ddressing the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) session (virtually) at the United Nations in New York on 17th July 20, on the theme “Multilateralism after COVID19: What kind of UN do we need at the 75th anniversary”, Coinciding with the 75th Anniversary of the founding of the UN, prime minister Modi retreated India’s call for a ‘reformed multilateralism’ in a post-COVID-19 world, which reflects the realities of the contemporary world. “India was among the 50 founding members of the United Nations immediately after the Second World War. A lot has changed since then. Today the UN brings together 193 member countries. Along with its membership, the expectations from the organization have also grown. At the same time multilateralism is facing many challenges today” Prime Minister Modi observed. We in this column have been repeatedly pleading for Reform in UN and restructuring of permanent members of United Nations Security Council. It would be a memorable moment for the Members of this world greatest organization if the reform is implemented and presented as a gift to the United Nations on the eve of its completion of 75 years (UN@75). One will agree with Former foreign secretary Vijay Gokhale that “Democracy is our greatest asset and the existence of our democratic state challenges Beijing consensus or model. It makes it ideologically difficult for the Communist Party of China to justify its model of non-elected membership. India represents the largest ideological existential challenge to China because of its vibrant democracy”. It is heartening to note that the US House of Representatives has unanimously passed an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), lambasting China’s belligerence against India in Galwan Valley. The NDAA amendment, moved by Congressman Steve Chabot along with Indian-American lawmaker Ami Bera , said that India and China should work towards de-escalating the situation along the Line of Actual Control. Passed unanimously by the House of Representatives, it said that the hostility of Beijing in and around disputed regions, such as the Line of Actual Control, the South China Sea, the Senkaku Islands, is of significant concern. The bipartisan amendment states Congress’ opposition to Chinese assault against India in the Galwan Valley on the India-China border and expresses its concern toward the growing territorial assertiveness of China. China has used the distraction of the corona virus to attempt to seize territory belonging to India, as well as to press its territorial claims in the South China Sea, it said. “India is a critical, democratic partner in the Indo-Pacific,” Chabot said in a statement after the House passed the NDAA amendment. “I am a strong supporter of our bilateral relationship, and I stand with India, and all our partners in the region, as they confront China’s hostile acts of aggression,” he said.“I am proud to be joined by Congressman Ami Bera, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Asia, the Pacific, and Nonproliferation, to bring this important amendment to the floor in a bipartisan manner,” he added We are indeed grateful to Mr. Steve Chabot and Mr.Ami Bera, Our sincere thanks also to other co-sponsors of the resolution Indian-American Congressman R Khanna and lawmakers Frank Pallone, Tom Suozzi, Ted Yoho, George Holding, Sheila Jackson-Lee, Haley Stevens and Steve Chabot and also Mr. Krishnamurthy for their support along with the entire Members of The US House of Representatives for passing this bill unanimously. — Pran Mohan Parvatiyar pmparvatiyar@gmail.com

In his welcome address he Quoted United Nations Secretary- General António Guterres message that the COVID-19 pandemic affects everyone, everywhere, but it does not affect everyone equally. It is deepening existing inequalities and vulnerabilities, particularly for women and girls. The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) projects that, if lockdown measures continue for six months with major disruptions to health services, 47 million women in low and middle-income countries may not be able to access modern contraceptives, resulting in 7 million unintended pregnancies. .

