Critical Appraisal Webinar Series Part 1: Study Designs AMSA SCOTLAND There is a lack of exposure to academic medicine in medical school. Therefore, AMSA Scotland conducted an event on 13 November – 4 December 2020 via Zoom, called “Critical Appraisal Webinar Series Part 1: Study Designs”. This event was an informative session for medical students on the basics of study designs, which is an important concept to be aware of. Important points that were covered include the strengths and weaknesses of various study designs (e.g. RCTs vs observational studies).

My name is Cyena Chaza Anak Kutiang, a third-year medical student at the National University of Malaysia (UKM). Born and raised in Kuching, Sarawak, I had the privilege to be surrounded by people of different ethnicities and cultural backgrounds, which given me great interest to further interact and build friendships with those that are unlike myself. Moving forward, I indulged in AMSEP at local and national levels, which was how I first came to value the philosophies of AMSA. As a Regional Chairperson now, I envision bringing AMSA Malaysia to more(all) and with the support of an amazing national team, I am confident that we will be able to achieve that. #roadtowardsgreaterAMSAMalaysia What I liked most about AMSA International is how passionate the IEB is in all that they do. I acknowledge and I appreciate their efforts in bringing AMSA to greater heights. Any message for the next tenure? Learn from yesterday. Enjoy today’s journey. Be hopeful for a better tomorrow. Cyena Chaza Anak Kutiang Regional Chairperson AMSA Malaysia

I'm Mubarka, a final year student here hoping to graduate by the time this gets published :p AMSA has given me a reason to fall in love with my profession even more. Any time I felt medical school was getting too exhausting, I knew there would always be something here that could help me recharge without feeling guilty for the time spent not studying. I thought I would have extremely limited cocurricular opportunities but being a part of this organisation opened a whole new chapter for me. From being just a member to making my way up to the post of Regional Chairperson, I have learnt so much and made friendships that last me a lifetime for which I will always be grateful. Glad to have been a part of this team, 10/10 recommend :D Mubarka Bushra Regional Chairperson AMSA Pakistan

Hi everyone, I’m Ernest, RC of AMSA Singapore. What I liked most from AMSA International are the people, people and people. The people in AMSA International are always so energetic, motivated and encouraging. It is a wonderful place for those who like to challenge themselves and work in a highly dynamic team. Any message for the next tenure? Do not panic. Ernest Lim Regional Chairperson AMSA Singapore

I am Jimmy, Regional Chairperson of AMSA Taiwan Tenure 2020/2021, and I’m currently a third year medical student of China Medical University of Taichung, Taiwan. I am passionate in public affairs and organisational activities. Speaking of leisure time, I enjoy outdoor activities and Netflix movies. EAMSC 2019 Thailand was my first conference in AMSA and it was really a blast for me. During the kaleidoscopic journey in AMSA, I realised the untapped potential of medical students to shape the world around us, to inspire and to be inspired. Any message for the next tenure? AMSA is definitely a platform where friendship is forged, knowledge is disseminated and action is initiated. Grasp those opportunities, unleash your unbridled passion, and explore the whole Asia-Pacific and beyond. Viva AMSA! Pin-Chun Chen Regional Chairperson AMSA Taiwan

Greetings, People of Tomorrow! My name is Helena Arnetta Puteri, but people usually call me Arnetta or Netta as the Regional Chairperson of AMSA Indonesia 2020/2021. To our dearest ECs and RCs, thank you for such a fulfilling tenure! It makes me proud to become a part of AMSA International in a tenure that is filled with tremendous growth. I hope you all know that all your sacrifices, late night meetings and hard work did not go unnoticed. Well done! Hope to be able to meet you all in person soon. As Winston Churchill once said, “Success if not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” Despite the mountains conquered and the uphill battle, let’s continue to work hard to bring AMSA to even greater heights. Helena Arnetta Puteri Regional Chairperson AMSA Indonesia

