EXPERIENCE EUROPE IN THE SPRING, WHEN ITS ANCIENT HEART BLOOMS ANEW There’s simply no better way to experience Holland and Belgium than by river cruiser, gliding past fields of tulips and windmills to visit quaint villages and Renaissance cities seemingly frozen in time: Ghent, Antwerp, and Bruges. And, of course, we’ll visit Keukenhof Gardens, 79 acres of breathtaking beauty, open only in the springtime. Don’t miss your chance to visit one of Europe’s most magical corners, at the most enchanting time of year!

GEMÜTLICHKEIT Hollandaise Forget about stopping and smelling the roses — the industrious Dutch turned tulips into Tulipmania, creating one of the world’s first great financial bubbles … and one of Europe’s grandest gardens!

Day 1 Amsterdam, the Netherlands After embarking this afternoon, settle in and enjoy a welcome reception followed by dinner on board. We’ll remain docked in Amsterdam overnight, so if you feel like going ashore and getting to know one of Europe’s friendliest capitals, this is your chance. If you want to experience what the natives call “gezellig,” a Dutch quality that translates as convivial or cozy, the best place to go is one of the traditional “brown cafes,” named for their wood paneling and walls that have been stained brown by smoke over the centuries. Order one of the outstanding beers on tap and you’ll understand what gezellig is all about. If you’re interested in something more cultural, Amsterdam is home to many of the world’s most famous museums, including the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, and Anne Frank House.

Day 3 Arnhem Known today as the site of one of the most infamous battles of World War II, Arnhem has been a center of conflict since its earliest days, thanks to its strategic position on the Rhine River. The valiant but doomed Battle of Arnhem comes to vivid life today in a fascinating excursion visiting sites associated with General Montgomery’s infamous Operation Market Garden, including a tour of Arnhem and a visit to the Hartenstein Airborne Museum, dedicated to the battle fought here in September of 1944. Alternately, you might join our other excursion visiting the Kröller-Müller Museum,

Troops unexpectedly captured several POWs. Not such an extraordinary event, except that one of these was a young German woman. She was to enter history as the only female POW in the Battle of Arnhem.

Day 2 Amsterdam/Volendam Drink in the beauty of the “Venice of the North” on a city tour this morning that includes a boat cruise through Amsterdam’s canals, a World Heritage Site. Lined with charming gabled row houses and bobbing houseboats, the four main city canals are Prinsengracht, Herengracht, Keizersgracht, and Singel, with numerous smaller canals — 165 in all — intersecting the various neighborhoods. After lunch we’ll cruise north across the Ijsselmeer, a shallow, artificial lake created in 1932 with the damming of the Zuiderzee. Our destination is the picturesque fishing village of Volendam, where you can sample a traditional slice of Dutch life along the village’s primary thoroughfare, lined with colorful cafés and purveyors of fresh fish, handmade cheeses, and colorful, traditional crafts. On a guided

Culture

Zuiderzee, which means “southern sea” in Dutch, was originally a shallow bay of the North Sea, nearly 2,000 square miles of water 16 feet at its deepest. Some of the fishing villages around the region grew into powerful trade centers during Holland’s Golden Age, but fell back into sleepy obscurity until the Dutch painters of the 19th century came, finding inspiration and sparking interest in the region’s “typically Dutch” culture. For a real slice of Dutch life, there’s no other place like it!

17

Day 5 Ghent/Bruges, Belgium We’ll arrive in Ghent early this morning. Another important center of trade in the Middle Ages, Ghent is a hidden gem of canalside cathedrals and museums filled with works by Dutch and Flemish masters. Our guided city tour takes in just a few of the highlights, including Saint Bavo’s Cathedral, a medieval masterpiece that is home to van Eyck’s peerless Adoration of the Mystic Lamb altarpiece.

Windmills

Y KINDERDIJK

Believe it or not, most of Holland lies below sea level — hence their ingenious and innovative system of dykes, sluices, canals, and windmills — the best of which you’ll see with a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Kinderdijk. Prepare to be amazed!

home to a world-renowned collection of 19th and 20th century art. Particularly worth seeing is the impressively large collection of works by Vincent van Gogh.

Day 4 Middleburg/Veere “Ghent should rank as the most surprising city in Flanders, combining beauty and culture with creativity, cutting edge design and a vibrant restaurant and nightlife scene.” — John Brunton, The Observer

18

After a morning of sailing we arrive at noon in Middelburg, capital of the Dutch province of Zeeland and a treasure trove of lovingly restored medieval masterpieces, including the town hall and the 12th-century abbey. Set off on your independent or guided walking tour of the town or join another excursion to the Deltaworks Project at Neeltje Jans, an incredible collection of dams, sluices, locks, dikes, and storm surge barriers that has been declared one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers. Following the Deltaworks, the tour will also stop in the charming medieval town of Veere before rejoining the ship.

In the afternoon, more unforgettable art, architecture, and romance beckons, on our excursion to Bruges. Built around a double ring of picturesque canals and connected by charming arched footbridges, Bruges’ artfully crafted stone guildhalls and opulent churches stand elegant witness to the city’s former wealth and importance as a major lace-making center. We’ll explore this lovely city on a guided tour that includes the best possible way to see it all, a canal boat tour, and enjoy lunch at one of the local restaurants.

Day 6 Antwerp Since the height of the Renaissance, Antwerp has been a city defined by beauty. Rubens lived and worked here (some of his masterpieces can be seen in the massive Gothic cathedral), the city’s main square, the Grote Markt, is surely one of the most picturesque public spaces in the world, and the diamond trade is still at the heart of Antwerp’s ongoing prosperity. We’ll set off on a guided tour to learn more about Antwerp’s treasures — in the afternoon you are free to sample them on your own. Tonight, back on board ship, enjoy a special Captain’s Gala Dinner followed by dancing. But don’t stay up too late, because tomorrow holds a busy day, full of windmills and a visit to the world’s largest flower show at Keukenhof.

“Had a fantastic time. One of the best cruises we have taken. Will definitely recommend it to friends and relatives “ — Richard & Jeanne G.

in small dedicated shops.