Survivor Dr. Nizamuddin Kotwal, Medicine practising in Solapur (Maharashtra) . I run a regular medicine clinic along with my wife Dr. Nisha Kotwal, a Gynecologist .On night of 5 June 2020 myself and my wife had mild flu like symptoms with body ache. In view of current scenario, we both isolated ourselves on the first floor of our residence and kept parents and kids on ground floor. I started giving her medication for same. She had high grade fever on 6th and 7th June which gradually reduced by 8th June. I only had body ache since 5th June which on 8th June turned into full blown myalgia and raging fever with chills and rigors. Temperature swung from 101-103.4 degree F on 9th,10th and 11th June. On 11th June I began having nausea & vomiting. I was unable to even tolerate water orally; that is when we decided to get admitted. in CNS Hospital, Solapur under Dr Vishal Gore, , I was given supportive therapy as befits a moderately symptomatic COVID infection. 2020 were absolutely uneventful and I felt relieved. On 17th June 2020 I had mild fever(100F) which came down with only single dose of Tablet Paracetamol 650mg The report came by 5 PM and all the markers were in thousands. To my horror, it was the dreaded CYTOKINE STORM. This was the most terrifying experience of my life. I could not breathe, I could not think and all I could see was my family, all alone without me.. I was shifted to Yashodhara Hospital ICU at 6PM. At Yashodhara my saturation went down to 85% off Oxygen, so was put on BiPap ( Non invasive ventilator) With BiPap I could finally breathe as the movement of my lungs and diaphragm got synchronized. I still couldn’t sleep, On 20th June at 5PM I was put on newly arrived HFNO machine @ 20 litres with humidifier, with this I was maintaining 97% saturation and PR of 80-90 bpm and finally got a restful sleep after 4 sleepless nights. My off O2 saturation improved marginally to 88%.On 21st June 2020, I was quite comfortable so Dr Yogesh reduced my HFNO to 15 litres & shifted me to a room .On 24th June 2020, the HFNO Machine was disconnected and finally after 7 long days I was breathing on my own maintaining 93% saturation. On 25th June 2020, I was suppose to do my “6 minutes walk test”, but by God’s Grace I managed to walk for 30 minutes without fall in saturation or tachycardia! On 26th June 2020,I got discharged from hospital with 95% saturation, Improving Chest X-Ray.

OTHER EARTH today is facing an inimitable crisis. COVID-19 is affecting lives and livelihoods across the globe. The pandemic has caused colossal damage with respect to nonpareil loss of human lives and challenged endurance for global economy. The crisis has obviously compelled distancing but induced intercontinental connectedness. In a crisis like this the global community is only as strong as the weakest link. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) help throw some light regarding the same. The pandemic and its effects have had a negative impact on many SDGs. Apart from affecting the health and wellbeing of people across the globe, it has led

to food insecurity, deep-rooted poverty, closure of educational institutions, reduction in jobs and slow economic growth. The World Bank estimates the crisis will push some 11 million people into poverty. UNESCO estimates that some 1.25 billion students are affected. International Laboure Organization (ILO) estimates some 25 million people could lose their jobs. The International Monetary Fund has shared preliminary estimates of economic impact at US$2 trillion. We must accept the fact that the crisis is in a way guiding us to prioritize our needs and to ensure no one is left behind. Governments, NGOs, businesses have raised huge sums of money in the shortest possible time to combat this pandemic. If we provide similar importance to the fight against poverty, hunger and climate change, we have the ability to make significant progress on sustainable development globally. While the global community is busy in ensuring maximum lives are saved, the focus on achieving long term goals (SDGs) is to be kept alive. In fact, focusing on SDGs will act as a guiding light in creating a new and better world order. ANNA DAN Conscience: Centuries before

ple. Survey was conducted to identify the locations in surrounding areas where they find shelter. Approximate everyday requirement of feed was assessed; total of 35,120 kgs. of dry fodder to cattle. World Blood Donors’ Day – (13th & 14th June): The need for safe blood is worldwide for critical medical interventions, maternal and neonatal care and emergencies of all kinds (natural disasters, accidents, armed conflicts, etc.) However, most low- and middle-income countries struggle to make safe blood available because donations are low and equipment to test blood is scarce. Globally, 42% of blood is collected in highincome countries, which are home to only 16% of the world’s population. Safe blood can be substantiated only by voluntary donors. These humans deserve high praise on 14th June, the World Blood Donor Day. Inspire more volunteers to raise foundational perception and encompass life-saving cause. In this context, ensuring social distancing, United Nations Association of Gujarat in alliance with Guru Gobind Hospital (GGH) Blood Bank, Jamnagar planned blood donation camp at Moti Khavdi and Jogvad on 13th and 14th June. Community was motivated to take up this cause with passion. An awe-inspiring response for the blood donation camp where more than 173 people of all ages and social backgrounds from many villages came forward to donate. Remarkably, heartening was to see

many women supporting the cause overcoming social barriers and this gesture was vividly appreciated. A Very Special dedication to the Warriors of our Mega Food Campaign in Ahmedabad. This good camp is not just a task, but an ultimate happiness to see people smile. Feeding *3,19,500 people in 31 days was a feeling that can’t be expressed in words. An experience where the human force got together to help each other survive. An experience that will always stay close to my heart, Chirnajiv Patel ( Member, UNA Gujarat)

THE NEED FOR SAFE BLOOD IS WORLDWIDE FOR CRITICAL MEDICAL INTERVENTIONS, MATERNAL AND NEONATAL CARE AND EMERGENCIES OF ALL KINDS (NATURAL DISASTERS, ACCIDENTS, ARMED CONFLICTS, ETC.) HOWEVER, MOST LOW- AND MIDDLEINCOME COUNTRIES STRUGGLE TO MAKE SAFE BLOOD AVAILABLE BECAUSE DONATIONS ARE LOW AND EQUIPMENT TO TEST BLOOD IS SCARCE.