I am Priyansh Nathani, currently serving as a medical intern in Mumbai, India. As a result-driven professional with management experience, I believe in transformational leadership for the betterment of an organisation. I'm passionate about working towards Global Health and Global Surgery, Sexual Rights & Human Rights, Strengthening Healthcare Systems in LMICs, AI in Medicine and Sustainable Development. Personally, I love to socialise in person over social media. I prefer to spend my spare time in research or perhaps watch some good TV series with good food, beverages and company. Novel ideas and experiences shared transnationally really did widen my perspectives while looking at a problem or even while having a solution. I appreciate the liberty given to the chapters to grow while always supporting in times of need. I liked AMSA International that always being professional, approachable, and helpful while being so friendly and understandable. I loved how inclusive AMSA International has been in terms of executing and discussing ideas. AMSA International can execute highly impactful multi-national projects with great international partnerships, collaborative research studies, have better brand visibility with NGO status soon. To always remain as the most friendly organisation ever for medical students. Priyansh Nathani Regional Chairperson AMSA India

I am Dr Fahmida Faiza, currently working as the Regional Chairperson of AMSA Bangladesh in the tenure 2021. I have started my journey with AMSA international in 2019 as a National Director of the Asian Medical Students' Exchange Programme from AMSA Bangladesh. Since then, I have found AMSA International very helpful and informative regarding every work in a friendly manner. AMSA International has helped me to develop many professional skills. Any message for the next tenure? I am hoping to get another friendly and helpful tenure in the days ahead. Fahmida Faiza Regional Chairperson AMSA Bangladesh

We like that the team bonding is improving and that all the Executive Board members are very helpful and friendly. They also constantly check up on us via text or Facebook message. I find it very helpful with the constant support, especially when reminding about deadlines. We wish to collaborate more with the other AMSA UK bodies (e.g. England and Scotland) for some events but it might be difficult due to new restrictions and lockdown rules in the UK. We wonder if AMSA International could teach us ways to increase membership participation especially for small members like us. Ai Win Chan Regional Chairperson AMSA Northern Ireland

We like the EC from AMSA International! They are always there for us! We wish to grow up with confidence and courageous! We wish to grow more roots (more members and medical schools) and more branches (more partnerships locally and beyond)! We wonder if we can have more fun together? Ruby Yen Regional Chairperson AMSA Macau

:

We like that the AMSA International makes major changes in its whole system this tenure. I appreciate that we are starting to utilise our national officers for a more well-rounded and better represented projects. We wish that all AMSA chapters be as active as they can be. I wish AMSA International look into those chapters that are inactive and find out what is the problem. In that way, we grow together as an organisation. We wonder how much more AMSA International can improve. Let’s not be afraid and let’s be open to look into other organisation’s ways and learn from them. Terence M. Lapenas Regional Chairperson AMSA Philippines

We like your great supports which make it possible to expand our circle of “friendship.” We also wish to inherit this warm atmosphere and we wonder if we can share more time together across the border of any chapter. Ayaka Nanri Regional Chairperson AMSA Japan

We like the incredible networking opportunity that AMSA International provides. We wish we could participate in more AMSA International events (share ideas for the improvement of your AMSA Member.) We wonder if AMSA International would be able to provide extra incentives for people to join the AMSA family, such as discounts to medical textbooks/resources. Since our society is young and small, getting sponsorship is quite a challenge for us. Elbert Edy Regional Chairperson AMSA Scotland

We like the family of AMSA International, how it brings all the medical students close, helps to bring out our inner talents and helps us gain more exposure and knowledge. AMSA International is our family made by our bonds with each other. We wish to expand our AMSA Nepal family further and we wonder if we could include more members in AMSA International to make it an even bigger family. Dipesh Regmi Regional Chairperson AMSA Nepal

To be honest, this year, AMSA Korea has not participated well in AMSA International activities. I will try my best to encourage our members to participate more in these meaningful AMSA international activities as soon as everything gets normalised. Jongsun Lee (Justin Lee) Regional Chairperson AMSA South Korea

