This event represents a unique opportunity for our community partners across the state to come together and work collectively toward shifting conditions for children across Michigan, beginning with a deep application of the racial equity guiding concepts.

Now serving his third term, Mayor George Heartwell took office on Jan. 1, 2004. During his tenure, City government has implemented a variety of environmental measures, including the purchase of renewable resource energy, use of alternative fuels in city vehicles, continued attention to water quality in the Grand River and widespread implementation of energy conservation measures.

Grand Rapids is widely recognized as one of the most sustainable cities in America. In 2007, the United Nations recognized the city as a “Regional Center of Expertise in Education for Sustainable Development.” In 2010, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce gave Grand Rapids the “Nation’s Most Sustainable City” award, and in 2012 Mayor Heartwell was given the first place Climate Protection Award by the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

Dr. Manuel Pastor is professor of sociology and American studies and ethnicity at the University of Southern California. He also serves as director of USC’s Program for Environmental and Regional Equity (PERE) and co-director of USC’s Center for the Study of Immigrant Integration (CSII). He also is the founding director of the Center for Justice, Tolerance and Community at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