HE INDIAN Federation of United Nations Associations (IFUNA) in collaboration with The Global Citizen Forum – Women’s International networking (GCF-WIN) organised a significant one hour webinar on June 12, 2020 on the subject “Global Women spearheading change” – under aegis of GCF-WIN’s global movement that seeks build female leadership across the globe and encourages society to go “Beyond gender”. GCF is a burgeoning body of people whose objective is to create ‘One World’-beyond gender, nationality, religion and boundaries. GCF events have been organized in Europe, Latin America, North America, Asia and the United Nations. And the Women’s International Net-

working, founded by Kristin Engvig, is an independent global women’s leadership organization. WIN models, develops, empowers and connects leaders in a feminine, authentic and global way. The webinar celebrated the success stories, vision and thoughts of women leaders in various sectors including politics, business, sustainability and wellness. The host, Dr BK Modi – Founder President of the Global Citizen Forum and Honorary President of World Federation of United Nations Associations ( WFUNA) shared the vision behind this unique ‘beyond gender’ initiative and also announced a mega event in the United Nations in 2022 on ‘leadership beyond gender’. “2020 is a landmark event for

This has opened up new possibilities for women leadership, thought and change.” The session was co-hosted by Ms Preeti Malhotra, Founder–Director of GCF and Chairman of Smart Bharat Group along with Mr Suresh Srivastava, Secretary General,IFUNA. In her opening address Ms Malhotra urged people to work towards a “more equitable world as the global stands on the cusp of an exponential future.” She urged women to drive the change that will define the future of humanity and create a world where, “when someone says the word ‘leader’, the first image that pops into your mind is not that of a man.” Among the several women stalwarts addressing this session was Ms Susan Stautberg, the former CEO and Chair of the Women Corporate Directors, the only global membership organization and community of women corporate directors; and current Operating Advisor of Atlantic Street Capital – a $ 1 billion hedge fund. Susan spoke about how the presence of women in key positions within corporate has been gradually increasing and cautioned against regressive attitudes that continue to govern the relationship between women in work in several nations across the globe. A key aspect of the webinar on June 12 was Wellness, particularly female wellness. A specially curated sub-session in this webinar featured renowned preventive healthcare physicians, Dr Pamela Smith and Dr Shabnam Das kar; health entrepreneur, Ms

The Webinar Participants Anu Acharya; wellness expert, Ms Namrata Bagaria and sustainability expert Ms Minni Jain. All speakers touched on various aspects of personalised healthcare including the impact of genetics, the roll of epigenetic and the latest healthcare tools available in the market that can help identify various bio markers and aid in preventing disease. Wellness is a key aspect within the ‘beyond gender’ movement as latest developments in the wellness industry have thrown open several new domains which offer a Greenfield opportunity for female leadership. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Suresh Srivastava mentioned that, “Even after 75 years, no woman has adorned the office of the UN Secretary General. This needs to be changed and India can lead this change. The landscape of India’s development is dotted with examples of strong women and we need to strengthen this further. ”The webinar culminated with an address by Chief Guest Smt Mridula Sinha – the former governor of Goa and a special invitee of IFUNA. She shared her inspiring story as a female politician in India and how she was able to break the glass ceiling in the world’s largest democracy where women continue to be under represented. And also by a brief address by Ms Kristin Engvig, the CEO of GCF-WIN who invited participants to join the beyond gender movement and build the discourse on building female leadership as we lead up to the mega event in the United Nations in 2022. Media advisor, IFUNA, Shri Deepak Parvatiyar proposed a vote of thanks to the host and the participants in the webinar.