Day 7 Kinderdijk/Utrecht/Keukenhof/ Amsterdam, the Netherlands This morning, set off on a walking tour of the world’s largest collection of working windmills, in Kinderdijk. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the 19 working windmills — of several different varieties — date from the 18th century, when they were built as part of a larger water management system to prevent floods. From Kinderdijk we cruise to Utrecht, where we’ll disembark for our excursion to yet another Dutch icon: Keukenhof, the most famous flower show on Earth, where literally millions of blooms are on display amongst walkways, parks, and gardens filled with sculptures. Although of humble origins — the “keukenhof,” or “kitchen garden,” was created in the early 15th century by Countess Jacoba of Bavaria as her herb garden — today more than 7 million flower bulbs, such as tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths, are planted each year, drawing nearly a million visitors in the 8 weeks it is open each spring. Following our visit to Keukenhof, we’ll rejoin the ship in Amsterdam for a final night on board. Enjoy an unforgettable canal boat tour of Bruges.

JUST ONE OF THE MANY INCLUDED FEATURES ON YOUR AMRAS JOURNEY Wine-tasting in Cochem — on a cruise full of highlights, this is surely one of the best! Cochem, located on the lovely Moselle River, has been producing some of the world's favorite wines for centuries. During our call here, we've made sure to include a wine-tasting … the ideal way to sit back, relax, take in some of Germany's finest scenery, and toast to traveling with good friends and plenty of "gemütlichkeit."

Begin with your choice of two different pre-cruise experiences: join our exclusive escorted 6-day tour featuring Paris and Ghent, cities rich in romance and history, or go solo with our 4-day independent city stay in beautiful Brussels, Belgium.

 See page 92 and 93 for details

Day 1 Amsterdam, the Netherlands Your cruise begins when you’re met at your arrival point (airport, train station, or Prelude hotel) and transfer to your ship. Enjoy time to settle into your cabin and unpack before joining your fellow passengers and crew for a welcome cocktail reception followed by a festive dinner. We’ll be docked overnight here in Amsterdam, so after dinner we’ve left the evening free for you to explore on your own. One of Europe’s liveliest, friendliest capitals, Amsterdam delights at every corner, with charming parks and gardens, lively squares and plazas, picturesque neighborhoods, and countless museums and galleries.

Day 3 Cologne, Germany Germany’s fourth-largest city has been an important trading center since the Romans arrived in the first century AD. On a guided walking tour, see many of its greatest riches, including the famous Cologne Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Germany’s most visited landmark. The largest Gothic church in Northern Europe, the cathedral’s treasures include its marble High Altar and the celebrated Shrine of the Three Kings. Said to contain the remains of the Three Wise Men, the bronze and silver shrine is designed in the shape of a basilica, ornamented with gilt, enamels, and gemstones.

Dating back to the 13th century, the Shrine of the Three Kings in Cologne is the largest reliquary in the Western world; it holds the crowned skulls and clothes of the Three Wise Men.

Day 2 Amsterdam/Volendam/Utrecht, the Netherlands This morning set off on a city tour of Amsterdam featuring a canal boat tour, the ideal way to explore this charming, eccentric capital. Our tour includes a stop in Edam to sample — what else? — some of the region’s world-famous cheese, before rejoining the ship in Volendam, a delightful gem of a town where you can still find locals still wearing traditional Dutch garb. (Those seeking a more leisurely day might decide to stay on board for a sumptuous lunch and a scenic cruise across the Ijsselmeer, one of Holland’s largest inland, freshwater lakes, to Volendam — just one of the delightful choices that comes with river cruising!)

Day 4 Cochem, Germany & the Moselle River This morning brings one of the highlights of our cruise, as we travel along the Moselle River, gliding past steep vineyards stretching on either side all the way to our destination, the town of Cochem. Granted its town rights in 1332, when it was held by the Archbishops of Trier, Cochem will reward history and architecture buffs with its countless treasures, and wine lovers with its more recent creations — this is, after all, the heart of the famous Moselle wine region. Between Koblenz and Rüdesheim lies one of the most picture-perfect stretches of the Rhine, with hilltop castles overlooking terraced vineyards and charming villages set like jewels along the shore. The entire Upper Middle Rhine Valley has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site — a marvel you can appreciate in comfort and style from the decks of your acclaimed river cruise ship as she glides through this glorious landscape. Dozens of hilltop castles and fortresses, built over a period of a thousand years, stand as picturesque ruins of another time; their presence, coupled with the dramatic physical beauty of the valley, were what drew the Romantic painters and poets of the late 18th century, who made this their Mecca. A highlight of our cruise here is our passage through the narrowest part of the Rhine, past the Lorelei Rock. You’ll learn about the legend of the Lorelei as we pass — unwary sailors for centuries were in danger from her song (or perhaps the treacherous rocks and currents of the narrows?), but you need not fear; her power today lies solely in her awesome beauty, soaring straight up out of the water. During our stop in Koblenz we’ll enjoy a guided walking tour as well as some free time to visit the shops of local artisans. Our guided walk in Rüdesheim will include a visit to Siegfried's Musical Cabinet, a fascinating collection of self-playing instrumental inventions, followed by dinner at one of the charming local restaurants, where you can sample a glass of a local vintage — if you can choose which of the many tempting varieties you want to enjoy! Day 6 Mannheim/Heidelberg/ Speyer, Germany Located at the confluence of the Rhine and Neckar Rivers, the bustling city of Mannheim is a city steeped in a baroque charm that extends even to its Wasserturm, or Water Tower, a fanciful bit of 19th-century architecture that has become the city’s symbol. travel to neighboring Heidelberg, home of Germany’s oldest university and another breathtakingly lovely city. Here we’ll take a guided tour and see Heidelberg Castle, the romantic Renaissance ruin looming above the Alstadt that has been luring artists for centuries, and continues to draw 3 ½ million visitors a year. If the water tower marks Mannheim, then it’s spires that signal Speyer. Its Cathedral, a basilica with four towers and two domes, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that dates back to 1030. One of the most important monuments from the time of the Holy Roman Empire, it was the burial place of the German emperors for nearly 300 years. To see it from the water, as pilgrims have for centuries, is an experience you will never forget! Spend the afternoon wandering Speyer’s outdoor markets or borrow a bike from the ship for a leisurely ride along the Rhine, following in the footsteps of the Romans who settled this area around 10 B.C. This evening, gather with your shipmates for a festive Captain’s Gala Dinner followed, perhaps, by dancing under the stars and spires of Speyer.

