A Traditional Kilner & Sanderson Christmas

Page 1

The best day ever.

The morning of the 25th December is probably the only morning of the year where I get up bright and early with a big smile on my face! When I was younger I’d sneak out of my room, drag my little brother out of bed and then

we would do whatever we could to wake our parents up! My Mum always knew we would get up ridiculously early so she left us little presents at the top of the stairs to open and keep us occupied while they took their

time getting ready for the long day ahead. When they eventually got up we would tip toe downstairs and then find mountains and mountains of presents! Me and my brother would have a sofa each full!

Christmas Songs

Every year ever since I was little my Dad decides to put the radio on way too loud on a Christmas morning mainly for all of the songs. This wouldn’t usually be a problem but I can’t stand Radio 2! A bit of hallam FM or Capital is just fine as I

love all of the modern stuff. This just shows every year we have certain parts of Christmas that keeps things traditional. Also at this time of the day we make sure we are ready in time to set off to my Grandmas house

for Christmas dinner. We never eat breakfast Christmas morning simply because the meal is that big that my Grandma cooks! But what is Christmas without too much food?

Too much food!

Christmas Dinner at my Grandmas is one of the best parts of the day. When I was younger my Grandma would set up a table for my and my the other cousins known as the “kids table” then we would also have one set up for the adults.

It was a shock to the system when I moved on to the adults table. I’m the oldest of all of my cousins on my Mums side. On my Dads side however I’m the 2nd youngest of about 70! Which is pretty crazy. After pulling Christmas crackers,

eating too much food and reading silly jokes to each other me and my cousins try help out as much as we can with the big clean up... That is, until, my Grandad steps in and takes over saying”if you want a job done right, do it yourself”.

Presents!

As we have all become older the present piles have become smaller and smaller mainly because they become more and more expensive! My Grandma has told me that when we were all young her and my mum used to patrol around Meadowhall finding

us more and more toys every Christmas, they even went to Toys R Us which is crazy as I’ve even worked there part time over the Summer advising parents on what presents to buy their own kids! Life goes way too fast!

Presents used to mainly be toys for the young ones and smellies for the older ones. I’m 20 now and usually I can expect to recieve a lot of smellies, nightwear and also some new fluffy slippers which my Grandma gets me every year.

Electric Shock!

When we were younger my Grandad used to plan fun games for me and my cousins. This would be games like musical chairs, pin the tail on the donkey, bingo, apple bobbing and more. They were so much fun and thanks to him I

have some of the best Christmas memories ever. Nowadays things are a little different. For example, last year we played a game where you had to press a button as quick as you could when you heard a beep...

whoever was last to press the button would get an electric shock. I think the 5 year old in me would of been way too scared to play that. the 20 year old me however found it absolutley hilarious.

Doctor Who?

When I was younger this part of the day would involve playing with my younger cousins with all of our new toys. It was also part of the day where I had to pick two things to play with for the rest of the night as all of my other presents were

being put in a big bag ready to take home! I can remember there being mountains of presents back in the day, they even looked like mountains to me as I wasn’t the tallest of kids! Now as my younger cousins

are all teenagers we tend to all sit together and watch TV... at this time on Christmas it seems to always be Doctor Who as they always do a special. It is that time of day where things start to die down a bit.

ZzzzZzzzZ

At this point of the day my Grandma decides to bring out even more food. She makes a buffet and we all stuff our faces for the second time of the day. After this we all carry on watching Christmas TV enjoying eachothers

company. It is pretty much the only day of the year where we can all get together as work usually gets in the way especially with my family that work nights. This is usually about the time where someone will start snoring

away. I can remember when I was younger, one year, we had a Kareoke session. My little brother sung a McFly song and he was only 5! Infact, I am pretty sure I have a video of it somewhere, it is the cutest thing in the world!

We are getting old... This is usually the most emotional part of the day as we realise the day is over and we have 365 more days to wait until the next Christmas. We all tend to get a little bit reflective on what we have done over the last year and what has happened.

We also remember the loved ones we have lost such as my Mum. She was one of my Grandmas 3 daughters and she was also the oldest. She was a huge influence on making our Christmas such a great day and because of that she

has made me want to make sure Christmas is brilliant every year for everyone I love. That doesn’t mean just buying them a nice present, it is to just somehow show we care. The thought really does count the most.