SPEAKING ON THE OCCASION, MR SURESH SRIVASTAVA MENTIONED THAT, “EVEN AFTER 75 YEARS, NO WOMAN HAS ADORNED THE OFFICE OF THE UN SECRETARY GENERAL. LEAD STORY INDIA-CHINA SKIRMISHES

WAS IT PLANNED – ACCIDENTAL OR

SPONSORED? P.M.Parvatiyar & Suresh Srivastava FTER THE 2nd Informal Summit at Mamallapuram between Chinese president Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi it was expected that India –China relations will improve and the tension on the border will reduce. It was reported that a consensus between both leaders had reached at the two informal summits of Wuhan (China)-2018 and Mamallapurm (India)-2019, not to allow "differences" to become "disputes". In spite of that both sides lost precious lives of their soldiers in a skirmish at Galwan valley on 15th June 20. After nearly three weeks of tension and war like situation and hectic diplomatic and military level meetings and talks, Chinese troops are ultimately withdrawing from Monday 6th July 20 from the Galwan Valley and the Pangong Tso in Ladakh and the stand-off sites. Though this is an important step in the disengagement process on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) between India and China, there will have no bearing on either the Army’s alertness levels or its preparations for longhaul deployment in the barren mountainous

terrain of Ladakh. It will have to be prepared to deal with the new reality of the disputed border where blood was spilled last month after more than five decades. The clash, which saw the death of 20 Indian and an unspecified number of Chinese soldiers, has left scars which are too fresh to be healed. As the two sides start repeating the disengagement process, the Indian side is doubly cautious in its insistence on verifying every single step in detail before moving to the next step. ”A cautious approach is always needed in spite of National Security Adviser Ajit Doval insistence on a “full and enduring restoration of peace and tranquility talk with Chinese foreign minister Wang Yion. As per reports, a four-kilometer buffer zone has been created between Indian and Chinese troops in Ladakh; both sides are moving tents, troops and vehicles back to their own side of the Line of Actual Control (LAC); the exercise is being verified by drones. At Pangong Tso, the withdrawal is thin because the Galwan and Shyok rivers are in spate, but physical verification will keep continuing. Whether the full withdrawal process takes a few days or weeks or months, but the fact remains the Chinese side seems to have blinked. Two months after Chinese troops intruded across the LAC, they are going back, empty-handed. The one thing the Chinese are surely taking back is the ill-will of a fellow friendly Asian power, which has gained today many more friends than Beijing during this confrontation. It is a matter to think and probe, who came down on China’s side as it decided to

aggressively cross the LAC claiming its neighboring country territory as once owned during the Qing dynasty? Even those most indebted to China, such as Laos in Southeast Asia (where the Chinese are building a high-speed railway to connect to China) and Djibouti in East Africa (where the Chinese have built a military base), didn’t come out in open support of the dragon. In contrast, India had lined up some of the world’s quietest as well as most voluble players, some of them powerful members of the United Nations Security Council. The Americans President Donald Trump had said that “China’s aggressive stance along the India-China border fits in with a larger pattern of Chinese aggression in other parts of the world… Trump was right. Only last week, Russians and Chinese got into a social media spat when some Chinese media claimed ownership of Russia’s eastern city Vladivostok, saying it had once been part of the Qing dynasty’s Manchurian homeland but was annexed by Russia when China lost the Second Opium War to Britain and France in 1860. Earlier, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had described the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) as a “rogue actor” and accused the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) of escalating “border tensions with India.” Certainly, the US is having a massive tiff with Chi-

na over trade and the fact that Beijing didn’t let on early about the corona virus pandemic thereby causing untold harm to America – but the Ladakh border clash has been much more than a casualty. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has also backed Narendra Modi’s doctrine on China banning 59 apps owned by Chinese technology companies. More countries are also banning. He has stated, “Chinese apps are something that the trump administration is looking at taking action on”. The US has moved two aircraft carriers into the South China Sea that amounted to a significant show of strength, insisting on freedom of navigation. While Pompeo called external affairs minister S. Jaishankar, promising help. As for the Russians, they agreed to speed up “certain missiles and bombs” during the recent visit of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to Moscow, when a full review of the bilateral defence relationship took place. Significantly, according to an anonymous official source, Russia had quietly turned down the Chinese request not to sell arms to India, even though Russia depends quite a bit on arms sales to China to shore up its own GDP. The CCP’s mouthpiece, People’s Daily, took to Face book to send China’s message to Russia, but the same was ignored. That also speaks in volumes about the personal equation of Modi with Putin.

