AV THAT’S ANYTHING BUT CONVENTIONAL, AT THE ICC

Incorporating a range of versatile spaces, the ICC has been designed to accommodate many different functions

Standing next to the iconic Spodek (Saucer) in Katowice, Poland, the International Conference Centre (ICC) is a focal point of the city’s newly established Cultural Zone, also home to the New Silesian Museum and the headquarters of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra. An architecturally-striking black rectangular building which is divided in two by a distinctive green grass valley, the ICC provides a space for recreation, leisure and socialising, and completes Katowice’s transformation from an industrial city, to one of culture, business and education.

videowall systems in Europe; consisting of three banks of 55” NEC LCD monitors, in 9x9 configurations, either side of the main hall. With so many rooms to be used either alone or combination with others, and a host of audio and video signals needing to be switched around the whole complex in all directions, a robust control and distribution solution was a fundamental requirement. Harnessing the power of Enova DGX technology, leading systems integrator Shadok AV has delivered an AMX-centric solution which is providing this state-of-the-art facility with all the flexibility that it wants, combined with the technical rigidity that it needs.

Incorporating a range of versatile spaces, the ICC has been designed to accommodate many functions; from conferences and conventions, to exhibitions and performances, and everything in between. The large, multifunctional hall has the capacity to seat 9,000 people and, in addition, there is a range of smaller meeting rooms, a banqueting hall, lecture theatre, conference centre and a restaurant. The large foyer provides additional exhibition space and the ICC is connected to the Saucer by means of a corridor, allowing for the organisation of large-scale events in both places, simultaneously. Traditionally, a digital media switcher would have been used to send content from numerous sources to displays and projectors throughout a building such as the ICC. But a digital media switcher would have had significant shortcomings in the management of multiple video output resolutions, content copyright protection and maintaining support for the legacy, analogue-only devices. And, in this multi-screen, multiresolution installation, video content would have to be forced down to a common resolution among all output devices; resulting in inferior video quality on the ICC’s expensive, high definition displays. The ICC completes Katowice’s transformation from a city of industry to one of culture

The ICC boasts no fewer than seven Enova DGX 32 units; the multifunctional hall alone has three, as well as two panoramic Modero X Series panels and three Modero 9000i touchscreens. An NI-3100 provides additional processing capability in this versatile facility, which can be divided into three smaller rooms, as required. The impressive 1,000 people Banqueting Hall is similarly flexible and technically well-appointed. The hall, which can also be divided into three separate rooms, has three Modero 9000i touch panels for independent control in each, plus a dedicated control room housing the Enova DGX32, a NI-3100 and both a 7” Modero S Series and a 19” Modero X Series touch panel. The panoramic proportions of the Modero X Series offer an expansive surface on which technicians can take control of the whole facility, together with the ability to preview content from multiple sources and stream live HD video. The Lecture Theatre, with its electronic amplification, backstage projection room and translator’s booth, is ideal for theatrical functions. Two 19” Modero X Series touch panels afford both front-of-house and backstage control and an Enova DGX16 and a NI-3100 provide seamless switching and additional control capability, respectively. The 18 room Conference Centre boasts three DGX 32s and no fewer than 20 Modero 5200i touch panels and a 10” Modero S Series, for fingertip control capability, both locally and centrally.

Innovative Enova technology delivers seamless distribution and centralised management

This state-of-the-art facility now boasts both system flexibility and technical rigidity

Thanks to its high-tech specification and AMX-enabled automation, the ICC has become one of the most popular venues in Poland and recently hosted the final of the Intel Extreme Masters World Championship; the flagship competition for the world’s largest esports company and an audio-visual spectacular of such proportions that it would strike fear into the heart of lesser control systems. The AMX system more than passed the test, so much so that the organisers have rebooked and hope to make next year’s event the largest in ESL history. A U T O M AT E