Our final port of call is Basel, in the northwestern corner of Switzerland, bordering France and Germany. All transfers are arranged, whether you are off to the airport for your return flight home or embarking on a dazzling Finale to complement your Rhine & Moselle river cruise.

GEMÜTLICHKEIT according to the Guide: “This is the rare spot renowned for skillfully knowing how to leave French classics untouched, unmodernized, and absolutely delicious.” — Michelin Guide

Les Halles is said to be the gastronomic capital of the world.

Start your cruise in style with our exclusive Paris & Dijon escorted Prelude, or treat yourself to our 4-day independent stay in Paris before you embark.

 See pages 92 and 98 for details

Day 1 Chalon-sur-Saone/Tournus If you haven’t joined us from either our Independent Prelude three-night hotel stay in Paris or from our five-night Escorted Prelude in Paris and Dijon, then we will pick you up at Lyon airport or train station on your included transfer. After embarking the ship in Chalonsur-Saone, settle in and enjoy a welcome reception followed by dinner on board as we cruise to Tournus. Originally a Roman settlement, with the building of its magnificent Romanesque abbey in the 11th century, the town became a key pilgrimage center.

Day 3 Maçon/Bourg-en-Bresse/Lyon This morning you have a choice of relaxing on board and enjoying the scenery as the ship cruises to Lyon, or setting off on an excursion to the alpine city of Bourg-en-Bresse, former capital of the Dukes of Savoy. A lovely, flower-bedecked town famous for its chickens — the beautiful, tri-colored birds as well as the delicious specialty dish Poulet de Bresse — this is also the birthplace of a number of famous personalities, including two noted French chefs: Georges Blanc and Jacques Pépin. During our excursion we’ll visit a local Bressonnaise farm and enjoy lunch at former farm-turned-restaurant. Following lunch we’ll stop in Bourg-enBresse to visit the royal monastery of Brou.

The magnificent Church of Brou was built in the astonishing, flamboyant Gothic Style of the 16th century. The tombs of Marguerite of Austria and her husband Philibert II are exquisitely carved — an Art History lesson on this period.

Day 2 Tournus/Maçon On a morning walking tour of Tournus we’ll visit the superb Benedictine Abbey of St. Philibert, with its striking medieval stone gate flanked by twin rounded towers and breathtaking 12th century mosaic floor illustrating the zodiac and calendar — uncovered by chance in 2002! Enjoy lunch on board as we cruise through the vineyards of southern Burgundy’s Maçonnais region, where the grand crus Beaujolais wines are produced. Enjoy the scenery or attend an onboard lecture on the art of restoring old books before we arrive in the lovely village of Macon, located on the western bank of the Saone River. At one point bordering both the Holy German Empire and the Kingdom of France, it is no surprise that the art of living well as been polished to perfection here. We’ll spend the night docked here in Maçon, offering you the chance to stroll around and explore at your own pace — whether on foot or on one of the ship’s complimentary bicycles, you’ll find one delightful vista after another.

Vineyards

Y MAÇONNAIS

With a night spent docked in Maçon, you are in the very heart of white wine heaven: Chardonnay is the main grape grown here, as it has been for centuries. Stroll off ship to enjoy a glass or two of the local vintages while we're here — now that's the art of travel.

33

This afternoon, we’ll visit one of the local wine estates, one of the Domaine Beaujolais, for a tour and tasting. Back on board, browse through a tempting selection of styles from Lyon’s fabled silk traders and enjoy more gorgeous scenery as we cruise to Roquemaure, the heart of France’s fabled Cote du Rhone wine producing region.

Day 5 Viviers/Roquemaure

Art

Y VINCENT VAN GOGH

As an artist,Vincent Van Gogh was prone to painting places and locations that had personal meaning and were familiar to him. Starry Night commemorates the view Van Gogh had from his window during his hospitalization in the mental asylum in Arles in 1889. Painted a little over a year before that, Starry Night Over the Rhone is the view Van Gogh had of the Rhone River from his rented apartment in Place Lamartine. Although Starry Night is more famous, Starry Night Over the Rhone commemorates a happier time in Van Gogh's life.

Day 4 Lyon With more than 2,000 years of good living under its belt, Lyon is a place worth getting to know. France’s third-largest city, it has been a commercial and financial powerhouse for centuries, a center of wine-making, silk-spinning, and inspired gastronomic invention. On our guided tour we’ll see its highlights the best way, by coach and on foot, and explore the Old Quarter, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of medieval treasures and the city’s unique “traboules” — a romantic network of covered passageways leading from one street to another via corridors through the tightlypacked houses. Our tour ends at Les Halles, an indoor food market that is a veritable “foodies heaven.” Fancy a foie gras macaroon? A handful of escargot? We’ll see it all here, and even sample some of the specialties with the help of our own local guide.

This morning you are in for a treat with a visit to a truffle farm, where the delicacies are carefully harvested in specially planted groves of trees., followed by a walking tour of Viviers, home of the oldest cathedral in France that is still in use. A busy trading center of 30,000 people at its height, Viviers today is a quiet riverside town of simple stone houses where time seems to have stopped somewhere during the Middle Ages. On our guided walking tour we’ll explore the tiny streets of the old medieval heart of Viviers, dominated by the Saint-Vincent Cathedral, which looms proudly over the town. Completed in the 12th century and refurbished over the years, the cathedral’s Roman and Gothic heritage can still be seen, along with its priceless Gobelin tapestries.

