INSIDE OUT VICTORY BOOGIE WOOGIE

Victory Boogie Woogie, Mondrian’s unfinished masterpiece created in 1942-44, has come to be regarded as not merely the high point of his oeuvre, but also as a dazzling icon of non-figurative art in the twentieth century. Although Mondrian did not live to give the painting its title, it is known that he regarded it as a development of his earlier work. The work was acquired by the Dutch government in 1998 and has since been on permanent loan at the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague. Despite its landmark status in art history, Victory Boogie Woogie has never been studied in detail. This pioneering survey tracks the minute detail of the creation and physical appearance of the painting, delving into historical sources, conservation history and microscopic analysis of the paint surface and below.

The History of a Love-Hate (1939-2008) Conjuring up all the glamour of the event, Jungen recounts the history of the Cannes Film Festival from an American perspective surveying the complex interplay of talent, money and corporate clout. He traces the growing influence of the Hollywood studios on the festival’s rise to the key film event. Case studies of films (including The Birds, Easy Rider and The Da Vinci Code) and of the creation of stars such as Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sharon Stone, profit from the author’s experience of visiting the Cannes Film Festival over more than twelve years.

Improvising Cinema This spirited volume explores the history and diversity of improvisation in the cinema, including works by Jean Renoir, Jean-Luc Godard, and Nobuhiro Suwa. Gilles Mouëllic examines improvisational practices that can be specifically attributed to the cinema and argues in favour of their powers as instigators of unprecedented forms of expression. Improvising Cinema reflects on both the permanence of attempting improvisation and the relationship between technology and aesthetics. Mouëllic concludes that preservation becomes even more invaluable in the case of improvisation, as the creative act exists only within the brief time span of the performance.

Gilles Mouëllic is professor of film studies at the University of Rennes 2 in France.

Television as we know it is irrevocably changing. Several publications have dealt with its shifting condition, but few have discerned what its transformations mean for the discipline of television studies. Is television really in crisis, and should we invent new theoretical concepts or are the old ones still relevant? The authors take up diverse case studies, from nostalgic programming on broadcast television to YouTube, from tell-sell shows to public television art of the 1980s.

Spectacle and the City Chinese Urbanities in Art and Popular Culture China is urbanising at an unprecedented speed. How is the Chinese city visualised in art and popular culture? The visions of the Chinese city that this essential study explores are not taken as merely mirroring ‘reality’: on the contrary, they are part and parcel of the construction, destruction and deconstruction of that ‘reality’. As such, these imaginations are enmeshed in the social, material and political realities that produce Chinese cityscapes. Including Singapore and Hong Kong to bring the full resonance of the adjective ‘Chinese’, this erudite work brings together world-renowned scholars such as Ackbar Abbas and Chua Beng Huat, as well as leading cultural critics like Ou Ning.

“The book is a substantially original contribution to our knowledge of contemporary Indonesian politics and to the study of comparative political parties. Its originality lies in the presentation of new facts about political parties in Indonesia and in the analysis of those facts within a theory, also in part original, of the relationship of parties, particularly local party branches, to democratic consolidation …” — Bill Liddle, Ohio State University

As elsewhere in the Islamic world a stricter adherence to Islam has gained strength in Indonesia. Does the image of Islam in Indonesia as a model of moderation still hold? It is a topic of debate in Indonesia itself and abroad. This book is a reflection of this discussion. Besides contributions focusing on the specific characteristics of Indonesian Islam others deal with such diverse topics as Salafi groups and their propaganda, radio stations, Muslim transvestites, the pioneering work of Muslim feminists, and the debate about rules of inheritance and divorce.

“This timely book addresses the issue of the moderate nature of Indonesian Islam and presents a picture which confirm as well as contradict this image, thus showing the complexity of Islam in Indonesia.” Dr. Nico J.G. Kaptein, Leiden University

The Institutionalisation of Political Parties in Postauthoritarian Indonesia

In the recent past, the Indonesian brand of Islam has been held up as a model of moderation and tolerance for other Muslim nations. This book is a reflection of the open debate on whether this view still holds. Some of the contributors focus on the specific characteristics of Indonesian Islam and their social and political implications, while others present case studies.

Islam in Indonesia

The Institutionalisation of Political Parties in Post-authoritarian Indonesia: From the Grass-roots Up provides detailed examination of how much the local party branches of Partai Golkar, Partai Demokrasi Indonesia Perjuangan, Partai Amanat Nasional, and Partai Keadilan Sejahtera in Malang (East Java) have institutionalized since the end of New Order era (1966-1998). Based on extensive fieldwork and observation, this book provides a new bottom-up perspective on how activities, administration and membership of each party has changed, and why some parties have more developed organizational prowess and stronger institutional base than others.

