Discovering the Dutch (new edition)
On Culture and Society of the Netherlands What are the salient facts about the Netherlands? This volume tackles the heart of this question through a number of themes that run through Dutch culture, history and society. From the Randstad to the Dutch Golden Age, from William of Orange to Anne Frank, Discovering the Dutch deploys a series of charming vignettes written by academic experts in order to address historical and contemporary issues such as immigration, tolerance, and the struggle against water, as well as issues of culture– painting, literature, architecture and design among them. Emmeline Besamusca lectures in Dutch culture at Utrecht University and the University of Vienna. Jaap Verheul is associate professor of history and director of the American Studies program at Utrecht University.

G. Geltner
Flogging Others Corporal Punishment and Cultural Identity from Antiquity to the Present Corporal punishment is often considered a relic of the Western past, a set of thinly veiled barbaric practices largely abandoned in the process of civilization. As G. Geltner argues, however, the infliction of bodily pain was not necessarily typical for earlier societies, nor has it vanished from modern penal theory, policy, and practice. To the contrary, corporal punishment still thrives today thanks to its capacity to define otherness efficiently and unambiguously. Challenging a number of common myths and misconceptions about physical punishment’s importance over the centuries, Flogging Others offers a new perspective on modernization and Western identity. G. Geltner is Professor of Medieval History at the University of Amsterdam. His main focus is on Western Europe in the 13th and 14th centuries. "Brilliant! A short, sharp, and often shocking corrective to conventional penal history and western cultural categories. Geltner's little book mobilizes an abundance of comparative evidence to challenge our

This volume is part of a long-standing collaborative project to map the sources which influenced the literary culture of Anglo-Saxon England, aiming to create a comprehensive list of all authors and works known in Britain between c. 500 and c. 1100 CE, and intended to update Ogilvy’s Books Known to the English. Readers will find information on manuscript evidence, medieval library catalogues, Anglo-Latin and Old English versions, citations, quotations and direct references to authors and works. The volume for 2015 comprises four fascicles in one, dedicated to the Venerable Bede (d. 735), pre-eminent theologian and author of the Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum.

Isidore of Seville (d. 636 CE) is a crucial figure in the preservation and propagation of Classical and Patristic learning. Representing a cross-section of the approaches to Isidore’s writings, the authors explore Isidore’s sources, how he selected and arranged them for future use, and the different ways in which his legacy was appropriated across the early medieval West.

The Cult of Saints in Late Antique Britain
Drawing on both textual and archaeological evidence, this study examines the cult of the saints in late antique Britain, asking when and why this novel development was introduced and the subsequent impact of the Anglo-Saxon conversion to Christianity on native British cults. Presenting new information on the history of Christianity in Britain, Garcia integrates Britain into the Late Antiquity paradigm, bringing archaeological and historical evidence into dialogue with one another.

As one of the symbols of German suffering during World War II, the Allied bombing of civilian targets left a strong imprint on German society. To a much wider extent than is often claimed, the bombings became part of German debates. In both the GDR and the Federal Republic before and after 1990, the Allied bombings became a topic of public and political interest as well as the subject of many historical accounts, its moral and historical interpretation always fundamentally contested. Bas von Benda-Beckmann analyzes their German historiography since 1945. He explores how German accounts reflected debates on postwar German identity, and whether the history of the air war formed a “counter-narrative” against the idea that the Germans as a collective were guilty of the Nazi crimes.

The Fate of the Amstelveen and Thirty Castaways on the South Coast of Arabia
This fascinating account of an agonising trek through the Oman desert is based on the logbook kept by the Amstelveen’s only surviving officer which surfaced in 1997 in a French antique market. Thirty seamen survived the 1763 shipwreck of a Dutch East Indiaman, the Amstelveen, off the south coast of Oman. They walked hundreds of miles in the desert sun in the hope of reaching civilisation. Some of the men did not make it, while the fate of others remains uncertain. Twenty-one castaways finally reached Muscat. Beautifully illustrated, this book offers rare insights into human nature under extreme circumstances.
Shipwreck & Survival in Oman, 1763
Cornelis Eyks, third mate on the Amstelveen, and over twenty other castaways, finally reached Muscat. Never before had anyone undertaken such a journey. Eyks started his report on the shipwreck and the journey to Muscat a few weeks after his arrival. It is the oldest surviving European account of the desert coast of Oman and the people who lived there. Eyks’ logbook was recently found in France. It has been used gratefully in the retelling of this incredible VOC story.