We like the tight-knit nature of AMSA International. They are very open-minded and work very hard! We also wish to expand our chapter and also incorporate more AMSA International roles within AMSA GB-ENG, and we wonder if AMSA International is willing to give a talk on what AMSA International is and explain some of its “open” roles to keen AMSA GB-ENG members. Jom Bhumitrakul Regional Chairperson AMSA England

Five tablets for feelings betrayed and neglected. Two doses to arrest personal pressures and release inner melancholy. One bottle for a life seemingly defunct, incomplete, and crestfallen. The counter goes on and on until she faltered away from her consciousness and was subjected to a gastric lavage. This is the only way my good friend, Lay*, thinks she could escape from all depressing emotions that drown her leading to her anti-depressant prescriptions and psychotherapy every week. And recently, this too, has become a familiar scenario reflecting the current picture of those undergoing a developmental conflict on their bout to explore independence and a sense of self, to temporarily unmask pain and deal with coping especially during this time of pandemic. Astray, like nowhere to be found, she was. For months, Lay had no choice but to lock herself inside her mini apartment, far from her loved ones and family in another island, and gone seemingly incognito into someone she was not because of the taxing virtual learning stresses amid the 7 month long national community quarantine and counting. In spite of the looming raising of that white flag in the middle of medical school and the close-to-cutting-pulsations off, she diverted herself and found refuge to a green space. Greens breathed vitality to Lay’s barren and humdrum disposition. Caged in a studio-type nook on forced home lockdown due to community restrictions, variegated foliage seems to wrap her in comfort as caladium, spider plant, and peace lilies basked on top of her study throne while sansevierias embrace her sweet-dream cradle. To top it all, three little subspecies of pothos strewn in the whole room with her tiny little ‘bean’ as she calls it, the neon pothos which is her most favourite - signs of life in a country on a perturbing and extended pause.

This ingenuity to nurture green babies became the newest movement of Filipinos amid the pandemic, which also paved way for petulantly tagging the so-called “plantitos” and “plantitas”, a hybrid of the word plant and tito (as in uncle) or tita (aunt), to be born. Plant parenting rampantly rose to scene as a means to while away excess time of doing nothing at home, but to some plantitas like Lay, this wave brought about a peculiar display of environmental awareness that also cultivates a calming atmosphere towards self-care, healing, and promotion of her mental well-being.

“If they are thriving, it shows how I am able to provide good care for them. Only when I am able to take care of my own needs will I also be able to address what others need. And if I can do so, then it reflects balance in my time, focus, and priorities. Afterall, a sound mind boils down to balance,” Lay happily shared. To her, while medical students are bombarded with loads of requirements and thick readings on top of synchronous virtual conferences, seeing plants thrive actually gives a feeling of reassurance that one’s care has significant effect on others – “your care gives life, thus you matter,” she added. Houseplant mania made waves on social media immediately when the ‘plantdemic’ hit the country by storm as people made trends flaunting their fresh, indoor jungles which was subsequently emulated by many. Personal testimonies account that plant parenting promotes a sense of calmness, safety and relaxation. To med students who turned into instant indoor jungle groomers, plants deliver good air quality, ease eye strains, and lighten mood environment while studying and attending online classes thereby reducing feelings of anxiety and virtual fatigue.

Withering Mental Health Across the World

According to a World Health Organization (WHO) survey, COVID-19 pandemic has taken a toll on the mental health of millions of people across the Western Pacific region and around the world which disrupted the delivery of mental health systems in 93% of countries while the demand for it continues to increase rapidly. The disease was identified to be stressful for people as fear and anxiety about a new disease and what could happen can be overwhelming and can cause strong emotions in both adults & children. In a systematic review (Xiong J. et.al., 2020), symptoms of depression were assessed in 12 out of 19 studies. The prevalence of depressive symptoms ranged from 14.6% to 48.3%. Many risk factors were also identified to be associated with symptoms of depression which highlighted that females tended to be more vulnerable to develop the symptoms of various forms of mental disorders during the pandemic, including depression, anxiety, PTSD, and stress, as reported in their included studies. After it swept across the world, the unprecedented effects of the pandemic have instituted efforts to mitigate the impact of the virus’ spread through physical distancing, which for one, resulted to changes in behavioural patterns. This “lockdown”, that mandates people to stay at home to further break the chain of transmission, caused likewise a shutdown to the day-to-day routine and functioning of an individual.

