city of makassar

Makassar is the provincial capital of South Sulawesi Indonesia. It is the largest city on Sulawesi Island in the terms of population number and sixth largest city in Indonesia after Jakarta, Surabaya, Bandung, Medan, and Semarang. From 1971 to 1999, the city was named Ujung Pandang, after a pre-colonial fort in the city, and the two names are often used interchangeably. The port city is located on the southwest coast of the island of Sulawesi, facing the Makassar Strait.

Manner

Salam

Similiar to handshake, a mandatory in meeting other people you’re having business with, even if you don’t recognize who they are, to show that you welcome them. Most of the time, Salam is also equal to greetings

Hands Preference As the largest Muslim population, Indonesians, may it be Muslim or not are accustomed to using the right hand when passing something to someone or reaching someone for handshake or any other purposes

Speaking Tone Softly gentle but clear is a wide preference when speaking in public or to individuals, but it depends on which part of Indonesia. Eastern part sepaks a little higher tone than usua but still they don’t mean any rude, it’s just a habit from their cultural life

Calling someone To address someone, it’s a good choice to call them by their social titles, and a mandatory to call older people by Pak (Man) or Ibu (woman) which then can be added by their profession or any other titles.

Offer First

daily table

When starting to dine, it would be best to offer people the foods even if you’re paying together, it is to show you put a person’s satisfaction above yours

Passing Foods

The use of term ‘permisi’ or excuse me is a mandatory when passing food, apart from telling people to take the food you’re holding, it’s also a respect to whoever space the food went through. Not saying excuses will result in yourself being seen as a rude person.

Chewing and Drinking

No sound is a must, you have to chew your food in a closed mouth and drink slowly to respect other eater on the table

Mubazir

The food on your plate must be finished before you leave the table, you’ll be seen as a wasteful person when you leave anything on you plate or glass, it’s called ‘mubazir’. Exception if you don’t eat certain things (allergy or spicy foods), then you could tell the people you’re dining with so they wouldn’t mind.