Day 6 Roquemaure/Pont du Gard/ Chateauneuf de Pape Today we’ll visit one of the most famous and popular Roman sites in France, the Pont du Gard, one of the best-preserved aqueduct bridges in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985. Built in the 1st century AD, it carried an estimated 44 million gallons of water a day to the fountains, baths, and homes of Nimes; after the 4th century, lack of maintenance led to it becoming increasingly clogged, although it remained an important toll bridge for centuries. From the Roman influence we move to the Popes, specifically Clement V, former Archbishop of Bordeaux. Upon relocating the papacy to Avignon, he and his successors, particularly John XXII, did much to improve viticulture in the area. It was under John XXII that the wines of the region came to be known

among them the luminous Starry Night Over the Rhone. This was also, tragically, where his mental health deteriorated, culminating in his severing his ear and ending up in the Old Hospital of Arles. The Romans ruled

Day 7 Avignon/Arles The walled medieval city of Avignon is a UNESCO World Heritage Site brimming with history, culture, and art. After all, this was the “City of the Popes,” the seat of the Papacy from 1309 to 1377. On our guided walking tour you’ll see the medieval ramparts — practically the only surviving city walls in France — that the popes built to defend their new home, as well as beautiful Clock Tower Square, with its colorful café terraces overlooking City Hall, the Opera Theatre, and the mansions of the bishops. And we’ll venture into the true fortified heart of Avignon, the Palais des Papes, an immense Gothic building with 18-feet-thick walls enclosing a maze of galleries, chambers, and chapels. From the “City of Popes” we travel to the landscapes of van Gogh, in Arles. In the 15 months the artist spent in Arles, he created more than 300 paintings and drawings, Roman vestiges lend Avignon its timeless air of grace.

GEMÜTLICHKEIT in the garden

Monets Garden JUST ONE OF THE MANY INCLUDED FEATURES ON YOUR AMRAS JOURNEY

"My garden is my most beautiful masterpiece," Monet once said, and on our visit to his exquisite estate you may agree. Whatever the season, the gardens are awash in color, from the whites and pinks of early spring to the water lilies of summer and the asters of autumn — an endless source of inspiration for one of the 20th century's greatest artists.

“People discuss my art and pretend to understand as if it were necessary to understand, when it's simply necessary to love.” — Claude Monet

 See pages 92 & 94 for details

Day 1 Paris, France Embarking your cruise ship this afternoon, enjoy time settling in before meeting your fellow guests and crew at a welcome cocktail reception. Later, enjoy the Captain's Welcome Dinner as we sail out of Paris (don't despair — we will be back to savor her delights!).

Day 2 Conflans/Auvers sur Oise/ Chateau d’Auvers From Conflans, we’ll enjoy a guided visit to the pretty riverside village of Auvers sur Oise. In the second half of the 19th century, this lovely spot drew artists such as Camille Pissarro, Paul Cezanne, Camille Corot, and Charles-Francois Daubigny, but it is Vincent van Gogh whose memory looms over them all. In a wheat field just outside town he took his life, after creating numerous — unsold! — paintings here, works that would become priceless masterpieces. Join the legions who have paid their respects at his grave and gaze on the scenery that inspired his gifted and all too short life. We’ll also visit the town’s lovely Chateau, now a museum offering audio-visual accounts of the lives of the Impressionists, along with some artifacts from their time here (although, unfortunately, none of the paintings they produced). If the weather is fine and you feel like a stroll or a bicycle ride, you’ll find lots of lovely nooks and crannies to explore, from the lovely chapel and old hospital to nearby Roman ruins.

Day 3 Rouen/Abbey Trail With its beautiful medieval quarter and soaring Gothic cathedral, Rouen is a vision straight out of the Middle Ages — you can even stand on the exact spot where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake by the invading English. Such atrocities were standard fare for Rouen, which has seen conflict from its earliest days, due in large part to its strategic location on the Seine. Today however, largely restored after its last drubbing in World War II, this lovely City of Spires is filled with a number of important churches and museums stuffed with riches from Normandy’s long and colorful history. On our guided walking tour we’ll visit the cathedral and the Eglise Jean d’Arc, an eye-catching modern church in front of which stands a concrete-and-metal cross marking the spot where The Maid of Orleans met her fate.

One of the patron saints of France, the "Maid of Orleans" was only 19 when she was burned at the stake for heresy; 25 years later she was pronounced innocent and declared a martyr.

Culture

Y NORMAN CONQUESTY

As we cruise north through Normandy, every bend of the Seine will bring another feast for your senses: cathedrals and apple-brandy Calvados, camembert and Crusaders, chateaux and fishing villages, gardens and Gothic masterpieces.

41

After lunch on board we’ll set off on an excursion to Honfleur, one of the most picturesque of the Cote Fleurie’s seaside towns and another spot beloved by French artists. The Vieux Bassin harbor, lined with 17th-century, Renaissance buildings, looks much as it did when the Impressionists painted it, and the half-timbered houses and cobbled streets lined with stylish boutiques make this enchanting spot a traveler’s dream.

Day 5 Caudebec en Caux/ Normandy Beaches

Y D-DAY

“Take time to stroll on the beaches and through the villages and to drive country lanes that are once again regulated by rural rhythms, just as if they’d never been devastated at all. It’s pretty and poignant, and here’s a strange thing, it brings out the best in people. There’s respect in the air and a common bond between visitors. Folk behave well, smile and chat more easily than usual.” — Anthony Peregrine,The Sunday Times

At 6:30 am on June 6, 1944, 135,000 men and 20,000 vehicles of the Allied troops landed on the beaches of Normandy, making their first incursion in Europe in World War II. Called Operation Overlord, the invasion took place on five beachheads, dubbed Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword. On our guided tour we will explore the area, stopping for lunch and visits to Point du Hoc, Omaha Beach, the American Military Cemetery, and the village of Arromanches, where the Allies built the ingenious artificial ports that allowed them to land.