The Philippines, having already one of the highest rates of depression in Southeast Asia even before the COVID-19 pandemic ensued, affected more than three million Filipinos as per report by WHO. This unfortunate reality was also validated by the rising monthly hotline calls regarding depression as noted by the National Center for Mental Health (NCMH) ranging from 80 calls before lockdown to nearly 400 around September this year. Mental illness was also identified by the National Statistics Office (NSO) as the third most prevalent morbidity in the country where around 88 cases of mental health problems for every 100,000 Filipinos have been found out from Department of Health (DOH) records in 2005. In the advent of a pandemic, nevertheless, this is indirectly mirroring the true extent of the mental health problem in the country. From WHO’s health definition, good health includes psychological and spiritual wellbeing, and one way to promote this health aspect based on recent trends is through (urban) gardening, which is one of the most popular ways where people can connect with nature globally. About 1 in 3 adults or almost 120 million in U.S. engage in gardening as a hobby regularly. In other countries where surveys of gardening have been done, the numbers were similar, including Japan (32 million or 1 in 4), the U.K. (23 million), as well as Sweden and New Zealand. Studies have shown that regular gardening enhances overall general well-being, life satisfaction, and cognitive function since contact with nature is seen to be a cost-effective, alternative preventive therapy. The depression, stress, anxiety, and loneliness brought about by social isolation measures can develop inevitably, however cultivation of ornamental plants may be an option to aid in enriching one’s mental health and the wellbeing of various populations.

Sprouting Green-fingers To environmental and design psychologists, having plants at home can reduce stress levels and help one mentally refresh from different kinds of exhaustions, adding that the colour green itself is linked to improved creative thinking. Participating in plant care activities, therefore, was found to reduce stress, improve depressed mood, and strengthen social engagement.

Plants connect with people and the cultivation of indoor plants becomes another option into getting closer with nature. While on social isolation, we tend to spend indoors most of the time and in the setting of multigeneration families in one roof, ventilation rates may be reduced. Thus, the quality of air must be maintained in order to create a stress-free environment, hence, green spaces for indoor plants will be of much value during these times not to mention that plants remove pollutants and maintain safe breathing environments as per our basic science knowledge tells us.

Seventy-seven studies were also conducted in one systematic review in U.S., Brazil, the U.K., South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and the Netherlands about the impact of gardening on health and well-being published in 2020 British Medical Journal. Studies investigated interventions ranging from viewing gardens and taking part in gardening activities which consequently brings us to presently what is known as horticultural therapy. Horticultural therapy (HT), or sometimes known as social and therapeutic horticulture, entails the engagement in gardening or other plant-based activities used to improve both physical and mental well-being of an individual that is recognised as an effective form of therapy since the Egyptian era. It is believed that when people engage in HT, they take on the role of caregiving. By tending to these green babies then, people receive an increased sense of responsibility or purpose, just as what my friend Lay relatedly revealed, as “it increases self-esteem while calming the soul.” To date, while majority is still engulfed by the anxiety of the uncertain times, priority needs to be given to the promotion of mental health and self-care especially to medical students at that. Sometimes, we may opt to remain silent as it deems peaceful and comforting in solitude, however during these plantdemic moments, we must realise that there is no time to stay dry. When channeled to meaningful actions, the depressing feelings in the middle of these trying times will surely give birth to a beautiful purpose. Know that no matter who you are, someone is capable to water you and nourish you, listen and care about you, just as how you need to regulate watering of your own plants in order to flourish and grow.