The Institutionalisation of Political Parties in Post-authoritarian Indonesia › Ulla Fionna

Indonesia’s democratisation has provided its political parties with the freedom to develop their organisational prowess after the suppression of the New Order era (1966-1998). This book provides the first detailed examination of how the local branches of four large parties have since evolved and why some parties have strengthened their institutional base better than others.

Northeast Migrants in Delhi Despite burgeoning interest in Northeastern India, little attention has been given to the thousands of migrants leaving the region for the cities in search of refuge, work or education. The case histories in this interdisciplinary study reveal an alternative view of contemporary India. The migrants covet the employment opportunities created by India’s embrace of globalization; yet they also experience racism, harassment and violence. Writing India Anew Indian English Fiction 2000-2010 This groundbreaking study assesses the genre of Indian English fiction in the first decade of the twenty-first century. Some of the most prominent scholars in the field, including Rimi B. Chatterjee, Bill Ashcroft and Shirley Chew, explore a range of themes that extend from the re-mapping of mythology and history to reassessing the globalised India of today. Ultimately, the contributors contend that the current body of work in Indian English fiction can no longer be dismissed as derivative, or even as mere postcolonial compensatory national allegory.

Tales of Transit Narrative Migrant Spaces in Atlantic Perspective, 1850-1950 This rich volume casts new light on the great transatlantic migration movements. These have been studied from the perspective of the sending and receiving societies, while not much research was devoted to what happened in between. The authors move these in-between places to center stage. Drawing on a variety of archival sources as well as travel writings, fiction and memoirs, they highlight the complex rituals of engagement and disengagement involved in transatlantic migration.

Contemporary Culture New Directions in Art and Humanities Research Are the humanities still relevant in the twenty-first century? In the context of pervasive economic liberalism and shrinking budgets, the exigency of humanities research for society is increasingly put into question. This volume claims that the humanities do indeed matter by offering empirically grounded critical reflections on contemporary cultural practices, thereby opening up new ways of understanding social life and new directions in humanities scholarship. NATO’s Humanitarian War on Yugoslavia This illuminating study describes the genesis of the contemporary doctrine of humanitarian intervention. It is the first comprehensive analysis of Western policy towards the Balkans from the late 1980s on. Though scholarly, the book will also appeal to a wider audience interested in world affairs. George Szamuely is senior research fellow at the Global Policy Institute of London

Hiding Making — Showing Creation The Studio from Turner to Tacita Dean Until now, authors have concentrated on the function, meaning and representation of the artist’s studio in a specific period, a nation or even a single medium such as painting. Such case studies fail to address questions of continuity within the given theme. This inspired volume regards the studio as the crucible of philosophical reflection on some of the most fundamental questions confronting the artist: the nature of the art object, the role of process and materials, and the relationship of the artist to the world beyond the studio walls.

The Lute in the Dutch Golden Age Musical Culture in the Netherlands 1580-1670 Amsterdam University Press amsterdam studies in the dutch golden age

The lute’s cultural impact throughout the Dutch Golden Age can be compared to that of the piano in the 19th century. It was the universal instrument for solo music-making, as well as in ensembles and to accompany singers, mainly associated with the social elite the aristocracy and the prosperous burghers. This richly illustrated book is the first to showcase famous and obscure lutenists, professional musicians and amateurs, the lute music in books and manuscripts, the lute makers and the international lute trade, while also exploring the place of the instrument in the Dutch literature and art of the period.

This illuminating study offers a comprehensive analysis of the rural habitation in the northern provinces of the Roman empire. Transcending the traditional studies, the author traces developments in the organisation of settlement space and house building, drawing on fieldwork from the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and France. Thanks to the broad geographical and chronological framework, he sheds important new light on both local and regional patterns, turning the much-studied phenomenon of the Roman villa into a focal part of a more complex development. ARCHAEOLOGY / HISTORY OF MEDICINE

Amsterdam’s Museum Vrolikianum was famous amongst the nineteenth-century scientists all over Europe, who came to wonder at its five thousand specimens, ranging from curious stillbirths to human skeletons – healthy or diseased – and all kinds of exotic and not-so-exotic animals. Recent scholarly attention has brought this exceptional collection back into the limelight. With its wonderful photographs, this book is certain to extend that renewed interest to an even wider audience.

The Universal Art of Samuel van Hoogstraten (1627-1678)

Painter, Writer, and Courtier Samuel van Hoogstraten, one of Rembrandt’s most succesful pupils, was also a scientist, poet and playwright. This inter disciplinary volume examines his theory of art and his writings, the role of art in his social network, his contacts in Italy and Britain, as well as the links with the art of his master, Rembrandt. Bringing to the fore hitherto unknown works, the authors, including Celeste Brusati, Paul Taylor and Jan Blanc, demonstrate how art, literature and science were interrelated in the Dutch Golden Age. Thijs Weststeijn is associate professor in cultural heritage studies at the University of Amsterdam.