Thirty seamen survived the shipwreck of a Dutch East Indiaman on the south coast of Oman. They walked hundreds of kilometers in the burning sun, barefoot and almost naked, in the hope of reaching civilisation. Their journey through the desolate wilderness was agonising. Some of the men did not make it, while the fate of others remained uncertain.

Building a Republic for the Moderns This engaging work exploring the influence of Jansenism on Alexis de Tocqueville’s life and works is the most comprehensive treatment of the subject to date. Moving from the historical sociology of Jansenism in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century France to contemporary debates over the right to education, the role of religion in democracy and the nature of political freedom, Selby makes Tocqueville fully relevant to the present.

Emotions depend on language, cultural practices, expectation and moral beliefs. Hate, fear, cruelty and love are always turning history into the history of passion and lust, because emotional life is always ready to overflow intellectual life. This fascinating study of emotion in Renaissance Italy shows that emotions are built and created by the society in which they are expressed and conditioned. German Art in New York The Canonization of Modern Art between 1904 and 1957 Why did the Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim in New York, as well as major collectors and curators collect German art in the first half of the twentieth century? And why did certain works and movements belong to the canon while others did not? Langfeld examines how modern German art was received, collected and assessed, questioning the political and ideological motivations in the process. The political attitudes of artists close to National Socialism were systematically obscured or reinterpreted in order to justify their art. Conversely, art that could be associated with the official art of the ‘Third Reich’ was tabooed and considered ‘unworthy of the canon’. As a result, the reputation of many artists associated with Neue Sachlichkeit who had previously been highly esteemed began to wane.

A m s t e r d a m
This collection of essays by leading specialists offers a fresh perspective on the integration of marginal areas in the Roman empire. It is essential reading for anyone interested in the comparative analysis of the Roman countryside. It offers an original, multi-dimensional perspective on the social dynamics that led to the development of a large villa in the relatively poor and peripheral hinterland of the Lower Rhine limes. A central role is attributed to agency and the interplay of military and urban networks and native social structures.

Film criticism is in crisis. Bemoaning the current anarchy of internet amateurs and the lack of authoritative critics, many journalists and academics claim that in the digital age, cultural commentary has become dumbed down and fragmented into niche markets. Arguing against these claims, Frey examines the history of film critical discourse in France, Germany, the UK and the US to demonstrate that film criticism has, since its origins, always found itself in crisis.

Sergei M. Eisenstein Notes for a General History of Cinema One of the iconic figures of the twentiethcentury cinema, Eisenstein is best known as the director of The Battleship Potemkin. This comprehensive volume is the first English-language edition of his newly discovered notes for a “general history of the cinema”, a project he undertook during the last two years of his life, in 1946-48. While written in the Soviet Union of the second half of the 1940s, these notes deal with some of the most debated issues in contemporary film and media theory: the status of cinema as a medium, the intermedial relations between cinema, other media and other art forms, the nature and the objectives of film history. Eisenstein’s texts are accompanied by essays by international experts on film theory and the history of Russian cinema.

Playful Identities
The Ludification of Digital Media Cultures
The Ludification of Digital Media Cultures Digital media technologies increasingly shape how people relate to the world and to themselves. This thoughtful volume explores the notion of play as a lens to regard changing media practices and identity construction, arguing that play and games are not only appropriate metaphors to capture postmodern human identities, but also the very means by which people reflexively construct their identity.

