Traditional indian villages

housing clusters

The concept for my space is villages. the relevance to my project lies in the fact that like the villages, I want my building to act as a close knit community that is united and aids in the growth and development of each other. The people in most villages are involved in a common primary acvity which is the focus of their lives. People have different needs as a whole and these spaces are spread around the village. the zoning of these regions plays a major role in the way a village works and this is something i aim to achieve in my building. My building, like a village, needs to have the community as the center of focus and all other acvies revolve around it. The building should aid in building lasng relaonships .

zoning The exisng rectanglar shape of the building is retained to preserve the historic elevaon. A contrasng interior architecture is created . This contrast helps in pedestrians nocing the space and being drawn inside. A central zone is created to symbolise the unity and growth. Around the central tower the other programs ae zoned .

MATERIALS

One of the unique features of this building was the brick walls. Concrete was selcted to complement the brick. Since the focus of this project was nature, a neutral material scheme was opted. The materials are rich in texture to add dimensions to the space when light hits it.

This building is predominantly a Hydroponic center. Hydroponics is the growing of plants without soil, using mineral nutrient solutions in a water solvent in a controled wnvironment. My vision for this building is for it to act as a mueseum for hydroponics. The building is ideally located in a corner making it visible in the neighbourhood. Programs such as a market place, play center , library, restaurant and bar have been included in order to draw crowd into the building. Once they get into the building the hydroponics center takes the center stage and is visble throught the atrium. An informaon center is provided for further informaon. The idea behind this concept is to use theis building as a tool to educate the neighbourhood on the nacent concept of Hydroponics while acng as a community center. 27

We oen overlook the potenal of unused spaces around us. These spaces when idenfied can contribute significantly towards developing an engaging environment. Industrializaon and urbanizaon have caused a lot of changes in a city. Due to the rapid influx of people there was need for infrastructural development. Now with the brimming populaon in cies every parcel of land is premium. Moreover, this has led to the dire need for open public spaces. Urbanizaon has led to the formaon of a privazed life with no interacons with different people. Our infrastructural development has added to the congeson. There are three major waterways in chennai-cooum, Adyar river and the manmade Buckingham canal. The cooum River almost divides the city into half. The adyar river divides the southern half of the city into two. The historic Buckingham canal runs parallel to the coast almost through the enre length of the city. There are also othe small canal and nullahs . These waterways are an integral part of our city. The poor state of these waterbodies gives out a very negave image of our city. The Adyar river , about 60 years ago , was a public space with lot of acvies.

synopsis 35

The banks of the river was busy with people selling commodies, gathering to watch boang compeons and children coming to play. The contrasng present state is quite appalling. There is great Potenal in Developing the river and its banks as it runs through many neighbourhoods and can thus help in connecng them. Reviving these spaces will assist in bringing the community together and result in creang a sense of belonging for the people and an identy to the place.

aim Reacvang a dead waterfront along the city to create an acve and lively public Waterfront to help bring people together and create an identy to the city. Creang an opportunity for public Interacon along the waterfront, a place for the community to come together. Join the cies like Sydney and Bilbao, where redesigned waterfronts helped change their image and put them on the map.

Velachery , originally known as Velalar seri meaning agriculturist colony. Velachery lies in the southern outskirts of chennai city. The place is about 13kms from chennai central. The region is predominantly residenal with increasing commercial developments. Major porons of the present day Velachery were originally lakes. Velachery is geographically surrounded by IIT madras in the north-east ,tharamani in the east , Adambakkam in the northwest. As more and more IT parks are emerging on the old mahabalipuram road, IT and working-class people are seling in Velachery.

The Lakefront as a space for the community, which will help in tying the community together and create a sense of belonging and subsequently increase the quality of the neighbourhood. I envision this place to be the acve part of the neighbourhood and act as the focus. I aim to do this by creang a gradual transion onto the area around the lake, increasing accessibility and creang acve zones based on the user need. 38

The project was a 3 bedroom apartment with an office in front. The brief was that the private living spaces would be kept separate to ensure privacy for the family due to the high number of guests entertained at home. The private funcons were therefore pushed to the first floor to create that barrier. It was also a requirement that the house be laid out following basic vaastu guidelines, with the interiors creang a well-balanced blend of Indian and contemporary design. We aimed at designing the staircase as a important feature in the building. But also funconing as a light well.

We wanted to create a sophiscated calming interior in an Indian contemporary style. We developed a minimalisc concept for storage throughout the house to give a spacious uncluered feel to the house. We used warm colours with wood and stone based textures and jute finished texle for curtains to go with the mood lighng. We created spaces incorporang the clients interests of travel and art which highlight their souvenirs from around the world.

We created a custom table with raw Indonesian wooden table top with legs cladded with traverne marble. The chairs had warm yellow jute fabric to go with the overall theme. The wooden flooring was elevated to highlight the area. The lighng was customised to the length of the table with a neutral material. The sheer curtains run into the dining room and e the whole place together.

60

bedrooms

We decided to create dierent styles for each room. The client wanted very minimal furniture, which we worked with. We decided to create an area of interest of a slightly dierent nature for each room. One was an accent wall with slate cladding, another a picture wall and another a set of shelves.

1 The exisng slab was demolished to create a more porous connecon between the floors. As a stylisc and conceptual decision, the reinforcement bars from the demolion were used as a handrail for the staircase and connued to e the 3 floors together. The resulng feature became one of the most iconic in the bar.

66

We tried to create pops of colour to balance the overall industrial aesthec of the space. This was brought in the roof through neon light tubes to help create a psychedelic vibe.

2 We designed the bar counter to stand out in the enre bar, by creang a contrast with the metal and colours. A mild steel frame was suspended from the roof and acrylic sheet was fixed in the middle with bright lights inside to create the effect of a floang. The bar counter is the main source of lighng for the ground floor to immediately grab the aenon of the user and directly draws the crowd. We made a conscious decision to create a feature breaking out of the wall, with niches to showcase unique boles.
