SEEING BEYOND THE VISIBLE IN WALKING EXPERIENCE Often in our everyday life, we intuitively foresee situations coming. Our senses are not only capable of capturing the present moments but also helping to derive an anticipation, perceiving ahead of time. Emma Cocker’s writing, Seeing Beyond the Visible, emphasizes on this intuitive ability to sense the future by keen perception and insight. The skill is not new to us yet to be refined. Prior to an anticipation, the senses perceive the surroundings. A simple anticipation is derived from one or few observations. To build on the idea, a complex anticipation, or a whole imaginary future, can thus be composed from a collected number of observations. Ingold’s writing Culture on the Ground suggests that many factors that led to the society and culture today may have hindered the most direct and true way which people experience and perceive the environment. Despite all gifted human capabilities, people rely dominantly on only few. Our hands take on all tasks; on the other hand, our feet are restricted to walking. They receive order from the brain what we consider a tedious work. Much is forgotten that they, in fact, have sensitive nerves and can be a tool to get in touch with our environment. The dried-leaf “ground is seen or heard rather than felt by the closest body part.

PARIS
SEEING BEYOND THE VISIBLE IN WALKING EXPERIENCE My second algorithm took place at BoulogneBillancourt, a district West of central Paris. I was much amazed by the culture and life in Paris. Something that I came to realize was that there were many more people exercising on the street; joggers and bikers occupied one side of the pedestrian walks, and some practiced yoga or weight training at an open lawn. This observation challenges my thinking of how the culture shapes the way people organize, arrange, or use the public spaces and amenities. Seemingly, the French made comfortable street widths for the distance and privacy amongst them, but the streets then are possible for multiple activity types. Overall, I enjoyed my short discoveries in the French people’s lifestyle and attitudes towards a public space. The urban landscape in Paris are more playful, inviting creative use of space. The streets are much wider than those in Castiglion Fiorentino, Italy. Spaces are used and occupied freely and creatively. We can see the streetscape also giving the spaciousness and freedom in the double pedestrian lanes and a bike lane in between.

MUNICH
SEEING BEYOND THE VISIBLE IN WALKING EXPERIENCE The third city which I visited was Munich, Germany. It was a systematic city where things were neat, efficient, and convenient. I began my walking algorithm near a residential area just a little outside the city center. During the walk, I noticed street signs and private signs. They revealed about the logic of the Germans. There were also numerous bikes, bike stops, and bikers along the streets. The bike lane and pedestrian walk are defined. In a systematic and organized city, a challenge of my walk was seeing many repetitions, such as bikes and bikers, at every section of street, that creates similar anticipations. Yet, it was an interesting observation. Although, the architecture forms and street patterns are in strict, similar organization. Plantings were used in an informal way, softening residential places. WALKING ALGORITHM Inizia a camminare, crea la mappa mentre cammini Make a mark for every 10 steps Write and describe your observations Derive the simple anticipations As you collect enough insights, create a sketch of a complex anticipation Repeat

The urban landscape in Munich is strict and efficient. Their culture allows an efficientf lifestyle and neatlooking environment. In many places visited, I found strict grid to its organization. The Vitualmarket has fixed tables aligned in grid. Areas are well-defined. The strict mind can be seen on their streetscape where everywhere in Germany, the organization of padestrian, bike, and car lanes are always in the same order. Signages are well placed and clear in every rule.