“I actually talk to my plants because I read a scientific journal that showed the benefit of talking and music to plants. In this pandemic where most people are isolated, I find it calming knowing that there are other organisms that thrive in my environment (let’s not forget plants are living organisms as well),” a few inspiring thoughts Lay shared which helped her in coping. Now as we encounter more Lays in our lives, may we remind them that the negative emotions they’re feeling is like a bud, sprouting and temporary, but soon can potentially blossom into an amazingly viable succulent when poured with all the care it deserves. Just like plants, if you take good care of your own emotions, you’ll also see yourself grow and bloom. For no tablets, capsules, or overdoses can heal the mind more than a plant thriving on sight, reminding that someone’s there ready to care and be cared, to live so as to give life. Are you also a full-fledged plantito or -tita, or still budding into such role? Be mindful of each other because yeah, it’s always better when we #GrowTogether. *Lay – not her real name

The Love Anniversary

Written by:

Fata Imadudda’wah

Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Padjadjaran AMSA Indonesia

Putri, a young woman in a smart casual outfit, was stranded in the largest mall in Bandung. Her good friend Tio had left in the middle of their lunch when a police officer requested his cooperation for a case. She, not privy to the details, was left alone without a companion. She sipped her tepid coffee, tapping mindlessly on the black screen of her phone. It was dead, much to her chagrin. She could not rely on Tio and his fancy compact car to return home. A dead phone removed car-sharing services from her options and left her with the city bus and angkot, the public transportation minivans. Both alternatives left her sighing and wavering. The bus was comfortable, yet left her needing to walk a fair distance home. The angkot stopped closer to home, but she wasn’t sure the slowness was worth the cheap fare. “Putri?” Then, she heard it. An oh-so-familiar voice uttered her name. Putri closed her eyes. She hoped so badly for it not to be him. The man she saw with her brown eyes open shattered said hope. “Raja.” Her best friend who loved her. Worse, her best friend she rejected just yesterday. The charming man smiled and sat across from her. “I thought you had a date tonight.” “Not with you.” “I doubt you had one, to begin with.” He tapped the table, clean but for one

cup of coffee and a half-eaten sandwich with a toothpick flag. “It’s none of your business.” Putri pushed her chair back. “What if I want it to be?” “No means no, Raja,” she sighed. “There are others interested in you.” “You’re the only princess for my king,” Raja’s smile widened. “We are meant to be.”

“Don’t be hasty.” he flashed the same knowing smile. “Let me drive you home. Your grandfather will be worried if you are late.” The words caused Putri to halt. Something felt off. Something she was not sure of, but which was waiting there like a dead log. She turned to face him. The handsome man never failed to beam whenever their eyes met. They liked the same bands. They both loved making scrapbooks. Raja was fashionable, friendly, and warm all the time. He was her ideal man.

Putri frowned, “Stop.” Raja chuckled, which only brought her further headache. Raja. Her well-spoken, fashionable, considerate friend. A person who shone like the moon in a starry sky. However, the scope of her opinion stopped at just that. A great person. A good friend. There it stopped. When Putri tried to pay, the cashier gave her a knowing wink. “Your boyfriend already paid.” Raja, still seated, waved the toothpick flag and smiled when their eyes met. Putri’s response was arctic-cold. She left the café without so much as a word or a glance to the red flag. “Not even a ‘thank you’ for the favour?” His voice came grating from behind. Putri quickened her steps, but his long strides passed hers effortlessly. Raja blocked her path. Left, right, his body followed her movement. “Move away.” She pushed him aside, but Raja persistently followed.

