Kandinsky Study Second Year B.E.D.
Fall 2006
In this short project, the objective was to take a favorite painting and interpret it into our own 2D design and create a 3D box. My analysis of the Kandinsky painting included: overlapping geometry, curves to create patterns, contrast of colors and textures, and multiple layers that create depth and shadow. I chose different types of wood and other materials to create a variety of layers, textures, forms and shadows.

Light Tower Second Year B.E.D.
Fall 2006

Client: Cirque Du Soleil Contortionist The objective of this project was to create a tower for a chosen client emphasizing form and the lighting of the tower. I chose a Cirque Du Soleil Contortionist as my client and studied the performers of Cirque Du Soleil. I used the movement of the performer’s limbs as inspiration for the outer forms. For the inner tower form I used the balance and core of the contortionist and de-emphasized its visual impact on the overall tower. The light placement on the curved forms and the curved forms themselves create the strong and controlled movement the contortionist has. Light Tower • Second Year B.E.D • Academic Work

Contemporary Art Museum San Francisco Two week project of our personal choice. I designed a Contemporary Arts Museum in San Francisco, California. Goals: create a more public friendly space with the incorporation of a street cafe, different levels of seating and a plaza area between the building and the street.

Housing for Aging • First Year M.Arch • Academic Work
This urban residence for the elderly fuses nature from the adjacent park with the urban context of the city to create a center with a variety of activities that connect the residents to the community.
A variety of spaces for social interaction are incorporated into the building and site. Entry gardens for residents to watch everyday activities entering the building. Large terraces on each floor facing the park to view the urban life around them. Semi-private terraces for a more private escape without having to stay in their bedroom.
Satellite for Lady Bird Johnson Center gives the residents the opportunity to learn about local flora and interact with the public coming to the center. Integration of Horticulture Therapy encourages the residents to participate in these activities. Local Artist Gallery can bring the public into the building for residents to socialize with.

Program elements including a preschool, horticulture and pet therapy centers and a satellite of the Lady Bird Johnson Wildlife Center encourage this interaction. Garden terraces located on every resident level allow for access to nature and an opportunity for the residents to participate actively in the care of the environment they live in.

Community The program concept for this project is to combine ambulatory and wellness services in a single facility, and create a strong connection to the community. Based on the desired size of the facility, there could be several different components to ambulatory care or wellness added to the facility ranging from a robust diagnostics department to a full sized recreation and ďŹ tness area. The general concept is to maintain a balance of hard and soft costs within the facility, while generating a positive reputation in the community.

View from mid-rise residential buildings. Shows main entry, service entry, and art installation on existing building done in collaboration with Portland Art Museum.
Conceptual rendering showing the characteristics of the lobby and public spaces. These spaces are design to be semi-open to one another to encourage exploration and have visual and physical transparency. The aesthetics incorporate color and bold graphic design for wayďŹ ndng purposes and to create an energetic environment.

View from the park block showing site design that extends the original South Park Block landscape. Façade designed to highlight building activities from pedestrian perspective.
Conceptual rendering showing the characteristics of the yoga and other meditative spaces. In this room, the morning sun will light the space, and the large windows frame views of the city skyline and park block. The cooler colors and use of wood on the floor and ceiling create a calm and meditative atmosphere.

Worked on several residential and rennovation projects. I completed all the drawings needed for each project under the supervision of Bill Anderson including floor plans, elevations, site work, interior elevations, details, wall sections, mechanical and electrical plans. I also coordinated with structural engineers and worked closely with Bill Anderson on the design and details of multiple projects.

Re-Assemble Table Furniture Design Project in Collaboration with Alejandro Iriarte
This is a dining table (36” by 60”) created to have a simple appearance and practicality. It is designed to follow simple structure lines and to express the virtues and qualities of the birch plywood material. This a piece of furniture is designed to be easily moved. It disassembles quickly into 5 pieces and requires four bolts for added stability. There are absolutely no knots, glues or easily lost pieces in this design. Simple half lap and shear joinery combined with precision cutting allow for a lightweight, compact yet sturdy table for everyday use. The prototype was built using 9-ply Chinese birch plywood. Its contrasting layers are left exposed on all edges to accentuate the design and the surfaces are white enameled with protective water-based polycrylic coating. This project was an equal collaboration with Alejandro Iriarte and I took part in the design of the table, model building, use of the CNC router, and all hand work, painting and finishing of the table. Un-Comfortable Chair Furniture Design Project in Collaboration with Alejandro Iriarte
The inspiration for this chair stemmed from a discussion on furniture and whether you can classify a piece as “uncomfortable” or “comfortable” based only on appearance. The play on words, appearance and material choice evolved into this prototype. This chair is made from birch plywood pieces cut on a CNC router. It can be assembled and disassemble with no glue, bolts, knots or screws. The design of the pieces also allows the chair to be packed flat so that it is easy to move. Each piece fits snug in place and key pieces are locked in place by the joint type so that the chair can be picked up and moved easily without falling apart. Personal Work • Un-Comfortable Chair

Photography Selected Photographs from 2005 to 2013
My inspiration for photography comes from differences in materials and textures, contrasting elements, geometric forms, unique angles or perspectives, shadows, and sillouettes of subjects. Most of my photography is from my travels around various cities in the United States and Europe.
