart to fortify yourself for further shopping.
Quandong (Santalum acuminatum)
The desert quandong, most commonly known as the native peach, was used by indigenous Australians for both medicinal and ceremonial purposes. The fruit was believed to boost energy and its kernels were used to create anti-inflammatory and antibacterial pastes.
Wattleseeds
These edible seeds, which come from acacia, are high in nutrients and low in toxicity, and used by indigenous Australians to make bush bread.
Strawberry gum (Eucalyptus olida)
Native to the Northern Tablelands of New South Wales, strawberry gum is a tree that provides an aromatic scent. The leaves are used for their berry flavour and have often been laid over fire to release oils to assist with stomach problems.

Cowch Dessert Cocktail Bar
sweet pizza, churros and ice cream at cowch dessert cocktail bar
If Willy Wonka designed a dessert menu, it might look something like the cornucopia of desserts and drinks on offer here. Rows of pastel Naked Pops are displayed, beckoning you to dress them up in all manner of sweet treats. For the grown-ups there are boozy guilty pleasures, such as salted caramel espresso martinis, sweet pizzas, ice cream sliders and stacks of chewy churros. Feeling nostalgic? Revisit your childhood with a Cherry Ripe hot cocoa. While Wonka’s over-the-top style might be all over the menu, the decor is a study in refined fun. Pink stools sit alongside Scandi-style wooden tables and playful yet subtle udder lights float over an airy space that’s graced by an open fire pit. It’s a groovy, sophisticated place with a menu that’s decidedly young at heart.