Day 6 Les Andelys /Giverny/ Monet's Garden

"Beautiful and heart-breaking …

Back on board, enjoy lunch and an afternoon of leisurely cruising as we head to Caudebec en Caux, jumping off point for one of Normandy’s most scenic routes, the Abbey Trail. From the outdoor abbey of Saint-Wadrille we continue to the beautiful abbey ruins at Jumieges, finishing our trip with a delicious dinner featuring traditional Normandaise entertainment.

the Normandy Beaches and Military Cemetary are places every American should visit." — H. Hammond, CT

42

Day 4 Caudebec en Caux/ Etretat/Honfleur This morning you are in for a treat as we visit one of the hidden gems of the Normandy coast, the pebbled beach at Falaises. Known as Etretat Plage, its dramatic, white chalk cliffs and offshore needles of stone were the inspiration for artists such as Boudin, Monet, and Manet.

www.amrascruises.com •

1-844-462-6727

This morning we arrive in Les Andelys, situated on a bend of the Seine and one of the most picturesque places in France. From here we’ll set off by coach, stopping briefly at the imposing Chateau Gaillard, built in 1196 by England’s King Richard the Lionhearted. Constructed in just one year, it is a breathtaking example of medieval military architecture. Our destination is the town of Giverny, home of Claude Monet from 1883 until his death in 1926. Visit the beautiful gardens and charming stone farmhouse where he lived and worked and see the water garden with its Japanese bridge, water lilies, wisteria, and azaleas that inspired many of his masterpieces. Returning to the ship, enjoy lunch and an afternoon and evening of leisurely cruising as we head back to Paris. Tonight, celebrate your cruise at the Captain's Farewell Dinner.

Day 7 Paris, France Sit back and relax this morning as we take you on a guided tour of one of the world’s most magnificent capitals. You could spend a lifetime getting to know the City of Light, but for now we will stick to the highlights, from the Eiffel Tower to the Latin Quarter, the Cathedral of Notre Dame, the Opera House, and along the glittering Champs Elysées. Following lunch on board, we’ll head to the Louvre for a guided tour, a fortress-turned royal palace that the Revolutionary Convention in turn made into a national museum, in 1793. The paintings, sculptures, and artefacts on display here include Assyrian, Etruscan, Greek, Coptic, and Islamic art and antiquities. When it opened in the late 18th century, the Louvre contained some 2,500 paintings and objets d’art — today nearly 35,000 are on display, including the Venus de Milo, the Winged Victory of Samothrace, and, of course, the Mona Lisa. Finally, we’ll enjoy one last treat: petit fours and farewell cocktails on the private Bateau Mouche showcasing Paris in all its illuminated glory.

The high chalk cliffs of Les Andelys overlook one of the great loops of the Seine river.

GEMÜTLICHKEIT with milk & sugar

FOR A TRUE TASTE OF OLD WORLD EUROPE, LINGER IN A CAFÉ … “An intangible cultural heritage” recognized by UNESCO and “…an oasis of gemütlichkeit” according to Vienna’s official online travel guide (www.wien.info), Vienna’s cafes are romantic reminders of gracious, fin-de-siecle Europe. The haze of smoke has lessened, but the high ceilings, plush upholstery, gleaming wood, and — most importantly! — unparalleled coffee and pastries remain much as they were when the intelligentsia of Europe gathered here more than century ago. Drink deep and enjoy a real taste of history!

Dom St. Peter, one of Bavaria’s grandest Gothic cathedrals, and stroll through medieval Old Town, with its narrow lanes, elegant patrician houses, charming churches, and stone towers. With some time to explore on your own, you’ll find the city and its environs a delightfully easy — and rewarding — place to explore on your own. This evening, enjoy a Bavarian folk show on board.

Day 1 Nuremberg After embarking this afternoon, settle in and enjoy a welcome cocktail party followed by dinner on board. This evening, if you’re so inclined, you might step out to get a look at Nuremburg. Infamous during WWII as the site of Hitler’s vast party rallies, the city was reduced to rubble by an Allied bombing campaign. Following the Nuremburg Trials, painstaking reconstruction began, using the original stone, and today many of the city’s main buildings, including the castle and old churches in the Alstadt, have been rebuilt. Just as importantly, over the years, Nuremberg has regained its lively Bavarian cheer. If you have time while we’re here, set out and sample a slice of the city’s acclaimed nightlife, or visit a tavern for a tankard of fresh-brewed beer.

During the Nuremberg Trials the judges' bench was equipped with a microphone, headphones and light signals, asking

Day 2 Kelheim/Regensburg This morning we arrive in Kelheim. Boasting more than 1,000 years of brewing tradition, this is a beer-lover’s paradise — in fact, the world’s oldest operating brewery/monastery is located here. We’ll end our guided tour of Kelheim with a visit to Weltenberg Monastery, where you can judge their brewing expertise. Next we cruise on to another charming Danube port of call, Regensburg. The first capital of Bavaria, home of dukes, kings, and bishops, Regensburg has been a busy trading center since Roman times — as attested to by the numerous Roman, Romanesque, and Gothic sites that complement the town’s essentially medieval character. On a guided walking tour, your guide will point out many of the highlights, including the remains of the emperor’s old Roman Wall and Porta Praetoria, the 12th-century Old Bridge, the

our guided walking tour we’ll visit St. Stephen’s Cathedral, a baroque masterpiece filled with statues and frescoes that is also home to the world’s largest pipe organ. We’ll also visit the 14th-century Rathaus, or Town Hall, decorated with murals depicting scenes from the Nibelungenlied, the 12th-century epic poem believed to have been composed here. Alternately, you might decide to pass on the walking tour of Passau and set off on either of two offered full-day excursions, one featuring Mozart’s lovely alpine city of Salzburg and the other to the 13th century medieval town and castle of Cesky Krumlov, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the South Bohemian region of the Czech Republic. Back on board, we’ll glide across the border into Austria, cruising to Linz. A fascinating blend of old and new, industrial and cultural, home of the Linzertorte, Linz was named a European Capital of Culture in 2009, and its blend of modern museums, daring public art installations, and charming medieval Alstadt are sure to delight.

Visit impressive Melk Abbey whose recent grand restoration was financed in part by the sale of the abbey's Gutenberg Bible to Harvard.

