Victory Boogie Woogie, Mondrian’s unfinished masterpiece created in 1942-44, has come to be regarded as not merely the high point of his oeuvre, but also as a dazzling icon of non-figurative art in the twentieth century. Although Mondrian did not live to give the painting its title, it is known that he regarded it as a development of his earlier work. The work was acquired by the Dutch government in 1998 and has since been on permanent loan at the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague. Despite its landmark status in art history, Victory Boogie Woogie has never been studied in detail. This pioneering survey tracks the minute detail of the creation and physical appearance of the painting, delving into historical sources, conservation history and microscopic analysis of the paint surface and below.

Negotiating the Danube-Oder-Elbe Canal in a Troubled Twentieth Century Jiří Janáč
Beginning in the 1920s as a project to bring Central Europe closer together, the Danube-Oder-Elbe Canal attracted a great deal of attention throughout the twentieth century. Although planned almost exclusively on Czech territory, it promised to create an integrated waterway system across the continent, linking Black Sea ports to Atlantic markets. In return, the landlocked Czechoslovakian state would have its own sea connections. The construction finally began in 1939 as part of the Nazi Grossraum plan. After the fall of the Nazi Germany, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe returned to the idea of a panEuropean waterway network. Although never completed, the project has remained on various agendas and has attracted vast resources throughout the twentieth century.

The contributors to this thoughtful volume survey current Dutch research on the persecution of the Jews in the Netherlands during the Second World War, and recent developments in the historiography of the subject. The perspectives of the general population, of the victims and of the perpetrators are all examined, but above all those of bystanders.
Over the past decade, public services have come under increasing pressure to perform like private-sector organisations. This study demonstrates that professionals have much leeway in coping with changes caused by IT developments, distributed knowledge and more demanding public which have all created new pressures on public services. The authors conclude that rather than demanding more autonomy and space, public service professionals need renewed and workable professional standards. Mirko Noordegraaf is professor of public management at Utrecht University. Bram Steijn is professor of HRM in the public sector at the Erasmus University Rotterdam.
