UITMARKT, AUGUST 29, 30, 31 THE BIGGEST CULTURAL FESTIVAL OF THE YEAR THE COMPLETE PROGRAMME
UITMARKT 2008 GENERAL INFORMATION www.uitmarkt.nl THE DATES: Friday 29, Saturday 30, Sunday 31 August. THE TIMES: The opening celebrations take place on Friday from 8pm to midnight. On Saturday, the programme runs from 11am to midnight, and on Sunday from 11am to 10pm. THE LOCATIONS: Uitmarkt takes place all around the OOSTELIJK HAVENGEBIED (the Eastern Docklands), as well as at two locations in Amsterdam-Noord. While the main festival is free, there is also a special theatre sampler programme in the theatres of Leidseplein: Melkweg Theater, Podium Leidseplein, Stadsschouwburg and Theater Bellevue. Tickets for these performances are €2.50 per show, available from a special Leidseplein ticket point. HOW TO GET THERE, AND HOW TO GET AROUND: From Central Station, take TRAM 26 heading towards IJburg. This passes the docklands, travelling through the Uitmarkt terrain. You can also take TRAM 10 to Azartplein, which is the most convenient way to get to Java-eiland. From Java-eiland, it is possible to take the ferry to the two stages in Amsterdam-Noord. If travelling to Leidseplein, TRAMS 1, 2, 5 OR 10 pass closest to the Leidseplein theatres. During Uitmarkt, public transport company GVB is offering special tickets for festival visitors. For €2.50, you can purchase an all-day tram pass for TRAM 26 (ticket point outside Central Station, plus GVB stewards along the tram route).
THE CENTRE OF IT ALL: On Piet Heinkade you will find the CULTUURBOULEVARD. The information market here features stalls from 185 cultural institutions, theatres, production companies and museums, presenting themselves and their plans for the coming season. Also on Piet Heinkade is the Uitmarkt book market, featuring more than 80 book stalls. The CULTUURBOULEVARD is open from noon to 6pm on Saturday; 1pm to 6pm on Sunday.
THE PROGRAMME: More than 450 performances on 30 different stages await you, all for free! From theatre to music, to dance, literature, cabaret, special programmes for kids, art exhibitions, lectures and more. Although most theatre performances and lectures are in Dutch, there is still more than enough to do and see for nonDutch speakers—the music, dance and art programme alone guarantees that!
Alongside the many, many performances and sights that Uitmarkt has to offer, there are also a number of special programmes:
MUSEUM CONTAINER CASTLE: At the top of Java-eiland, you can gaze upon a giant castle made from shipping containers. This is the BankGiro Loterij Museumkwartier. Here, every museum in Amsterdam has its own container to present itself and its plans for the coming season.
KUNSTXPO: There’ll also be a giant art exhibition in and around specially selected Uitmarkt locations, where Amsterdam-based artists will present their works.
INTERNATIONAL INFO: A special feature of the informa-
ARCHITECTURE PROGRAMME: In the Passenger Terminal Amsterdam
tion market is an International Information Tent, hosting stalls by Uitmarkt collaborators such as ATCB (Amsterdam Tourism and Congress Bureau), AUB (Amsterdams Uitburo) and Cultureplayer. It's a hub for all English information, and it's also where you can find AMSTERDAM WEEKLY representatives and pick up a copy of the newspaper.
there’ll be a special architecture programme. In this series of lectures, well-known architects talk about the creation of their buildings.
TOONZETTERS: This mini-festival takes place in Muziekgebouw on Sunday 31 August and is all about contemporary music. It presents the ten best compositions from the 2007/2008 season. THE REMIX: A special programme for the youth, offering music, theatre, dance and spoken word.