Day 4 Melk/Wachau Valley/ Dürnstein/Vienna Spend the morning cruising through the Wachau Valley to Emmersdorf. If you were a fan of Umberto Eco’s The Name of the Rose, you are in for a very special treat today — a visit to the 900-year-old Benedictine abbey that inspired the novel. On our guided tour we’ll see the Marble Hall, with its allegorical painted ceiling, the Imperial Rooms, and the famous library, housing more than 80,000 priceless volumes. In the afternoon, sample the vintages of the Wachau Valley at a wine tasting, ending the day with a walking tour of Dürnstein. Our guided tour will also take us by coach through the picturesque Wachau Valley, a UNESCO-designated landscape of rolling vineyards, fairy-tale castles, and ancient hilltop ruins and monasteries. Spend a day in spectacular Salzburg, birthplace of Mozart.

This morning you awake in Vienna. After breakfast on board, start off on a guided city tour featuring all the highlights. We’ll travel the Ringstrasse, past one baroque masterpiece after another, take a walk through the gardens of royalty in the Hofburg, and stroll along Austria’s “5th Avenue,” the Kaernterstrasse, to see St. Stephen’s Cathedral. Afterwards, you may return to the ship for lunch or stay in town to sample Austria’s Imperial capital for yourself.

This afternoon, you have a choice of two Viennese treasures: join our guided tour of the Kunsthistoriches Museum (Museum of Fine Arts), housed in a festive palatial building on the Ringstrasse that is a work of art in itself; alternately, you might decide to join a guided tour of Schönbrunn Palace, the Habsburg’s 1,441-room Rococo “summer home” that has been preserved as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Day 6 Bratislava, Slovakia Welcome to Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, an Eastern European gem of a city set between the Danube and the legendary Carpathian Mountains. On our city tour we’ll take in centuries of wonderfully-preserved architecture, from the 13th-century Old Town Hall to Habsburg-era palaces and the city’s famous modern art spaces. Following lunch, we’ll set off on a trip to the outskirts of town to visit Schloss Hof, the far-from-humble country estate of Prince Eugene of Savoy, Austria’s great general and patron of the arts, who later in life hosted hunting parties here. If perhaps, you’ve had your fill of palatial treasures, you might want to wander the old town center of Bratislava on your own, or take out one of the ship’s bicycles to set off on one of the city’s numerous cycle paths. Tonight, we gather for the Captain’s gala dinner. Day 7 Budapest, Hungary Our final destination is Hungary’s capital city of Budapest. Of all the gracious cities that line the Danube, it is Budapest that truly has the river at her heart, separating the two halves of Buda and Pest, which you’ll see on our guided tours. In the morning, we’ll visit the glorious St. Matthias Church and Castle District; in the afternoon, we’ll visit the Pest side, paying our respects to Heroes Square, the elegant Opera House and Dohány Street. After dinner tonight, enjoy an evening cruise along Budapest, illuminated in all her glory, followed by a traditional Hungarian folklore show.

Day 1 Amsterdam, the Netherlands If you haven’t joined us from either of our independent Brussels or escorted Paris & Ghent Preludes, we will pick you up at the airport or train on your included transfer to your ship, the Amadeus Silver or Silver II. Your cruise begins in Amsterdam, with time to settle into your cabin and unpack before joining your fellow passengers and crew for a welcome reception and festive dinner. We’ll be docked overnight here in Amsterdam, so if you’re up for it, feel free to head out and sample some of the city’s famous nightlife.

and you'd have a hard time believeing its such a big city while visiting.

Day 2 Amsterdam/Utrecht This morning’s city tour of Amsterdam includes a canal boat tour — the ideal way to explore this charming, colorful capital. Full of canals and cafés, houseboats and bicycles, with masterpieces of art and architecture at every corner, Amsterdam is truly a city like no other. From its roots as a small fishing village, it rose to become a world power during the Dutch Golden Age, the leading center for finance and diamonds. Today it remains one of the world’s most vibrant cities, home to more than 170 different nationalities. Leaving Amsterdam, we’ll stop in Utrecht to join our ship, sailing on through the afternoon and evening to Cologne, Germany. Day 3 Cologne, Germany Today we’ll explore the treasures of Cologne, Germany’s fourth-largest city and an important trading center since Roman times. Keep an eye open as Cologne Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Germany’s most visited landmark, looms to greet us. The largest Gothic church in Northern Europe, the cathedral’s treasures draw more visitors than any

Y LIVING ON THE WATER

In the seventies houseboats became a new phenomenon in the Dutch canals. A houseboat has everything a normal house has; a living room, kitchen, bedroom, toilet, bathroom and often a small terrace. The only difference is that the owners live on the water and see the canal tours and other boats pass by their window. Holland counts many houseboats, but Amsterdam holds the record with approximately 2500 houseboats. — holland.com

After lunch and coffee tasting in Rüdesheim, we'll have an exclusive visit to a local museum. If you prefer, set off and explore Rüdesheim on your own, perhaps strolling along the Drosselgasse, the lively 15th-century street of restaurants and wine taverns running through the heart of the Old Town, or setting off on one of the ship’s complimentary bicycles to see a little of the countryside like one of the locals.

Y ALONG THE RHINE

Mile after mile they appear, taking you from awed to overwhelmed: welcome to the Rhine Gorge, where some 40 hilltop castles and fortresses stand witness to more than 1000 years of history. Abandoned, rediscovered by the Romantics, restored and reconstructed in the 19th century, they are one of the world’s greatest treasures — and a highlight of your journey that you will never forget.

Our visit to Rüdesheim includes a guided tour of Siegfried's enchanting collection of selfplaying music cabinets, calliopes, pianos, and other instruments from the 19th and early

Next you are in for what is undoubtedly the highlight of every Rhine cruise: a journey through the fabled Rhine Gorge, one of the most picture-perfect stretches of river in all of Europe, with hilltop castles, terraced vineyards, and wonderfully preserved medieval villages. In fact, the entire Upper Middle Rhine Valley has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site — an ideal blend of manmade marvels and dramatic physical beauty that has been a major tourist attraction since the Romantics made it all the rage in the 19th century, Works like Heinrich Heine’s famous poem, Lorelei, and Richard Wagner’s opera, Gotterdammerung, were inspired here — as you are sure to be as you cruise past the Lorelei Rock. Today we leave the Rhine to cruise the Main River, delving deeper into the heart of the region called Franconia. Known to the Romans as “Moenus” and called “Meune” in the epic poem Song of the Nibelungs, the Main (pronounced “Mine”) carries travelers through a breathtakingly beautiful landscape and literally back in time, from modern Mainz to traditional, medieval towns where wine and leather goods are still the primary trades and castles, churches, and picturesque ruins dot the hillsides. Here we’ll explore two picturesque Bavarian villages that have thrived on income from river traffic: Miltenberg and Wertheim. On a guided walk through Miltenberg you’ll see ample evidence of its affluence through the ages, from its lovely medieval and Renaissance homes to the Gothic splendor of its Merchant Hall. Later we’ll walk through neighboring Wertheim, with its overlapping, half-timbered houses, winding streets, and shops filled with art made by the town’s glassblowers, famed around the world for their beautiful Christmas decorations and distinctive round, flattened glass bottles in which the local Franconian wines are sold.

