Design Intention Objectives of the Urban Motel
I want to offer a convenient, informative and exciting motel to San Francisco from different aspects. My primary objectives for the urban motel design are comfort and excitement of living in San Francisco. To bring out this experience, I want to balance the indoor and outdoor experience by maximizing the spaces through vertical design. The vertical design will be a bridge to connect relation of main visitor’s spaces in the motel, such as the rooms, cafÊ, outdoor pool, and parking. My secondary objective is to create an informative motel. I want to reflect San Francisco’s characteristics/ fun facts to the design, such as "San Francisco is built on more than 50 hills", it fogs almost 100 days a year, etc. These would be the theme of the urban motel, and possibly an additional experience for the visitors. Since the site is on hilly site, the scenery is also an additional aspect to improve the theme; for example, besides offering flyers and brochure about tourist spots, scenery can be used by capturing certain spot and make an interactive simple activity with it. The last objective that I consider is to limit confusion, in terms of accessibility, privacy, and circulation. Even with a little complex design, I want to relate to common sense and logic to enhance the comfort of the visitors.

Urban Motel Final Project
I call my motel design “The Urban Motel”, I want to offer a motel that balances the indoor and outdoor experience by maximizing the spaces through vertical design. It is located at 111 States Street, where the view of corona heights park and Castro district are intersecting. Since the site is located at hill side and has higher elevation compare to surrounding residence, my first design intention was to utilize the advantage of natural sunlight and air and the view. The arrangement of rooms, balcony, and accessibilities are intentionally designed not only to maximize the advantage of the location, but also to give comfortable personal and public spaces. With the pleasant spaces and view, I intended to make an easy access for the visitors, once they enter the motel and while they are in the motel. The entrance is located at the 16th street, and goes straight to parking lot, where they can find the reception. The elevator and stairs is located in the center, where all the different parts of building intersected, including the rooftop café and pool. This concludes my design intentions for Urban Motel – a vertical design that provides comfort and excitement as the city does.
