Site of Deportation, Site of Memory The Amsterdam Hollandsche Schouwburg and the Holocaust The Hollandsche Schouwburg is a former theatre in Amsterdam where, during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands, tens of thousands of Jews were assembled before being deported to transit and concentration camps. Before the war, the theatre had been an example of Jewish integration in the Netherlands, and after the war it became a memorial for the Jewish victims of Nazi persecution. This book is the first international publication to address all the
historical aspects of the site, putting it in a broader European and historical context. Frank van Vree is director of the NIOD Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies and professor at the University of Amsterdam. The Holocaust, Israel and 'the Jew' Histories of Antisemitism in Postwar Dutch Society We tend to think of the Dutch as a tolerant people, open to cultural and religious diversity. Yet in 1934 the Dutch government was forced to pass laws explicitly designed to protect Jews against attacks, just one manifestation of the antisemitism that emerged before and during World War II. Both the Shoah and Israel have become crucial points of attachment for postwar antisemitism in the Netherlands. This collection brings together a group of historians to show how that historical prejudice continued to resonate through the postwar years, from anti-Jewish chants
among native Dutch at football matches to a variety of anti-Semitic manifestations among Dutch Moroccans and Turks, that reveal the transference of traditional and new anti-Jewish stereotypes amongst migrant communities. This book presents a remarkable collection of letters from Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands (1880 – 1962) and her governess, Elizabeth Saxton Winter (1855 – 1936), an Englishwoman. The earliest letters are those of a child, sent to Miss Winter when she was on holiday in England, but after Wilhelmina’s education was finished in 1896 and she had no more need of a governess, she continued to write to Winter weekly. Her long letters cover a wide range of subjects: including her perspective on people and events, encounters with famous individuals, kings and emperors, but also sad times and loneliness, her belief in the Almighty, and above all, her development to her role as queen – her inauguration was in 1898 – and the high seriousness with which she regarded her duties. The resulting volume offers unprecedented insight into her life as child of her mother queen-regent Emma, as queen, as wife of prince Hendrik and as mother of princess Juliana. Emerentia van Heuven-van Nes worked at Het Loo Palace National Museum, Apeldoorn, for more than thirty years, where she was curator of prints, drawings, and photographs, and head of the educational department.

Viewing Disability in Medieval Spanish Texts Disgraced or Graced This book is one of the first to examine medieval Spanish canonical works for their portrayals of disability in relationship to theological teachings, legal precepts, and medical knowledge. Connie L. Scarborough shows that physical impairments were seen differently through each lens. Theology at times taught that the disabled were "marked by God," their sins rendered on their bodies; at other times, they were viewed as important objects of Christian charity. The disabled often suffered legal restrictions, allowing them to be
viewed with other distinctive groups, such as the ill or the poor. And from a medical point of view, a miraculous cure could be seen as evidence of divine intervention. This book explores all these perspectives through medieval Spain’s miracle narratives, hagiographies, didactic tales, and epic poetry. Connie L. Scarborough is a professor in the Department of Classical and Modern Languages and Literatures at Texas Tech University.

The Impact of Latin Culture on Medieval and Early Modern Scottish Writing Why did Eastern Church writers show no interest in analytical reasoning, while Western Church writers routinely incorporated analytical reasoning into their defences of the faith? We must look to the third century when the Roman Empire was splitting into eastern and western halves, and Christian thinkers were synthesizing Greek philosophy with Christian teachings. The amalgamation of Neoplatonism with Christian theology occurred in slightly different ways in those areas later dominated by the Western Church and the Eastern Church, respectively.

Emotion and the Seduction of the Senses, Baroque to Neo-Baroque This book examines the relationship between the cultural productions of the baroque in the seventeenth century and the neo-baroque in our contemporary world. The volume illuminates how, rather than providing rationally ordered visual realms, both the baroque and the neo-baroque construct complex performative spaces whose spectacle seeks to embrace, immerse, and seduce the senses and solicit the emotions of the beholder. Lisa Beaven is a post-doctoral research fellow in the Australian Research Council Centre for Excellence in the History of Emotions at the University of Melbourne. Angela Ndalianis is professor of Screen Studies at the University of Melbourne.