It shows Chinese have now realized how this aggressive behavior has globally harmed them politically as well as economically. It will take a considerable time to recover. It is said that the foremost reason for this is the high level of mistrust between the two armies caused by multiple incidents on the border over the past nine weeks. But the question is whether this was a mere simple localized skirmishes of anger at core commander level or was it a planned one with the intention to grab Indian territory under China expansion plan. Or was it done on behest of some anti Modi group to destabilize and remove him? It is a serious matter. In the interest of the nation it is necessary that this apprehension should be also probed and truth should be made public and the mist is cleared soon in the interest of the nation . However, whatever may be the reason, this has harmed Xi Jimping reputation not only internationally but also in his own country. On the other hand Narendra Modi’s leadership quality at home and statesmanship is being appreciated worldwide.

or the time being Nepal Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli has been able to save his chair with the help of China. That means he will further continue to pursue his policy to damage thousands of years old Indo –Nepal fabrics of “Roti- Beti”. Around two thousand five hundred years ago ‘Gautam Buddha’ (sidhartha), the founder of Buddhism, born in Lumbini in Nepal, traveled to India to get enlighten at Bodh Gaya. Earlier than that during “Treta Yug” Raja Janak of Janakpur (Nepal) could get a suitable groom Sri Ram of India for his daughter Sita. This tradition of “Roti-Beti” is still continuing across the 18000 km. border of Nepal and India, including a former union minister , Government of India Dr.Karan Singh marrying to a Rana family of Nepal. are dependent on income from across the border. It is common for traders and wage earners to spend the morning at work across the border of either India or Nepal and return to their homes in the evening. The marriages and social get together across the borders are also every day affairs The name "Nepal" is first recorded in texts from the Vedic period of the Indian subcontinent, the era in ancient India when Hinduism was founded, and the predominant religion of the country. In the middle of the first millennium BCE, Nepal is intertwined with the culture of India and a little bit of Tibet. The centrally located Kathmandu Valley is intertwined with the culture of IndoAryans, and was the seat of the prosperous Newar confederacy known as Nepal Mandala. By the 18th century, the Gorkha Kingdom achieved the unification of Nepal. The Shah dynasty established the Kingdom of Nepal and later formed an alliance with the British Empire. The Nepalese Civil War in the 1990s and early 2000s resulted in the establishment of a secular republic in 2008. "Nepal is not only a landlocked country, but also India locked as it is surrounded by India from the three sides. The situation can be vulnerable. If India retaliates on the misadventure of Nepal, it will have a huge economic and social impact on that country” K P S Oli under the influence of China has failed to realize these facts to keep himself in power. It is said that the present Chinese Ambassador with whom he is having a very good relation prevailed upon him to get cleared a Constitution Amendment Bill that endorses the coun-

Thus creating a troubled phase in Nepal-India relations, specially at the time when India and China are engaged in confrontation at Galwan Valley King Mahindra convincingly assured India way back in the 1960s that a road built to connect Nepal with Tibet had only “developmental significance and no strategic significance at all”. In the 1980s, King Birendra annulled a contract that China had won under a global tender to build the 210-km Kohalpur Banbasa Road closer to the Indian border, after India raised concerns over security. King Birendra handed the task over to India. According to the accounts of Bishwabandhu