He was a crystallisation of everything she liked. He was perfect. Too perfect. “Why?” she asked. “Why are you so persistent?” He quirked his eyebrows. “We are perfect for each other.” Putri crossed her arms. She stared back, clenching her jaw. Raja broke into a smile. “I knew it from our very first meeting. A rainy Tuesday evening, 20th of October three years ago- “ “Hold on. Three years ago?” Something buzzed in Putri’s head. The log. “Yes. You dozed off on my shoulder in that angkot, still in your school uniform. You woke up with an apology and got off in front of the station.” Raja sighed, dreamy and longing. “Your soft breath, your gentle expression, your embarrassed apology, they haunted my nights for days… I just knew. No one could make me feel like that but you.”

Her surroundings blurred into the void. The log was moving; she was sure of it. There was only her, Raja, and the log floating with the current of her mind. Raja’s words boomed like a waterfall. They drowned the café’s music in the distance. Chatters of a group of friends going around them. The trickle of a fountain on the floor below. Nothing was there but his voice, laced with yearning and nostalgia. “Finding you was a journey. I only knew your face and voice. Not a name to call or a school to visit. I waited in front of the station for a whole week. You only came on Tuesday, when I started to lose hope. The surge of warmth I felt from that second meeting was like no other. “I guarded you home that evening; everything was easier from there.” Raja chuckled. “Your friends gave me your social media accounts. I’ve been watching you from afar since. I know your daily activities. The music you listen to. Your hobby. The styles you like. Your celebrity crushes. I remember every single detail just for you. “Do you remember? Every Tuesday, your desk always had a red rose on it before you arrived. Like in your favourite novel, Love Will Tell.” Yes, she remembered. How could she not? It brought attention to the whole class. It even started a trend of confessing with roses throughout the school. Even then, she never received a confession; not even a letter. Eventually, she no longer paid it any

attention. Still, the rose always came. Every Tuesday morning, without fail, throughout her 11th and 12th year. Raja’s eyes remained on her. The log was no longer half-submerged in the water. It showed its true nature, brimming with infatuation, desire… and justified obsession. Putri involuntarily shuddered. She was wrong. It had never been a log, but a crocodile laying still. And now, the beast had opened its maw. “I stayed behind one year to wait for you. Then we chose the same major. And we started spending time together.” The smile on Raja’s face grew. “I purposefully turned in a sick letter on the first day of orientation so I can ask for your help to catch up with work. It was easy to make an excuse when I rented the apartment next to yours.” “Stop.” Raja stepped forward. “We had the same classes. We worked on so many projects and assignments together as a result. Every moment only reminded me how much I love you, my princess. And I know you love it, too.” “Stop it.” Her eyes inadvertently were drawn to the pen in his breast pocket. A sleek black pen with a silver P on its body. It looked exactly like the pen she lost in her 11th year. Her plea fell on deaf ears. “You love the way I dress, the way I speak, the way I make you laugh. You feel safe and comfortable around me. You feel loved.” Putri staggered back. The closer Raja

got, the more she wanted to run away. Eventually, her back hit a wall. She could no longer see the attraction in his warm smile. Her whole body recoiled inside out. She was a deer screaming when the crocodile bit its neck. His voice, pleasant like sunshine, continued to beam. “Three years had passed since our first meeting. And today is the 27th of October, the day of our second meeting.” Raja went down on one knee, revealing something in his palm. “Happy third anniversary, my princess!” In his hand was a yellow gold ring embedded with a marquise diamond. Putri recognised that ring. It was the ring described in Love Will Tell. The same gold ring she said she wanted to wear to her wedding in the 11th grade. Putri reacted in the only way she could. “No!” She slapped his hand away. The ring flew off his hand, sinking into a fountain below. Raja attempted to hold her hand, but Putri slapped him viciously on the face and ran off. The scene caused quite a disturbance, with a small crowd watching discreetly from the side. A sympathetic man approached Raja, who was bleeding profusely from his nose. “You okay, man?” Raja laughed brightly. “Oh, nothing worthy of concern.” He nonchalantly wiped the blood off and shook his head, smiling. “Just an endearing quarrel between lovers.”