Day 6 Würzburg/Rothenburg All the pomp and pageantry of medieval Europe come alive today in beautiful Würzburg, the Pearl of Germany’s Romantic Road. Surrounded by sloping hills covered with vineyards, crowned by the ancient stones of Marienberg Fortress, Wurzburg is where the powerful prince-bishops of the 18th century built their “Franconian Rome,” a city of wealth and beauty. The highlight of our guided tour here is a visit to the magnificent Residenz, a

Residenz, former home of Bamberg’s powerful bishops, and the stunning 11th-century cathedral that holds the tomb of Pope Clement II. If you wish, feel free to explore Bamberg’s charms further on your own: a stroll through the romantically lit streets offers a rare chance to step back in time. Day 8 Nuremberg This morning it is time to bid your fellow cruisers goodbye and disembark for your return flight home — or the next stage in your European adventure.

To find the very heart of Bamberg, you need to go beneath the old cathedral — to the Historical Brewery Tavern Schlenkerla. Here monks, merchants,

Back on board ship this evening, gather to celebrate your Rhine adventures at the Captain’s Gala Dinner. GEMÜTLICHKEIT at its height If “gemütlichkeit” can be said to have a birthplace, it must have been in the Alps, where nature offers the ideal setting for a lifestyle centered around warmth, coziness, and the art of living well.

Sound of Music SPEND A DAY IN MAGICAL SALZBURG, WHERE THE HILLS ARE ALIVE WITH THE SOUND OF MUSIC

You don’t have to look far for inspiration in Salzburg. Set between the fast-flowing Salzach River and the snow-tipped Alps, full of baroque churches and the lavish homes of the great prince-bishops, perhaps it is Salzburg’s sheer beauty that has made it such a wellspring of artistic achievement. Whether your heart lifts to Mozart or Julie Andrews, your spirit is sure to be singing in Salzburg.

Start your cruise in style with our exclusive 8-day Warsaw, Krakow & Prague escorted Prelude, or treat yourself to our 4-day independent stay in Prague before you embark.

See pages 92 and 101 for details

Day 1 Passau, Germany If you haven’t joined us from either our independent Prelude hotel stay in Prague or from our seven-night escorted Prelude featuring Warsaw, Krakow & Prague, then we will pick you up at the closest airport or train on your included transfer. Your cruise begins in the delightful Bavarian city of Passau. After embarking this afternoon, settle into your cabin. Later, we’ll gather for a welcome cocktail party followed by dinner on board, enjoying panoramic views of the city and its beautiful — and strategic — location at the meeting of the Danube, Inn and Ilz Rivers.

Day 3 Passau//Salzburg or Cesky Krumlov/Linz, Austria Passau’s wealth and prestige grew throughout the centuries with the trading of salt — the “white gold” of central Europe — and the rise of Christianity; at its height, Passau was the largest bishopric in the Holy Roman Empire. Today the Old Town, or Alstadt, with its Italianate baroque buildings and narrow lanes, arches, and tunnels, remains much as it was during the reign of Passau’s powerful prince-bishops. On our guided walking tour you’ll see St. Stephen’s Cathedral, home to the world’s largest pipe organ, as well as the 14thcentury Rathaus, or Town Hall, decorated with murals depicting scenes from the Middle High German epic poem, the Nibelungenlied, believed to have been composed here. Lunch is included.

With 17,774 pipes, 233 registers, and six consoles, St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Passau is the largest organ in Europe. The organ consists of five separate parts requiring more than 74 miles of cable laid in the attic to connect them.

Day 2 Regensburg Today you will walk through thousands of years of history — as its many remarkable Roman, Romanesque, and medieval splendors attest, Regensburg has been a popular spot since the days of Marcus Aurelius and his Roman troops. On a guided walking tour, you’ll see the remains of the emperor’s old Roman Wall and Porta Praetoria, the 12th-century Old Bridge, the Dom St. Peter, one of Bavaria’s grandest Gothic cathedrals, and stroll through medieval Old Town, with its narrow lanes, elegant patrician houses, charming churches, and stone towers. Following lunch on board, we’ll tour Weltenberg Monastery, where you can taste 1,000 years of brewing expertise. With some time to explore on your own, you’ll find the city and its environs a delightfully easy — and rewarding — place to explore on your own. This evening, enjoy a Bavarian folk show on board.

Culture

Y REGENSBURG

When the laborers working on Regensburg’s Cathedral and Stone Bridge in the 12th century needed a lunch break, they headed to the Historic Sausage Tavern (Historische Wurtsküche) — as should you, if you want an authentic Bavarian treat. The house specialty is a caraway seed roll filled with fried sausages, home-made sauerkraut, and mustard — it’s gemütlich-licking good! During your free time you might stop in for a taste!

ing, the Imperial Rooms, and the famous library, housing more than 80,000 priceless volumes. Our guided tour will also take us by coach through the picturesque Wachau Valley, a UNESCO-designated landscape of rolling vineyards, fairy-tale castles, and ancient hilltop ruins and monasteries. Following our tour, we’ll rejoin the ship in Weissenkirchen and sail on to Vienna. Day 5 Vienna

history

Y SCHÖNBRUNN PALACE

On a tour of Schonnbrunn Palace you are literally following in the footsteps of some of Europe’s greatest luminaries: the emperor Franz Josef, Napoleon Bonaparte, even Mozart, who performed for the seven-year-old Marie Antoinette and the Empress Maria Theresa in the Hall of Mirrors here in 1762. The breathtaking sweep of Austria’s imperial legacy comes gloriously to life, as does its love of the baroque — with 1441 rooms in all, the palace’s opulence is matched only by the surrounding gardens and parks, offering the ideal setting to this magnificent UNESCO world treasure.