As such, the village has now been annexed to Tibet, an autonomous region of China. As reported by Nepal-based newspaper, Khabarhub, the aggressive stance of Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli towards India has been an eyewash to suppress the events in its own territory. Even though Rui is still included in the map of Nepal, China has removed the boundary pillars to legitimise its occupation, the report says. The village which consists of about 72 houses, has reportedly been under siege, owing to the negligence and apathy of the Nepalese government and its officials. According to the Land Revenue Office (Gorkha), it has a record of revenue collected from the residents of the village of Rui. Thapa, Nepal Home Minister in 1962, King Mahendra “gave the Kalapani location to India” on Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s request following India’s setback in the war with China. According to Punya Prasad Oli, a former Director General of Nepal’s survey department, King Birendra had asked him not to make an issue of the Kalapani dispute in the 1970s.China, worried about the combined presence of India, US and EU in Nepal and their influence on internal politics, began increasing its presence and investment in Nepal, targeting tourism, post-earthquake reconstruction, trade and energy, with a message that its interest in Nepal is no less than India’s or its allies put together. Although political parties backed by India in the 2005-06 movement continue to be in power in Nepal, they have visibly become more and more distant from New Delhi. The Maoists, who are now part of the ruling NCP headed jointly by Oli and Prachanda, have remained under Chinese influence and started damaging India-Nepal relation. “ Nepal present Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli's act of “unilaterally” amending the map of his country by including Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura in India's Uttarakhand has caused “irreparable damage” to Indo-Nepal ties which no Nepalese leader can undo in future,”said senior Congress leader Dr Karan Singh. what is termed as “roti-beti ka rishta” between the two countries. This is because his wife is from Nepal's reputed Rana family and the erstwhile Jammu Kashmir royal has invested a lot in the relationship between the two countries. “The two countries are closely associated. There is free movement of goods and people. About 40,000 Nepalese soldiers are serving in Indian armed forces. Their diplomats and civil servants train with ours. Many Nepalese freely work and study in India and are grossly dependent on India. So, this confrontation will have its repercussions. We looked at Nepal as an ally and they have rudely thrown this (amendment) on our face. This is not the correct way. Map doesn’t change things and realities on ground,” Dr Singh added. While terming Oli’s move as “irreversible confrontational posture”, the former Cabinet minister and the ex-ambassador of India to United States said that it was a big diplomatic lapse by India too . Two major questions that crop up in the context of bilateral context. Why did China’s clout increase to this level when India apparently calculated that the monarchy’s exit will increase its own influence on Nepal? And does India have any institutional allies left in Nepal, like the monarchy and Nepali Congress like in the pre-2005 phase? The Nepali Congress was formed in India in the early 20th century and many of its leaders participated in India’s freedom struggle, thinking an independent and democratic India would help establish democracy back home. The party, despite consistently taking the lead role in the movement for

As per historian Ramesh Dhungal, both the villages of Rui and Teigha which are located in the northern part of Gorkha district have been lost due to the negligence of the Nepalese authorities in fixing the boundary pillars. He added that Rui was neither lost by Nepal in war nor was it the subject of any special agreement with Tibet. He said, “India’s border is accessible. People walk around it. Therefore, border issues with India are visible to all, but the situation of Nepal at the northern border with Tibet is extremely bad.” Rui villagers still pay land revenue to Nepal:The President of Chumubari Rural Municipality ward number 1, Bir Bahadur Lama, conceded that even though the people of Rui had deposited their share of land revenue to the Nepal government, yet they had

a multi-party democracy with constitutional monarchy, was often branded “pro-India” by Communists given their close ties with Indian National Congress and socialists. However, following the 12-point agreement, the Nepali Congress was forced to accept the lead role of Maoists (Communists) in the impending political change, and agree to dispense with constitutional monarchy that it had all along said represented “forces of nationalism” and “symbol of unity in diversity”. During major face-offs, three trade embargos since the 1970s and sensitive security issues, the Kings of Nepal and the Indian Prime Ministers, directly or by using back channels — including Indian royalty and even shankaracharyas when Nepal was a Hindu nation — have succeeded in bringing the crises to an end. But over the years, India’s focus on Nepal appears driven more by security concerns and threat perception than by promoting a soft power-based approach like in the past. During the current spell of dispute, India has once again begun ‘valuing’ common civilization , cultural, historic and people to people ties. India’s old allies are regretting having aligned with the Maoists. “Nothing could have been a more erroneous judgment of India in 2006 than those Maoists were the emerging forces of the people and bringing them to the centre stage of Nepali politics and power would consolidate democracy,” a senior Nepali Congress leader said. “I think it is about time that we reviewed

become Tibetans following the encroachment by China. Khabarhub reported that pillar number 35 was demarcated as the border between Samdo and Rui village. However, during the restoration work of the pillar no. 35, the village came under Chinese occupation.

the 12-point agreement and restore our lead role in Nepali politics rather than being seen as follower of the Maoists,” said Gopal Man Shrestha, one of the eight leaders who signed the 12point agreement. Besides the monarchy, Nepali Congress and in the recent past Madhes parties to some extent, the only other institutional ally that India has had is the Nepal army. The chief of each national army has enjoyed the status of Honorary General of the other side, on a reciprocal basis since 1950. When Oli refused to accept India’s invitation for a state visit in April 2006, during a blockade, it was the armies of both sides—especially at the then chiefs’ level –that did the homework for lifting it. Though Oli has succeeded in getting the Constitution Amendment Bill passed by the country’s parliament concerning the controversial new map,by playing nationalist card, it is to be seen how far the people of Nepal will approve this confrontation? Will the social, cultural ,religious as well as day to day economic activities and interaction of common people of Nepal with Indians across the border will prevail or just a Chinese sponsored political dispute over an issue of boundary? A massive protest has erupted in Nepal as anger over new Citizenship rules. It is an indication of the mind of common Nepalese towards their relation with India. The Nepalese people are matured enough to protect their heritage, culture, tradition and social environmental fabrics. Prime Minister Oli will understand it and shall not allow it to precipitate further. — Pran Mohan Parvatiyar

