LIBRARIES TRANSFORM Johnson County Public Library’s staff is passionate about providing new services and programming that inspires lifelong learning throughout our community. As we head into the colder months, we want to share highlights from this year, remind you about indoor activities and let you know about our most recent Make A Difference projects.
Johnson County Public Library
Since 1911, the Johnson County Public Library has worked toward improving the quality of life for all citizens of Johnson County, Indiana. The Johnson County Public Library is strengthening our community by connecting people, resources and experiences. The library’s new mission provides the direction for our future and communicates our purpose. From book clubs and family fun days, to author visits and storytimes, your library has a full schedule of engaging programs year-round.
1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Finishers We love celebrating milestones with your family. This year more than 36 littles celebrated their goal of reading 1,000 books before kindergarten! Is your preschooler registered? Visit pageafterpage.org/1000books to learn more about this program. Know Your Community Imagine how hard it must be for a neighbor or a co-worker who is new to the U.S. to get settled in a community with a different language and culture. Our Adult Learning Center is hosting bi-monthly Know Your Community sessions to help ESL learners get familiar with resources and services in our community. We kicked off the series in August with a JCPL 101 course sharing resources that can help our new neighbors with language tutoring and more. See page 15 for details. Starling Kits Speaking to your baby is easy. The hard part is knowing if you're saying enough to help your baby develop early language and literacy skills. Meet the Starling - the world's first wearable word counter that gives adults real-time insights into the child’s day. Pair the Starling with the free smart phone app, clip it to your baby's clothing and start talking! Virtual Reality Headsets Travel the world, venture into outer space or explore the depths of the ocean with JCPL’s new Oculus GO virtual reality headsets. Our librarians are planning events and dreaming up ways to incorporate virtual reality into programming. Book clubs can “visit” the settings of their books. Or you can “play” the drums without bothering anyone. Check out our program listings for your chance to try out the headsets. Learn about these projects and more at pageafterpage.org

The Friends of the Library and the Johnson County Public Library Foundation work together as a nonprofit organization to raise funds to support programs that encourage lifelong learning through the JCPL. In 2017, 53% of funding of all programs and events were supported by the Friends and JCPL Foundation. The Friends of JCPL raise funds through their quarterly book sales. The Friends also stock the many Little Free Libraries that are associated with JCPL StoryWalks throughout the county. The JCPL Foundation seeks donations from corporations, the local business community and other foundations and receives funding from individual donations, planned gifts and legacy bequests. From celebrating the opening of our fifth StoryWalk (at Windisch Park) and discovering coding camps for teens to learning about pioneer life on the prairie and meeting several best-selling authors, we had a fantastic time exploring summer with you! We're so pleased that we surpassed our goal of 35,000 hours, reading more than 55,000 hours – that’s over 3 million minutes – read together as a community this summer! Explore Summer offered some fun prizes and rewards including the Library Prize which you voted to have us add to our growing collection of items you can borrow. Be watching your email for a survey to help us select which items to add to our Library of Things. Congratulations on a successful summer filled with learning! This fall, the libraries of Johnson County partnered with over 50 businesses to bring you discounts, deals and freebies during Play Your Card Right. We hope you were able to take advantage of these deals and support the businesses in our community. Also in September, we kicked off our At Home in Johnson County events with Cultural Spotlights on Japan, China, India and Mexico as well as the free Film Series at The Historic Artcraft Theatre in October. We also particpated in the One State / One Story Frankenstein program celebrating the 200th anniversary of Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein.”

What is a Library? A library is a place to connect people, resources and experiences. It’s a place where ALL people are welcome. It’s a place to learn through reading, discovering and creating. A library is a community of empowered learners, enthusiastic readers and engaged citizens.
As we look ahead to the holidays, we're looking forward to our next DNA reveal event in November when we uncover the family stories of two well-known Johnson County leaders, the Queen of Free, Cherie Lowe and Maj. Gen (retired) R. Martin Umbarger (president of Umbarger Agribusiness and former Adjutant General of Indiana.) The holiday season will include visits from Santa Claus as well as from our reindeer friends from Silly Safaris. And, don’t forget to mark your calendar for our 14th Annual Cookie Contest at Downtown Franklin’s Holiday Lighting festival.

Meet Tom Randall, Circulation Manager / Baker JCPL: Your baking skills have become well known among your co-workers here at the library. How did you get started baking? TR: I work at the library to earn my living, but I’m a baker at heart. My grandparents owned a little bakery in my hometown. My dad worked his way through college in the family bakery. My uncle became the head baker when my grandparents retired. I started working in the bakery when I was in junior high school (before child labor laws.) I would go to work at 5 o’clock in the morning and I would have to walk down the alley past the police department. A few times they would stop me and want to know what I was doing out at that hour. But once they realized who my family was, they knew where I was going. I worked in the family bakery off and on through junior high and high school, but I’ve always liked baking. It just came naturally.
Tom Randall is the Circulation Manager at our White River Branch. As the Circulation Manager, Tom oversees the process of checking materials out from the library. He has a wide knowledge of what’s in the library and how to find it through the software. But Tom doesn't spend all his time behind the front counter, he's quite the accomplished baker, too. Read our interview with Tom and learn how his work at the library and his passion for baking come together. Johnson County Public Library: What's your library background? How long have you worked for JCPL? Tom Randall: I’ve been the Circulation Manager since I was hired at the White River Branch, and it was frankly a little awkward at first because I didn’t come from a library background. I came from retail background, having worked for a Borders bookstore for almost eight years. I’m very customer service oriented, so I bring a lot of that skill to the library. I’ve been here for nine years now. JCPL: What’s your favorite thing about working at JCPL? TR: The relationships that I have with people, both staff and patrons, are the best part about working at JCPL. I have an outstanding circulation crew and shelving crew; I wouldn’t trade them for anybody. But beyond that is developing the relationships with the people who come into the library. Over the years, I’ve gotten to know our regulars. I consider some of them friends now that we’ve shared interests in authors. We talk about who we’ve read and they make book recommendations for me, too. I’ve got a good friend, an 85-year-old former marine, who's moved out of this area. He used to come into the library like a ray of sunshine every time, always had a kind word to say to everybody. When he visits, we have lunch together to catch up. Relationships like that are one of the best parts about working at the library. I feel like I’m making a difference for people.
10
JCPL: You put your baking skills to work at the library, from time to time. Could you tell us a little bit about the Bread of the Month Club that you do for JCPL staff? TR: As a part of our annual staff development day, we had a silent auction for employees to donate items for sale and the proceeds would benefit the staff benevolence fund. Each year, I would take the day off before staff day to bake bread from morning until the wee hours of the night so I could donate all the items for sale. But I just couldn't keep up with that. So I decided to offer a bread of a month kind of thing where I donated coupons and then staff could request items whenever they wanted them. JCPL: Over the summer you did a Sourdough Bread Baking class at our Trafalgar Branch, and it was quite a hit. Would you host another class at JCPL? TR: Yes. It's challenging to condense something that can take five or six hours (or even a couple of days) to process down to an hour program. It’s pretty tough to do but I'm happy to do it.