Checklists to Life: 12 Lessons I Learnt the Hard Way

Written by:

Dr Avi Singh Government Medical College, Amritsar, India (Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Punjab) AMSA India

1 Regret “Regret is born to kill your present potential.” There will always be million possibilities to how you could have done something differently or chosen something else, and none of them would necessarily be wrong. Each choice has a price and comes with its baggage of roses and thorns. There is only one way to end up smiling at the end of it all; you take a decision, hope for the best, and make do with what you get.

2 Balance “Life is always in a dynamic equilibrium.” Life might seem dull on days and the most beautiful blessing on others, but often, it stays in the grey zone. Every day is a constant effort to make our souls happier; but there are times, no matter what, we lose in the face of circumstances, not in our hands. It is Ying and Yang, two sides of the same coin. The sorrow is what gives the joy its meaning. But what is most important to understand is that this equilibrium is dynamic. Every day is not perfectly balanced; but we attempt to remain close to it, so that we never drift away too far, in order to return.

3 Crisis “Relax. It is not the end of the world.” There will always be unpredictable situations you can never be prepared for. Not everything can be predestined, but it is a human tendency to panic in such instances. But often, the solution to the crisis lies right in front of our eyes. The panic not only just blinds us, but also aggravates the potential consequences. Next time you end up in an accident (your fault or someone else’s), just relax. Breathe. And now you are ready to find the calmest way to handle the situation.

4 Contentment “Count your blessings.” It is a human reflex to desire evermore for things. But a conscious effort to just enumerate what you already possess, even once a day shall make you feel the richest person there can be. Just a thought, what good is all the money in the world if you cannot spend it well enough? (And well, finances are just a tiny fraction of what being rich means).

5 Self Exploration “Find a purpose. It is food for your soul.” The world is a beautiful place with a million opportunities to offer. Even you do not know what talents were engraved in your genes the day you were born and the millions more you could learn; art, music, or travelling? The only way to know is to get out of your cocoon. Trust me, you need it, your purpose is food for your soul.

6 Failure “To err is human.” Every new step you take, you are bound to falter. You do not, for even one second, have to be ashamed of it, but carry every failure as a proud scar. Every mistake is an opportunity to learn something new and add a feather to your cap. Repeating it is what should raise a red flag.

7 Gratitude “Appreciate. It is a beautiful habit.” We somehow evolved into a society that prefers to talk behind backs and envies the qualities others possess. But a human can only do so much; we, as a species, emerged to have magnificent qualities no individual could possess. It is only natural, different people will excel in different spheres of life. Try appreciating someone on their face if you find them charming or chivalrous. Trust me, your soul shall feel happier that day.

8 Communication “An art of necessity.” Getting people to listen has become a difficult task, especially when most people have a lot to say. But let us try to accept the situation this way, it is much more the responsibility of the speaker to hook onto its audience than just theirs to pay attention. If they are not interested enough to listen to you, you probably need to up your game. The world is a stage, and you present as if it is your only chance.

9 Mindfullness “You are where your mind is.” Being mindful means to be in the present moment, calmly acknowledging and accepting one’s emotions and sensations. And there is not a better therapeutic technique invented for your soul.

10 Stress “It is all in your head.” The fear of failure naturally stresses us out. That is an evolutionary advantage that helped our species survive this long. But that does not mean failures are unnatural. The stress rather must be overcome. No human is perfect. Accepting your flaws is the first step towards being a better, less messy person.

11 Individuality “The road less taken is not necessarily the wrong one.” Every human born is unique with their own set of vices and virtues. Right and wrong ways to do things are subjective. Accept yourself, make your place in the world because the world already has too many of the other kinds.

12 Legacy “Your learnings: pass them on. It is a cycle.” All that you learnt in life; by yourself or by someone’s virtuous act of teaching, that you thought you could never payback. Because that is your legacy, your learnings, meant not just for you but a million after you as well. And there could never be a more virtuous act than teaching–once you share a lesson, you both have it now.