For many years it remained an object ‘to chat with and to chat about’ in the family ; at least ,till the day it flew away from the let- loose cage exit . ■ I, having crafted a special cage, soon we were in the company of Lovebirds. It is a small genus of parrot. They have short, blunt tail feathers, unlike budgies (parakeets). Social and affectionate, the paired birds spend long periods sitting together. It is important to use wide cages as large as possible.Subsequently , with our frequent ‘stays out’; with heavy hearts, we parted with the birds. ■ Years later, back home in ‘Kirti Cottage’, Dalhousie , I could not resist the desire to bring home another parrot. Lack of toys and of companionship may lead to boredom, stress, and psychological or behavioral problems (nervousness, aggression, featherplucking, screaming, depression). ■ Their longevity is considered a positive trait as it

reduces instances of the loss of a pet. Some large cockatoos, amazons, and macaws have very long life spans, with 80 years being reported, and record ages of over 100. Even lovebirdsand budgies, life spans up to 15–20 years. ■ As a group, parrots are unique; all have short, hooked bills, flexible muscular tongues, an upright stance, strong short legs, and clawed feet, having their first and fourth toes pointing backward, which they often use like hands. Cockatoos have a preferred "footedness" analogous to human handedness. Most species are left-footed using their left foot to eat, but a few species favour their right foot. ■ Parrot species that are commonly kept as pets include conures, macaws, amazon parrots, cockatoos, lovebirds, cockatiels, budgerigars, caiques, parakeets, and a few others. The rose-ringed parakeet or the ringnecked parrot, have been prized for their beauty and ability to talk.Beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder, so in terms of appearance, there can be no winner. Temperaments and personalities vary even within a species, just as with dog breeds. ■ Conures belong to a long-tailed group of the New World parrot subfamily. ■ The budgerigar is a long-tailed, parrot usually nicknamed the budgie, or in American English, the parakeet. ■ Amazon parrot is the common native to the New World^. Most Amazon parrots are predominantly green. ■ The caiques are species of parrots, relatively small and stocky, with a short, square tail and very bright

colors. They can live up to 40 years. ■ Toucans have many advantages over parrots as pets. They do not scream or make loud noises. Since their beaks are not powerful, they cannot bite hard and, in fact, have difficulty squeezing a grape. "The toucan is a tribal symbol that is carved on totem poles by native tribes. ■ Cockatoos on average, are larger than other parrots; however, the cockatiel, the smallest cockatoo species & is easiest to maintain. The movable head crest, which is present in all cockatoos, is spectacular in many species. ■ Macaws are long-tailed, colorful, New World^ parrots. All macaws are parrots, but all parrots are not macaws. They are witty and easy to train. Macaws are usually bigger than parrots, with larger beaks and bodies. They include the largest of all parrots ; though the smallest member of the family, the red-shouldered macaw, is no larger than some parakeets. They are popular as companion parrots, are hard-headed and stubborn birds; extremely intelligent, and try to outsmart their humans. ■ A macaw's facial feather pattern is as unique as a fingerprint.Macaws and their feathers have attracted the attention of people throughout history. However, the most important components of most parrots' diets are seeds, nuts, fruit, buds, and other plant material. A study reveals that parrots and macaws use the clay licks as a source of cobalamin, vitamin B12. ■ Because of their acidity, most veterinarians suggest not offering fresh tomatoes to parrots, as they could potentially cause ulcers. Onions and garlic should also be avoided because the chemical compounds they contain may cause anemia. Mushrooms must all be avoided due to their very high oxalic acid contents. Freshwater must be available at all times. Nowadays, it is commonly accepted that the caffeine in coffee is toxic to birds. ■ ‘The Green Scene’ of the Delhi Golf Clubhas published‘a parrot’s dance of joy’.