The proposed volume of collected essays, which will surely appeal to a broad readership, is most welcome not just for its subject matter but also for its original interpretations and impressive range of perspectives and approaches.(..) Thijs Weststeijn is an outstanding, rigorous researcher and an original thinker who has more significantly than anyone else advanced the study of Samuel van Hoogstraten. Perry Chapman, professor of art history, University of Delaware

These inspiring and thought-provoking proceedings complement recent monographic publications on Samuel van Hoogstraten. (…) An important contribution to the history of knowledge in the early-modern Netherlands.

Negotiating the Danube-Oder-Elbe Canal in a Troubled Twentieth Century Jiří Janáč

Beginning in the 1920s as a project to bring Central Europe closer together, the Danube-Oder-Elbe Canal attracted a great deal of attention throughout the twentieth century. Although planned almost exclusively on Czech territory, it promised to create an integrated waterway system across the continent, linking Black Sea ports to Atlantic markets. In return, the landlocked Czechoslovakian state would have its own sea connections. The construction finally began in 1939 as part of the Nazi Grossraum plan. After the fall of the Nazi Germany, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe returned to the idea of a panEuropean waterway network. Although never completed, the project has remained on various agendas and has attracted vast resources throughout the twentieth century.

Physical Safety A Matter of Balancing Responsibilities Physical safety is a core task of government, to be held accountable for hazardous substances, food safety, flood protection, spread of infectious diseases, and the risks involved in new technologies. This timely volume argues that a distinction needs to be made between incidents, damage, risk and uncertainty. In addition, the authors recommend that the central focus should be on the ambition of good governance. They also suggest that considering safety from the perspective of damage offers a useful framework for reassessing the distribution of responsibilities. The authors are members of the Scientific Council for Government Policy (WRR), an independent think tank advising the Dutch government.

Resources for our Future

Key Issues and Best Practices in Resource Efficiency Drawing on years of research into material scarcity and resource efficiency, the authors clarify the main ecological constraints related to the use of a wide range of resources such as water, industrial and construction minerals, and biotic resources. They present an analysis of the international trends shaping the geopolitical world order in which high resource prices and supply disruptions threaten economic security. Over twenty inspiring best practices from a variety of industrial sectors cited here demonstrate that innovation and entrepreneurship can result in substantial improvements in resource efficiency. The perspectives of the general population, of the victims and of the perpetrators are all examined, but above all those of bystanders.

Over the past decade, public services have come under increasing pressure to perform like private-sector organisations. This study demonstrates that professionals have much leeway in coping with changes caused by IT developments, distributed knowledge and more demanding public which have all created new pressures on public services. The authors conclude that rather than demanding more autonomy and space, public service professionals need renewed and workable professional standards. Migration Patterns after EU Enlargement This insightful volume presents new research on migration from Central and Eastern Europe since the EU enlargements of 2004-2007. Case studies on Polish, Romanian, Hungarian and Latvian migration to the UK and Germany, the two major destination countries, highlight the multifaceted nature of transition, whether in the form of labour migration, short-term mobility or return migration, pointing towards future migration trends and setting guidelines for further research.

Surveying Ethnic Minorities and Immigrant Populations Methodological Challenges and Research Strategies

Mónica Méndez is a survey methodology specialist at the Sociological Research Centre (CIS) in Madrid.

What are the special problems involved in surveying immigrant populations and ethnic minorities? How can we ensure adequate representation of these growing groups in general population surveys? This book is the first to address these challenges in a systematic way. Experiences from eight Western countries, involving more than a dozen surveys, are used to explore difficulties in designing these types of surveys and some of the choices made to deal with them. The rich array of cases covered gives rise to valuable lessons, from local and national surveys, from well-funded surveys and those with limited means, and on a wide variety of topics ranging from politics to health. Joan Font is a senior researcher at the Institute for Advanced Social Studies (IESA), National Research Council (CSIC), Córdoba. Mónica Méndez is a survey methodology specialist at the Sociological Research Centre (CIS) in Madrid. “Even survey methodologists and researchers who are not directly concerned with immigration as such will gain from reading the book and keeping it as reference.”

Howard Schuman, University of Michigan

“This book is a must read for students and researchers who take serious the real technical and methodological challenges in surveying ethnic minorities and immigrant populations.”

Marc Swyngedouw, University of Leuven

“An excellent review of different methodological challenges in survey research on migrant populations … a good introduction to survey research on migrants for researchers and students alike.”

Albert Kraler, International Centre for Migration Policy Development

Gender, Migration and Categorisation Making Distinctions between Migrants in Western Countries, 1945-2010 Who is a refugee, who is family and what is difference? Twelve eminent scholars analyse how those distinctions have applied in countries such as France, US, Turkey, Canada, Mexico, the Netherlands, Sweden and Denmark, and how they were justified in policies and public debates, taking into account countries of origin and setlement, economic climate, geopolitical situation, as well as gender, class, ethnicity, religion, and sexual orientation of the migrants.