This afternoon, you have a choice of two Viennese treasures: join our guided tour of the Kunsthistoriches Museum, or Museum of Fine Arts, housed in a festive palatial building on the Ringstrasse that is a work of art in itself; alternately, you might decide to join a guided tour of Schönbrunn Palace. Day 6 Bratislava, Slovakia

"The folklore shows on the ship are the best! I wish we could take them home with us." — T & K Allen, CA

66

Alternately, you might decide to pass on the walking tour of Passau and set off on either of two offered full-day excursions, one featuring Mozart’s lovely alpine city of Salzburg and the other to the 13th century medieval town and castle of Cesky Krumlov, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the South Bohemian region of the Czech Republic. Day 4 Melk/Wachau Valley/ Weissenkirchen/Vienna From Emmersdorf, we head to Melk through the Wachau Valley. If you were a fan of Umberto Eco’s The Name of the Rose, you are in for a very special treat today — a visit to the 900-year-old Benedictine abbey that inspired the novel. Welcome to Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, an Eastern European gem of a city set between the Danube and the legendary Carpathian Mountains.

Poor Sisi! Although she did not return the passionate love of her husband,

Step back into the Middle Ages in charming Bratislava.

Day 7 Esztergom/Szentendre/ Budapest, Hungary From Slovakia we travel next into Hungary, Europe’s hidden jewel. With its exotic culture and cuisine, abundance of thermal hot springs and spas, and wealth of architectural marvels, Hungary is a traveler’s idyll. Get your first taste of Hungary in Esztergom, the original capital and seat of the Hungarian Catholic Church, before traveling on to the artists’ colony of Szentendre, a town that has been populated since the Stone Age. Today it is a popular spot for souvenir shopping, but a stroll through town will also reward you with countless treasures: beautiful old churches and homes, cobblestone streets, museums and galleries, and breathtaking views of the Danube and the tree-lined banks on the far side of the river.

With so much to see and do in Budapest, consider our three-day independent Finale featuring a stay at the famous Hotel Corinthia Budapest, with the services of your own concierge and a walking tour of the city. the Emperor Franz Josef, and resented the stifling atmosphere of the Habsburg court, Elizabeth, known as Sisi, reigned the longest of any Empress of Austria — 44 years, before she was assassinated in 1898.

While we lunch on board, we’ll cruise to our final destination, Hungary’s capital city of Budapest. Of all the gracious cities that line the Danube, it is Budapest that truly has the river at her heart, separating the two halves of Buda and Pest, which you’ll see on our city tour that takes in the highlights: St. Stephen’s Basilica, the Dohány Street Synagogue, the Hungarian National Museum, the Opera House, the Parliament Building, and the UNESCO-designated Castle Hill district, home to the glorious St. Matthias Church. After Fishermen's Bastion, Budapest's real-life, fairy-tale castle.

NUTCRACKERS

VISIT 8 CHRISTMAS MARKETS

One of the Christmas market’s most popular figures is the Nutracker, first developed around 1870, and a famous symbol of the Erzgebirge area south of Dresden.

Starting the last week in November and open nearly every day until a day or two before Christmas Eve, Germany’s Christmas markets are usually set up in the town or city center. In addition to being the best place to shop for traditional Christmas ornaments, gifts, lighting, and decorations, they offer the ideal opportunity to enjoy a hot cup of Glühwein and a bratwurst!

GLÜHWEIN

CHRISTMAS TREES

GERMAN STOLLEN

One of the most popular stands at the market is usually the Glühwein Stand, serving traditional mulled wine, made from red wine combined with spices such as cinnamon sticks, vanilla pods, cloves, citrus, and sugar. Ask for it with a “Schuss,” or shot or rum or liqueur, for extra warming power.

The first decorated trees were adorned with apples, white candy canes (symbolizing the staffs of the shepherds), and pastries in the shapes of stars, hearts, and flowers. Glass ornaments were first made in the Dresden region, around 400 years ago.

The Stollen, or Christmas cake, is one of the oldest and longest culinary traditions in German history, mentioned as far back as 1329, when one was given as a Christmas gift to a Bishop. According to legend, the Stollen’s shape is supposed to remind people of the baby Jesus.

1-844-462-6727

In addition to glass ornaments, exquisitely-wrought straw figures are also popular.

Christmas

TRADITIONS IN AUSTRIA

Rediscover old traditions and new delights in Austria and Germany's Christkindlmarkets — happy holidays, indeed!

ADVENT

“STILLE NACHT, HEILIGE NACHT”

Celebrating Advent is an important part of Christmas in Austria, and Advent calendars are a popular item at the markets, ranging from simple paper calendars to elaborate three-dimensional creations holding candy and toys.

Silent Night, Holy Night. one of the world’s favorite Christmas carols, was written in 1816 by Joseph Mohr, a young priest. Franz Zaver Gruber, a teacher and organist in the village of Anrsdorf, put the poem to music and premiered the carol on December 24, 1818 in St. Nicholas Church in Oberndorf, near Salzburg.

MUSIC BOXES

GINGERBREAD HOUSES

LEBKUCHEN

Music boxes have been a popular toy for hundreds of years; today you can browse hundreds of samples, all playing assorted music and Christmas tunes and decorated in a variety of themes such as angels, the Holy Story, the Nativity, fairy tale motifs, and more.

German children love to build “Witch Houses,” like the one in the story of Hansel and Gretel, with squares of Lebkuchen and lots of icing and sweets. Shop the market for the ingredients or buy one fully made up.

Lebkuchen, the traditional German baked Christmas treat similar to gingerbread, was invented by Franconian monks around the 13th century. They became famous in 1487 when emperor Friedrich III handed out nearly 4,000, all bearing his printed portrait, to the children of Nurenberg.