Facing Forward Art and Theory from a Future Perspective This spirited exploration of the interfaces between art and theory in the 21st century brings together a multidisciplinary range of viewpoints on their future. The authors examine contemporary visual culture based on speculative predictions and creative scientific arguments. Focusing on seven themes – Future Tech, Future Image, Future Museum, Future City, Future Freedom, Future History, and Future Future – the book shows how
our sense of the future is shaped by a visual rhetoric of acceleration, progression, excess and destruction. Christoph Lindner is professor of media

Modernity is surrounded by an almost magic aura that casts a spell over people all over the world. To connect with modernity, various ways and means are used, among them magic practices and religious ideas. Dynamics of Religion in Southeast Asia: Magic and Modernity deals with the magic in and of modernity and asks about its current significance for the dynamics of religion in Southeast Asia. Drawing on recent ethnographic research in this area, the contributors to this wide-ranging volume demonstrate how religious concepts contribute to meeting the challenges of modernity. Against this background, religion and modernity are no longer perceived as in contradiction; rather, it is argued that a revision of the western notion of religion is required to understand the complexity of ‘multiple modernities’ in a globalised world. Volker Gottowik is Associate Professor at the University of Frankfurt/Main; currently he is working as a senior researcher in the area studies network ‘Dynamics of Religion in Southeast Asia’ (DORISEA) at the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology, University of Heidelberg. Spain, China and Japan in Manila, 1571-1644
This volume offers new perspectives on the connected histories of Spain, China and Japan as they emerged following the foundation of Manila as the capital of the Spanish Philippines in 1571. Cross-cultural encounters not only shaped Manila’s development as a ‘Eurasian’ port city, but also had profound political, economic and social ramifications for the three pre-modern states involved. Integrating Manila into world history helps to revise many long-cherished misconceptions while replacing them with a more balanced view.

Issue Mapping for an Ageing Europe is a seminal guide to mapping social and political issues with digital methods. The issue at stake is the coming crisis of an ageing Europe, where soon the old will outnumber the young, putting strains on the contemporary welfare state. The book explores how web data and online tools may be used to map the ageing agenda, including debates surrounding so-called ‘old age’, cultural philosophies of ageing, itinerant care workers, and European anti-ageing cuisine.

Robert Kennedy, speaking in 1966 shortly after Nelson Mandela had been imprisoned, said: ‘Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope.’ This book shows how this is done. The author recounts stories of mothers, students, teachers, journalists, attorneys, and others who courageously stood up for freedom and human rights against repressive rulers - and helped bring about change.
Robert Press, a former journalist based in Africa, is associate professor of political science at the University of Southern Mississippi.

The World Social Forum in Dakar (2011) Social movements have been central to history, politics, society and culture, and have had a global reach and impact. This important volume examines the impact of the Global Justice Movement as seen from the Southern hemisphere, exploring in the process a number of vital issues. The authors draw upon a collective survey from the World Social Forum in Dakar (2011), contributing to the literature on social movements, with special focus on the material dimensions of protest.

PROTEST AND SOCIAL MOVEMENTS JANUARY Hardback 156 x 234 mm 322 pages
This compelling study bridges the gap between structural and cultural theories by placing protestors and other players with whom they interact in the context of structured arenas. The main constraints on what protestors can accomplish are not determined directly by social and political structures so much as they are imposed by other players with different goals and interests. Although the strategic
complexity of politics and protest is enormous, this book makes a beginning through a careful catalogue of players and arenas. James M. Jasper teaches sociology at the CUNY Graduate Center. Jan Willem Duyvendak is distinguished research professor of sociology at the University of Amsterdam.

The Practice of Philology in the Nineteenth-Century Netherlands
This volume offers a new perspective on the evolution of philology within the humanities in Dutch scholarly culture of the nineteenth century. At that period, philology had far reaching implications on disciplines such as theology, chronology, astronomy, history, law and other disciplines. Philologists as protectors and teachers of the written heritage always played a pivotal role in the formation of the cultural repertoire of the educated public. As men of learning and high esteem, philologists also exerted influence outside the cultural sphere, especially in politics and religion. But by the end of the century this had changed radically.

This new study provides a comprehensive account of the multilingualism of Constantijn Huygens (1596-1687). Huygens used Dutch, French, Latin, Greek, Italian, English, Spanish and German in the majority of his correspondence and poetry.
