A PETITE URBAN LANDSCAPE FALL 2012 | ARCH 251 | CHARLES MACBRIDE
The site for this urban park is found in the small town of Mobridge, South Dakota. Not only was this town the very first of our department’s ‘small-town urbanism study,’ it was our first experience as an architecture class of researching a main street and discovering the unique characteristics of this forgotten, railway settlement. The intersection of main street and Highway 12 creates an axis through the SW part of town, anchored by Legion Memorial Park to the north and our site along the river in the south. The concept of this design elongates the existing axis, introducing an angle in order to connect the landmark of a design firm with an ideal view of the river. Through the study of a grid system(1), floating platforms(2), and an elevated greenway(3), this angle becomes an overlapping grid system of programs to create a dense, urban extension of main street. A small-scale urban landscape is formed, incorporating a public square, community gardens, outdoor recreational space, a museum, farmer’s market and cafe.

URBAN INFILL + ARCADE SPRiNG 2013 | ARCH 252 | CHARLES MACBRIDE 04
An arcade is a series of arches supported by columns or walls, usually acting as a passageway from one space to the next. The introduction of an arcade within this slender, infill site of Savannah, GA becomes the program for this ‘vertical’ project. Through the study of Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert in Brussels, the design incorporates a few different programs within this space. This arcade acts as a passageway with a purpose, similar to the arcade in Brussels. The section with a material collage highlights the arcade spaces by revealing the existing brick walls along the 3-story height corridor. The representation of this section tributes to the introduction of an art gallery within this infill building. Along the first level, the open air arcade acts mostly as a walkway, however offers a small area for seating and an entrance to the cafe. The second level includes a conference room, the curator’s office and an outdoor ‘catwalk’ connecting the office spaces with the second level of the cafe. This exterior catwalk is replicated on the third level, connecting the art gallery and workspaces for the artists. As one proceeds from the front to the back end of the site, the spaces transition from public to private with the open courtyard as a midpoint area. The vertical organization of spaces is a similar progression, with the first level remaining the most public and the third level distinctly for the artists and guests of the gallery.

THE NEIGHBORHOOD OF VRSOVICE FALL 2013 | ARCH 351 | ADAM GEBRIAN 06
The site for this project in Prague is known to the community as ‘proluka,’ meaning “the vacant site.” This triangluar buildable area falls within the community of Vrsovice, district 10 of Prague and holds many unique qualities compared to other open sites in the city. Quality housing units, easy access to public transportation, and attractive green spaces all benefit this area of Vrsovice. However, the issue of air quality and limited parking effect this community as well. How do you design a space for the community on a site that is used primarily for it’s open area? Through the arrangement of distinct pathways, conservation of the community’s wants, utilization of green space, and introduction of program, Proluka becomes a housing complex aimed for families of Vrsovice. The Neighborhood incorporates housing, as well as the mix of interior and exterior community spaces to accommodate both the Proluka advocates as well as the larger district of Prague 10. The melding of form A and form D create the semi-enclosed space of the Neighborhood with a range of flats and multi-story apartments. The circulation path is placed along the rim of the open interior courtyard, creating an overlap of use and function for the ideal gathering space in the project. IN COLLABORATION WITH BRAXTON HINKLE

A - this form acts as a snake, connecting the open, southern corner to the more covered, private area of the site B - a mass anchored toward the SE part of the site is formed, along with a similar mass latching onto the existing building to create a horizontal pathway C - a typical continuation of the existing building is created toward the northern point of the site, acting as an ‘open’ variation of the popular interior courtyard in this city D - this formation is a derivative of form C, with more of an irregular shape and less definition for the central pathway

BLURRED BOUNDARIES SPRING 2014 | ARCH 352 | JESSICA GARCIA-FRITZ 08
The first portion of this project was set in Aberdeen, SD, with the program of an addition to the exisitng Dakotah Prairie Art Museum. These designs were made through iterative massing models at a smaller scale in order to produce quick, schematic design ideas. Of the 27 models produced, six are displayed to show the main ideas of ramps, excavation, and the subtle line between interior and exterior space. The second portion of this project called for the design of a cinema in Pioneer Park of Brookings, SD. This cinema aims to create a space not just to view movies, but to enjoy the art of film and writing. This public building has conference rooms, study rooms, two cafes, and both an interior and exterior cinema. A concept of blurred boundaries is born from the first portion of the project. The line is blurred between these interior, exterior, enclosed and semi-enclosed spaces through the transition of program throughout the park. The geometric pixel pattern celebrates the footprint of the historical cabin on site and replicates itself to create the building’s form. The role of these pixels as they dissolve into smaller masses along the northwest corner of the site interpret an idea of the cinematic program evolving into the refined spaces for conference rooms and library stacks. The representation of these blurred boundaries is defined through the nesting of two structural frames, specifically shown by the interior cinema model. The smaller structure frames the viewing room specifically, while the larger web joist framing system encloses the adjacent hallway as well. Dakotah Prairie Museum models

VINTON STREET STUDIOS FALL 2014 | ARCH 451 | SARA LUM 10
The design of a hotel during this semester is divided into two major sections; the Hobo Habitat and the proposal of a boutique hotel in Omaha, NE. The Hobo Habitat project is left relatively open, with the only restraint being that the structure must fit on a 6’ x 10’ trailer bed. The design of this habitat is essentially a self assembled vertical dwelling used primarily for camping in natural settings. A system of timber members are placed together to frame spaces, forming the most private space at the highest point. The intention of this design includes other shading materials not shown within the model. The verticality and material of this structure influences the boutique hotel room design later in the semester. The unique setting of our site along Vinton Street in Omaha plays a large role with the design of the Vinton Street Studios. This community is apart of an up and coming art district, introducing many opportunities for artists to relocate to this type of mixed use living. Nine of the ten rooms offered are three levels, each including a private studio workspace. These studios are on display to the public who wish to engage in the courtyard space. Two art galleries are also introduced into the site, one along the edge of Vinton Street and the other acting as a slender divide between the public courtyard and a private outdoor lecture space for visiting artists. The vertical movement of the individual spaces contrast the overarching gesture of flowing inclines throughout the topography of the site. Entrance onto the site is partially open, offering an inviting welcome to community members, yet creating a covered threshold to respect the artists who are temporarily staying at this facility.
